It was early in the morning - not even 5:30 yet - when Kingsley knocked on Percy's door. Kingsley had - without a doubt - not slept the night before, but he looked fresh and energized and excited. He had no doubt their people would do the right thing. He'd said the whole time - Eugenia had secrets and family history that would make her dangerous as Minister, no matter how good at being Head of DMLE she was; Gaspard was out for the fame of it and probably just bored of being incredibly wealthy and had decided on a whim; and clearly the Parkinsons were angling for a return to the older, darker days of their recent past. He knew the people would reelect him, and so he wasn't worried, but that hadn't stopped him from working damned hard on the campaign, and keeping up with all of his duties as Minister, of course. Percy, on the other hand, had seen more recent, detailed, and totally secret from Kingsley poll numbers, and he wasn't sure what to make of what the people might do.
He gave Kingsley a smile and a nod and the older man sat quickly, clearly hyper. "So you'll take the podium at quarter to eight and polls will run from eight to six o'clock tonight. You're all set?" Kingsley would not normally ask Percy this, but Percy knew it was just a symptom of nerves. Percy had been surprised in the first place that Kingsley had wanted him to be the one to open the polls. Yes, normally it would be his job, of course, but with the gossip columnists still speculating on his personal and professional motivations, he'd done his best to keep a low profile outside of official Ministry business. He'd even had one of his Deputy Directors handle the less urgent election announcements, just to be on the safe side. But Kingsley had insisted, as he always had, that Percy was the best man for the job and he wouldn't have it any other way.
If this was Kingsley's last act as Minister, Percy was proud to have worked for the man for so long now.
And so a few hours later, Percy stood in front of the podium and the press, wearing one of Penelope's gifted ties, and announced the opening of elections for the Minister for Magic. Then, ten minutes later, polls across the country opened at magic day cares and community centres and libraries and in small Powys, Wales, even a local wizarding pub served as the voting spot. Every town, and in the larger cities ever neighborhood, had a designated voting centre, and the votes would be submitted via magic directly to the temporary Ministry Elections Department to be tabulated. After that, an independent polling company from Switzerland would go over the charms and the tabulations for the winner to be announced having been fully verified. Kingsley had wanted to make sure the entire process was double checked so it didn't look like ANYONE in the current administration had any chance to tamper with ANYTHING.
It was one of the reasons Percy was proud to cast his vote for him in London during his lunch break, not that he would say anything about his personal vote, of course.
