I'm working, but I definitely have time for lunch. I'm happy to do whatever you'd prefer. I guessed you'd been busy, so pick the least stressful option for you!

The past month had passed in a blur for Tate. He would wake up every morning, bright and early so that he could get in a quick jog, before he would head into work. He had started spending most nights doing one of two things, either heading over to Naomi's to spend time with Zeke, or he was picking up extra catering jobs around the city with his friends. Naomi had helped him put the word out, he was sober, he wanted to make extra cash because they had a son. It was working so far, awkwardly enough his latest gig had been catering the dinner at Addi's house the night before.

With everything going on, he hadn't found the time to tell Persephone what was going on. He had left notes here and there, attached to little containers that held leftovers, from the catering jobs. He thought she could use for lunch or dinner if she was ever in a bind. The notes were always quick, something about where he was if it was a job, and what time he might be coming home. He generally didn't have time to drop off notes when he was leaving to head to Naomi's, he tended to leave right after work.

This was one of the first days he was getting time alone with Zeke, giving Naomi time to rest. He knew he needed to introduce the little man to the magical world, and he needed to do it before Naomi passed away. Taking him to meet Persephone sounded like a fantastic way to combine both of those things. First Tate and Zeke had popped by Honeydukes to pick up some candy for Zeke, he had been entertained with their chocolate frogs. Tate had a few extra in his pocket to share with Perse once they arrived. They had ended the outing by picking up take away from the Leaky for the three of them to enjoy lunch. He had timed it perfectly so that the pair arrived at Persephone's office just five minutes before she was to go on lunch.

He didn't know if he was allowed to just go up to her office, he had been to the clinic a bunch to see his therapist, but he had never been to visit Persephone. Awkwardly enough, he stood in the main waiting area, with Zeke in his arms, and shot her a quick message to let her know that he was there. He had thankfully learned to balance kid that he had on his hip, his arm under his behind to hold him up, while holding the bag in the same hand. It freed up his hand so that he could continue to hold his phone, to watch in case she told him to just head to her office.

Persephone's phone buzzed on her desk, but she didn't reach for it straight away. She finished updating her last patient's record, frowning slightly as she clicked save as she hoped that the computer wouldn't crash like it had earlier. Luckily, it did what she wanted and Persephone straightened her keyboard and mouse to right angles and made sure that all her quills were back in their pot.

Since last night's disaster of dinner, she'd been extra fretful about making sure things were in exactly the right place. She could even feel herself doing it, but couldn't stop it.

Seeing Tate's message, Persephone went to meet him herself. It was only a short walk to reception, after all, and she had been sitting for most of the morning. To her surprise, Tate was holding a young boy and looking just a tad awkward. "Tate? Do we have company for lunch?" She smiled at the boy, who was looking around curiously.

Tate looked away from what Zeke was showing him when he heard Perse, those grey eyes finding his roommate easily enough as she made her way over to him. "We do." He told her with a smile, turning enough so that Persephone could see Zeke better.

"He's my son.. It's why I've been all over the past month." He couldn't help but spew the most important parts first. "I wanted to talk to you about it all, while we had lunch? I know it's a shit thing to spring it on you like this, but I feel like I ran out of time to be able to tell you over the phone or something." It had all become more serious, especially since Naomi's health was steadily declining.

"I picked up the food already, I can tell you more over food?" He slid his phone into his pocket then, before taking the food with his free hand so that he wasn't holding it under the child anymore.

There was no beating around the bush here, it seemed. Tate had a son? How had she not known? But if it was something he'd been trying to tell her, maybe that meant it was something that he hadn't known either. She didn't want to make assumptions, but this was clearly more than the casual lunch that she had been expecting.

"Of course ye can." She took the food so that he only had one thing to worry about carrying. "We'll go to my office. It'll be nice and private." She smiled at the boy as they walked. "You're a handsome wee lad, aren't you? I'm Persephone. It's nice to meet you."

Tate couldn't help the sigh of relief that slipped from him when she offered up her office, he would definitely feel more comfortable in her office. He wondered if it looked like his therapists office, were all the offices here the same? That was ridiculous, wasn't it? Why was he worried about what her office looked like?

A soft laugh slipped from Tate as Zeke gave Persephone a toothy little smile, "I'm Zeke, this is my daddy." Just in case she didn't know, "Do you like Mickey?" One of Zeke's favorite stories before bed was all about how Mickey got his dog Pluto. Tate still didn't understand the book, he didn't understand why Goofy could speak, but Pluto couldn't. It was a ridiculous hang up, but he enjoyed the book of how Mickey got Pluto if only because Zeke loved it.

