Backstory - Luna meets Hannah
December, 1994
|
** 1994 - Before the Yule Ball - Year of the Tri-Wizard Tournament ** The Great Hall seemed to always be buzzing with conversation. Whether it was over the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry Potter or the Yule Ball, there was always some sort of chatter. People were fretting over who to go with to the Yule Ball, what to wear, some feeling rejected or left out. Hannah was lucky that she had Ernie Macmillan for her best friend. All he did was look at her, as they always sat together, and said “Wanna go Han?” and Hannah had said “Yes!”. It was as easy as that between the two Hufflepuffs. She was definitely excited! Hannah never thought she’d ever get to go to a Ball, and to go with her best friend, it was going to be fun. She had just finished having lunch with Ernie and they’d parted ways. He had a class, Hannah had some spare time. In the hallway, Hannah stopped to see Luna Lovegood looking under all of the stone benches. Most people called her ‘Loony Lovegood’ and Hannah had always rolled her eyes. From what Hannah could tell she was very sweet and very smart. So when she kept looking under every bench, Hannah approached her. “Um, hi! Luna, right? Have you lost something?” Hannah smiled friendly at the girl who was still bent at the knees and peering about. Luna was quick to look up at the person saying her name, though her blonde head hit the underside of the bench she had been looking under with a soft thud. “Ouch!” She brought a hand up to rub at the spot on the back of her head that had hit the bench. Hannah flinched and knelt down beside Luna. “Are you alright? I’m sorry if I startled you.” “Oh that’s alright! It’s just that the nargles seem to have made off with my new sneakoscope.” She said with a slight frown, “I just got it too.” Not knowing much about Nargles or what they even were, Hannah focused on helping Luna. “I could help if you want?” her eyes darted about for a moment. “Forgive me for asking but what exactly is a Nargle?” A genuine smile for a genuine question followed. Bright blue eyes grew wide as she was asked just what a Nargle was. “Well, you see, they infest mistletoe so they are especially bad this time of year.” There was a definite sad little sigh about that, “They are notorious thieves. They’ve had it out for me since my first year.” “Really?” Hannah looked up at the mistletoe adorning a doorway and then looking back at Luna when they’d both stood up. “Do they leave tracks? Or traces of where they’ve been?” Hannah was known to have an open mind, bordering on being completely naive. Plus, Luna seemed to be out of sorts with her sneakoscope going missing. “They are very hard to see. I’ve got a pair of…” Luna moved to start patting down the pockets on her robe, trying to find her spectrespecs. After a moment of too much silence Luna pulled a pair of spectrespecs from a pocket, holding them up like a torch. “Spectrespecs. They help you see them. Would you like to try them?” Upon seeing the spectrespecs, Hannah smiled in wonder. “Where did you get these?” she gently took them from Luna and turned them over in her hand, extending the arms of the whimsical looking glasses. Putting them on, Hannah saw all sorts of different things and didn’t expect it at all. “My father made them, he’s experimenting to find a pair he can make to attach to an issue of his paper, the Quibbler.” Luna smiled dreamily as she watched Hannah put on the glasses. “What are we looking for exactly?” Hannah had no idea what a Nargle looked like. “If you look at the mistletoe you should see them. They look a little like a dust bunny, firefly, fruit fly, hybrid.” She pointed towards the mistletoe. Hannah lowered the glasses to look at the mistletoe with her own eyes, then lifted the spectrespecs again and couldn’t really believe her eyes. “Holy Helga… “ She repeated the motion a couple times until she smiled at Luna. “So, if we follow the Nargles with these… we may find your sneakoscope.” Hannah was officially the first person to believe Luna about her Nargles and she couldn’t have been happier. “Maybe, they might not all belong to the same colony. There’s a very bad infestation up in the Ravenclaw tower. They’ve been taking my things all year. So far they’ve taken my favorite sneakers, two good jumpers, and my book for potions. Professor Snape is very upset with me.” Then again, she was almost positive that Professor Snape really didn’t like Luna much. Laughing a little bit, just to make Luna feel better, she looked at the other girl before following the small little dust-bunny-esque creatures. “Well, Professor Snape is pretty much upset with everyone all the time. I wouldn’t worry. Maybe we’ll find your other things while looking for the sneakoscope!” Hannah was always the optimist when it came to other people, when it was just herself, not so much. “Oh, sweet Rowena! That would be wonderful! Do you really think we could?” She asked with an excited smile. “We can try!” Hannah really didn’t have anywhere else to be for a bit and she enjoyed Luna’s company so much, it was fun to spend time with her. “Where else have they put up mistletoe?” Trying to remember where she’d seen more, Hannah looked around and saw a jumper sleeve on a bench. “Luna, is that one of your jumpers?” It was a vibrant purple colour. “A lot of the doorways have mistletoe, I think it’s for the ball.” She said in a soft voice, she was a bit upset she wasn’t going, she was only too young by an entire year. It just wasn’t fair at all. “Oh! Let me check!” Luna hurried over to the sleeve that Hannah had pointed out, a slight pout gracing her features when she picked up the jumper. On the front of it was an ugly little cat playing with a ball of yarn, “This isn’t mine unfortunately. Maybe we should leave this area?” “At least you know the Nargles are targeting everyone’s belongings and not just yours.” Trying for a playful response, Hannah reached for the jumper. “We could drop this off with one of the professors in case someone was looking for it.” Luna seemed to brighten at the suggestion that Nargles were in fact stealing from everyone and not just Luna, she wasn’t alone after all! “That’s true! Thank you so much! You’re right though, we should return it. I think if we should do that last, just in case we find other things that need to find their owners.” As they searched more areas for mistletoe, they’d found a few odd things, a couple more textbooks - which weren’t Luna’s - but no sneakoscope yet. “Tricky little things!” Hannah said under her breath. During the searches Luna tended to drift off into her own world, she wouldn’t say much and just smile at Hannah. She really was having a fantastic time looking through the castle for her belongings, even if she wasn’t really finding anything of her own yet. “Merlin’s beard!” Luna cried out as the pair were checking down one of the corridors, Luna was standing behind a rather large statue at the end of the hall. It wasn’t her potions book, Snape wouldn’t be happy. “I think I found my Care of Magical Creatures book! I lost this ages ago!” At Luna’s exclamation, Hannah had thought she’d found her sneakoscope. “Oh!” She lifted the spectrespecs to rest on the top of her head. “Well, at least you found something! Maybe it means we’re on the right track?” Optimistically, Hannah patted Luna’s shoulder and nodded in the direction of another hallway decked out with holly, ivy and mistletoe. “I think they might be trickier than that.” Luna admitted with a soft laugh, “but I hope that we’re on the right track.” She got up from where she was to head down the new hallway. As she was walking down the hallway she noticed another book that was under a bench near a classroom. She bent down to pull it out, automatically flipping it open to the first page. “Oh! I found another book, this one belongs to a Hannah Abbott. She’ll be happy to get it back.” Hannah was looking under another bench when Luna had found a book that belonged to her. Not being able to help a laugh, she walked over to look at the book she’d lost in her second year. “I would at that.” She smiled at Luna. “I’m sorry I don’t even think I gave you my name before our quest. I’m Hannah Abbott.” |
