"Oh no, I know that you do a bit," Septimus insisted. She must put up with him, really. Anyone else in his life would have told him where to go quite a few years ago. He was the sort of man to forget his obligations because something else had come up and stolen it from his mind in an instant. The rest of their family didn't put up with Septimus. Ella only did because she was caring and really, genuinely loved him. That, and he'd known how to get his way and how to get out of trouble where she was concerned ever since he was tiny and he'd always taken full advantage of that fact. This was probably why her cats barked.
"I do look very nice all dressed up," he agreed, "Though your idea to have someone captivated by my obvious beauty didn't work at all well. I went to the bar, as instructed, and no one so much as glanced at me, Ella."