"His mother reached out to me just before Halloween, to let me know what I've been missing out on. She had heard I was uh..." Could he say sober in front of the little? "Not drinking." He finished, for lack of a better word to use. He didn't know if sober was a bad word or not, it was better though to keep Zeke from asking about it for now. He was also going to try to sidestep talking about Naomi's cancer if he could. "Mom's a muggle though, so today we're exploring the magical world. We're going to stop by to visit Rolf and the animals before we go home."

"I don't think I know Mickey," Persephone admitted. "You'll have to tell me about him later."

So a lot had changed for Tate over the last month or so. No wonder that Persephone had barely seen him around. That was a huge thing to have dropped on you, but from what she'd seen he was still going to work and still sober, so she felt a warm, proud feeling as she smiled at the pair of them.

"You're in luck, Zeke. I have some toys in my office. Ye can play with them when you've eaten your lunch." A while back she'd realised that some of her patients already had kids, so she had put together a small toy box to entertain any youngsters that might come with their mothers to appointments. If Zeke was only now just exploring the magical world, the toys might be eye-opening for him.

Tate had one of those moments, where he knew that he should have known Persephone would be fantastic with Zeke. He was even more relieved to hear that she had toys in her office, he was going to be able to tell her all of it. If Zeke could stay distracted by the new toys, he would be able to fill Persephone in on everything that was happening.

When the three entered Persephone's office, Tate went about setting out the food. He set out Zeke's food first, and the boy picked up his fries to start eating. "How's your day going?" He was going to keep the subjects light for now, he knew Zeke wouldn't likely eat too much before he went off to play. The portions weren't meant for a three year old stomach, they were meant for adults. Tate just intended to take whatever was left home with hi.

"It's been fine," Persephone admitted. "Pretty quiet so far. Looks like I'll have a chance to catch up on paperwork this afternoon." She frowned slightly. "Not my favourite thing, but a necessary evil." She took her food from Tate, rearranging it on her desk.

"I'm guessing you've probably had a busier day than me." She eyed Zeke curiously, wondering how much Tate would say in front of the boy. "Where have you been exploring?"

Tate nodded his head, "I was never good with paperwork. Thankfully the only paperwork I really need to fill out now is just nightly dump logs." He had to account for anything that went to waste, though he hadn't really had to do that in months. At least not since working at Sweet Nothings, since he didn't work the night shift. He tended to only work mornings, he was enjoying starting his day with fresh baked goods.

When she eyed Zeke curiously, Tate's own head turned to glance at his son. "Honeydukes mostly, we really like the chocolate frogs." He admitted with a laugh, while Zeke nodded his head happily when he heard Tate mention the chocolate frogs, though his mouth was too busy with the fries to put in his opinion.

Tate shifted to lean closer to Persephone then, whispering since he didn't feel right casting a muffliato charm on his own son. "Her name is Naomi, we dated when I lived in France. She has cancer." He was hoping that would clue Persephone in enough to get the gist of things, he wondered if he could speak in code enough around Zeke. He waited to see if the boy was even listening, though he seemed to be preoccupied with his food. A man after Tate's own heart.

"The computer makes things a bit easier," Persephone admitted. "But I'm still not all that speedy with it." She was more confident than she had been at the beginning of the year.

At the mention of Honeydukes, she grinned. "Well, who doesn't like chocolate frogs? Did you see ZJ?" If they hadn't, Persephone was sure she could arrange a little visit for Zeke to see some of the real marvels of the shop.

Things started to come together then. Zeke's mother had just reached out and she had cancer. Clearly the prognosis wasn't good. "Is there anything I can do to help you?" she asked.

"I'm not half bad with them, if you ever need help with it all, I could try?" Tate didn't know why he was offering, he wasn't that good with computers. He could do the basics though, he would just hope that it would be enough if she ever asked for help.

Tate gave a chuckle when the other woman mentioned her friend, shaking his head. "She wasn't there today, we'll have to go back sometime with you. That way we can get VIP treatment." A teasing smile accompanied his words, he didn't think that was actually a thing.

