Percy stepped up the microphone with a stoic look, his glasses just in place. Waiting a moment for the gathered press members to settle down from their conversations, he began. "Thank you for joining us today. This morning, it is my pleasure to announce - as highlighted at the ten year anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts - this morning is the opening of the elections for Minister for Magic." The crowd jostled a bit, and he gave them a moment to settle down again, adjusting his glasses so as not to make the moment an awkward silence. Percy was completely at ease in front of cameras and a crowd - despite his awkward childhood and adolescence, he'd taken pride in his job and made sure that he'd learned what it meant to be an upstanding member of the Ministry in the public eye.
Today, he wore a simple fitted navy suit, crisp white shirt, and the tie that Penelope had sent him that morning - neutral colors, to kick off what would surely be a drama-free campaign season. "The Wizaengamot will hold official offices hours beginning at 9 o'clock this morning, from 9am to 6pm every day from now until August 20th. During this time, interested parties may present themselves to the Wizengamot and make their case for nomination. After being seconded within the body, the party will be added to the list of the Candidates and may begin campaigning. At 6:30pm on the 20th, the Ministry will announce the official candidate list for the office of Minister for Magic." Percy took a sip of water.
"After three months of what will surely be a robust discussion of the issues facing our communities now and in the coming seven years, the entire adult Wizarding community of the UK and the Commonwealth will vote on October the first." The dry, detail oriented portion of his announcement now finished, he set his notes aside and looked into the crowd, his hands coming to rest on the edges of the podium.
"We here at the Ministry would like to impress upon our population the importance of the coming weeks. Our Minister for Magic is not only the banner carrier for our kind, but also responsible for policies of education, poverty, employment, and finance. The Minister - whoever she or he may be coming October 2nd - chooses the Ministry staff who you work with everyday, the witches and wizards who make the daily work of our nation possible. The Minister and their staff also represent us to the Muggle world, working closely with the UK Prime Minister and the Royal Family. I ask our voters to think carefully, listen to all of the candidates, tune in to the debates the Ministry will host, focus on the media attention, open up the discussion among your families, with your children and your friends." he took another sip of water and his stance relaxed just a bit.
"Free elections are a beautiful thing. We are lucky - and yes, I use the term luck, because as hard working and as many sacrifices as we have all made to be here today, luck is sometimes all that stands between a people and a tyrant - so we are lucky as a people, to have this opportunity. Ten years ago, we may not have been able to see the day that I would be standing here making this announcement. Ten years ago, we could have lost much more than we did - we could have lost our very basic human right of self-determination. And so, today, we mark the opening not just of an election season, but also of the moment we as a society chose - ten years ago now - to say 'no, we will not be ruled over, we will not reigned upon, we will make our own futures." Taking a breath, the looked around the gathered crowd and gave them a moment to really hear his words.
He stood up completely straight once more and concluded with, "I'll now take questions."