He had thought about that question a lot since Naomi had told him about her cancer, he had tried to figure out if Persephone or Eli could do anything for Naomi. It was something he wanted to talk to Eli about first, and because of that he gave Persephone a head shake. "I don't think there's anything right now. I'm going to need another room in a few months," Naomi only had a few months left, and Tate wasn't entirely sure how it was all going to work. "When everything happens. I'll help you fill my room though, I don't want to leave you high and dry. I really like living with you." He'd like to believe they had a friendship, he was hoping they might be able to keep it once he had to go about moving.

"I should be okay," Persephone said with a soft laugh. "I haven't broken it yet; I'm just slow."

Tate thought he was joking, but Persephone knew if she had a word with ZJ then they could make the visit really magical for little Zeke.

Her smile turned sad and she picked at her food. "I like living with you, too." But things would obviously have to change. Zeke had to come first and she couldn't be upset about that. It wasn't like Tate was just springing this on her, either. "Dinnae worry about me. I'll be just fine." Perhaps she wouldn't even try to fill the room again straight away.

Tate knew that she said not to worry about her, yet he knew that he was going to worry about her. He didn't know if it was okay if he were to live with her and Zeke, if they were to move into a bigger flat. He didn't think that was something he could ask her either, while they were friends, he didn't think their relationship was to the level that he could ask her to move in with him and a kid. That was something that he knew he could only ask someone he was in a romantic relationship with, or someone that had been in his life for longer than the year they had been living together.

"It might not be for a while, I'm not entirely sure. I'm still figuring out all of that." He was hoping to have Eli look over Naomi's records, that maybe there was something muggle doctors had missed. He was trying not to get his hopes up though, he hadn't asked for her records yet, and he hadn't even approached Eli about his hairbrained idea just yet. He really needed to find out more about cancer, and exactly what kind Naomi had.

In a bold move, Tate reached his hand out to rest lightly on top of Persephone's a moment. "I would really like to stay in touch too. I know we have a million friends and family members in common, but I was hoping that we could stay friends." He bit his lower lip then, he wanted to tell her just how he felt suddenly. The urge hit hard, and he couldn't shake it. He knew now was not the time, he needed to get his head about him. He blamed it all on being so busy between Zeke, Emilia, work, and everything else. "Besides, what am I supposed to do with my dog, hm? He loves you far too much, more than he loves me," he teased, giving her a crooked grin.

"Take all the time you need," Persephone assured him. "This is a big thing for you both." She didn't want him to rush into things when he had to make big changes. "If you want... we could switch rooms?" She frowned a little as she thought it through. "Mine's a bit bigger. More room if Zeke wants to spend the night."

Tate's hand on hers made her smile. He'd always been so sweet since the first time they had met. That they had turned out to have many friends in common had just been a bonus; he was a great room mate even without the other connections. "Oh, he's a wee daftie," she said fondly. "He'll forget all about me when he's got Zeke as his new best friend. Though he might pine a bit at first."

Tate wanted to hug the woman just then, she was offering to switch rooms? He couldn’t ask that of her, he knew that if he were to take Zeke overnight, he’d end up sharing his own bed. That or he would sleep on the sofa, so long as she didn’t mind that he would camp out there for the night. “I don’t think we would need to, I can always bunk on the couch? Thank you though, it means a lot. This is all… It’s a lot,” he admitted in a soft voice, a voice that likely gave away the fact he was a bit terrified about it all. Could he keep up with his sobriety, raise his son, and work? He knew logically it was doable, people did it every day, but he still worried. The worry seemed to peek out at the oddest times, right now being one of those.

She smiled! He knew it was ridiculous, but his heart soared when she smiled at him. He knew it was ridiculous; he needed to fight these feelings that he had for her. Yet as he sat across from her, he didn’t want to so much anymore.

A chuckle slipped from him when she called the dog a daftie, nodding his head. “He can be, but he seems to love you something terrible. You’ll at least have to promise you’ll come by to visit us all often.” Tate shot her a playful smile then, a mischievous boy look gracing his darker features as an idea struck him. “If you don’t, I’ll just have to call you anytime he scrapes a knee. We need only the best doctors, you’re one of the best. You might not handle skinned knees often, but I don’t think Zeke will mind. Will ya buddy?” Tate asked the two year old, grey eyes glancing at his son, who had his mouth filled with food, but the three year old was nodding his head along. Tate knew it was unlikely the little dude knew what he was talking about, at least he was agreeing!

"Okay." She hadn't been sure whether he would take her up on the offer, but it had felt like the right thing to offer. Tate had always done nice things for her like cooking diner after a long day at work, so she wanted to try and making some things easier for him if she could.

"I'm so glad you adopted him," Persephone admitted. "I might have to finally get my own fuzzy companion." She left the when you've moved out unspoken. It would be better not to dwell on that just yet. "We'll come visit you for walkies." The look Tate gave her made her laugh. "You've got my number. You can call or text me any time."

"I am too. I think he's helped me prepare a bit for this," he said with a nod of his head towards Zeke. While he knew that nothing would ever really prepare him for raising his son, having to take care of another living thing he thought was helping him at least learn a little responsibility. He couldn't regret the little mop of a dop.

"Perfect," he said with a warm laugh, he knew they had a lot of friends in common and tended to end up at the same events a lot, but he wanted to be sure that they were friends as well.

"How have things been with you?" He was curious how things had been as of late, he knew he'd been terrible about checking in lately. He wondered if she might be up for dinner sometime soon, he'd have to ask her later.

Persephone shrugged, picking at her food again. "Things have been fine. I haven't really been doing much outside of work." She didn't really like admitting that aloud, but there it was. It had been a few months since she had broken up with Olivier and she hadn't so much as dipped a toe in the dating pool again. Yesterday's mess of a dinner party wasn't particularly inspiring in that regard either; it was another thing she could add to her reasons why she should remain single, another layer to the armour that she needed to build up.

"This place keeps me busy," she said by way of explanation.

He knew that he shouldn't be concerned, she did have a job that would keep someone busy all the time. There were so many pregnant witches lately, it was like every time he turned around someone else was growing round with a new child. He imagined that kept Persephone plenty busy, and yet Tate worried about Persephone. He needed to find time, it was a precarious game that he was playing. He was trying to beat death, cramming as much into what little time Naomi had left, while trying to keep up with his own life. He was falling behind in a few areas, though he tended to still find time to pop in on Dora.

"That's understandable," he said with a nod. "If you're up for it ever, we could get out every now and then for a roommate dinner. Catch up properly with each other, without prying little ears." He thought they might also continue to get together once he moved out, but he would approach that when he had to face the reality of moving out. "We could even go to one of those karaoke nights or something at V-Bar. They're always good for a laugh."

Persephone smiled faintly, suddenly rendered a little emotional by Tate's suggestion. "I don't know what I did to deserve a flatmate like you. I'd really like that." She quite enjoyed karaoke; her voice wasn't anywhere near as good as ZJ's, but she had some good enthusiasm when she did take to singing.

"Merlin, I never thought I'd end up such a workaholic. Moving back here was supposed to give me a break from working all the time." She shrugged, a touch embarrassed. "I guess I never really got out of the habit."

"You know, I've thought the same thing?" Tate admitted, though his cheeks were a bit pink with the admission. It went a little deeper than that, though he knew he couldn't voice that. It wasn't something he should be even considering, especially with Zeke now in the picture. He was being ridiculous about this crush on Persephone, yet he couldn't shake it. He enjoyed not just living with her, but her company when they would hang about as friends, as well as these more serious moments.

"Have you ever heard the saying, Old habits die hard?" he asked curiously. "You need to just start doing other things with the time that you keep throwing into work. Make a plan for yourself, every Thursday at 7pm you'll be home and we will watch a movie of the other's choosing, depending who chose the week before. That way, you'll have a set time you need to be someplace and not get sucked into work." His cheeks blazed a brighter red then, a nervous laugh slipping from him. "That was a bit too far, but I found it helps me if I make myself a schedule like that. I'm notorious for spending hours in the kitchen and never coming out to enjoy the world when I need to be." It was what had started him down the wrong path when he was young, he would burn himself out work until 3am, going out with the crew until all hours, and then coming back in the morning. He hadn't been able to keep up, so he had found a way. Tate was glad he had broken the cycle.

"Aye, I've heard of it." But she was very good at falling into habits and very bad about breaking them.

Tate was blushing and Persephone wasn't sure why. It sounded very organised and that actually appealed to her in her current state of mind. "Wednesdays are a wee bit better for me," she teased gently. "How about this? I'll try to text ye more so we know when we're both going to be home of an evening."

"Sounds like a plan to me," Tate agreed with a crooked grin. "We can change things up if our schedules don't align for it."

Even if they weren't consistent on getting together every week for dinner, Tate was relieved that she was still willing to keep up a friendship with him whether he moved out or not. He was trying hard not to poke too much at this crush he'd found himself having on her, but he was looking forward to spending more time with her. He pushed all those thoughts away though, focusing instead on enjoying the rest of his lunch with her.
