That name haunted her from the second she had hung up with the phone with Hyperion, Lara Wilkinson. She knew there was no way she was going to be able to wait out the rest of her shift, she needed to speak with her father about this, if only so that it would help make that vaguely nauseous feeling disappear. She didn't hesitate as she called up her afternoon girl, much to Zahara's relief, she would be there within the hour.
In her rush to get over to her parents home, she didn't stop to warn them that she was going to coming by. It made no difference however, Zahara arrived in the kitchen to a usual scene. Her father was standing in front of a large vat that was changing color as the older gentlemen in the white lab coat stirred something else into it. With Ambrosius wearing his large safety goggles and neon green gloves that came up to his elbows, he looked like a mad scientist. It caused her to smile, it was such a familiar sight, the lab coat the same one she would wear as a little witch helping her father in the kitchen.
"Hey Pop?" Zahara called out when the initial pop of her apparating into the kitchen didn't catch her father's attention.
Ambrosius turned from the pot he had been working on, "Zahara!" His smile reaching high enough to make his eyes sparkle. He had yet to see Zahara since she had come over to share the news of her engagement, his little girl was growing up. She was even expanding the family business, into a whole new territory with the deliveries. He had been worried after she had left school, when she didn't seem to have a purpose. He didn't need to worry about her anymore, she was responsible. He thought he might even be able to retire someday soon, maybe turn it all over to her.
"What're you doin' here, love?" He moved then to put a lid on the pot, it was as done as it was going to get. It was then he lifted the goggles to the top of his head, while he watched his daughter nervously wringing her hands together. "Everything alright?" There was concern in his voice, he wondered if he should call for Jane. She had gone upstairs after lunch to start a knitting project for Christmas, she was making something for their daughter's new friend. Ambrosius hadn't pried, so he wasn't entirely sure what it was.
Now that she was standing here in front of him, she had lost her voice. What if this was something bad? She had come up with all sorts of fantastic ideas on her way over, none of which ended well. Finally, she spit her words out, "Who is Lara Wilkinson?" Hazel eyes grew wider as she watched the color drain from her father's face, this definitely wasn't going to be good.
Ambrosius crossed the room in what felt like one large step, he was suddenly standing there in front of his daughter. "How do you know that name?" Was a hushed whisper between them. When he thought about it, Ambrosius had always intended to tell Zahara, he had just been selfishly waiting until her mother passed. He knew wizards outlived muggles by an entire lifetime, he saw no reason to hurt Jane. It had been a weak moment, once just after Zahara had been born. She had been a fussy child, running the business, as well as having to be a father had taken a toll. He had lied to Jane, told her that he was working late on new projects, when in reality he had been sitting at a bar with another woman, Lara Wilkinson.
"What does it matter?" Came Zahara's louder reply, she could only assume he had whispered because he intended to keep it from her mother. Though as soon as she had said it, she regretting it immediately. "I mean," She frowned then, voice lowering a bit. "This boy from my school came in to get a gift for his mother, it's her birthday soon..." She was nervously twisting her engagement ring around her finger, idly running a nail over the stone. "Anyway, when he left he told me to ask you about her... Who is she?" She didn't whisper, but she wasn't shouting her question at him, she still didn't have any evidence that something was going on. She just had that bad feeling twisting up her insides.
"Zahara..." Ambrosius started, his tone softer, and his eyes already asking forgiveness. Neither father, nor daughter, heard the stairs squeak as Jane made her way downstairs. "It was a mistake.. Gods..Over twenty years ago." He didn't know how to start this, though he knew he had to come clean. "It was just after you were born, everything was so different. There was the shop, you, our family, everything.. It's no excuse for what happened... If that Andrew that walked into the shop was Lara's son..." The tension was so thick, he knew he was going to shatter their family and he didn't want to say it. "He's your brother."
Her eyes had been filling with tears as he spoke, she had caught on to where this was going. Well, she had figured that he had been cheating, the new extra knowledge that she had been standing in front of her brother this afternoon. Not just her brother either, he had brought his daughter in with him. She couldn't seem to process all of it, she knew she had to tell her father that he was a grandfather.
While Zahara tried to find her thoughts, Jane broke her silence as her glass dropped from her hands and shattered on the floor. Zahara jumped at the sudden noise, while Ambrosius whirled around with wand already out to clean up the mess on the floor. "Jane!" He cried out in surprise, just before the shattered glass repaired itself and then deposited itself into the sink.
"You have a son?" Jane asked in a pained tone, which seemed to help Zahara find her voice. "And a granddaughter." She piped up from where she was behind Ambrosius. It all happened so fast then, Ambrosius had taken what his daughter had said wrong, he had realized too late that she wasn't pregnant, Andrew had a daughter. The look of excitement that had crossed his features had been enough for Jane however, she had slapped the wizard as hard as she could. "How dare you!" She shouted at her husband, "Were you ever going to tell me?"
Zahara knew this should have been a fight just for her parents, yet she was trapped in the kitchen with them as they had it. She watched as her father glanced between the two women in his life, unable to find his words it seemed at the new line of questioning. She watched as her father made everything so much worse, "I had intended to tell Zahara after you had passed." He blurted out, unable to come up with a response. He had never lied to Jane about anything, except for this. He knew it was a very big except, one that was going to likely ruin his family.
"How could you?!" Zahara shouted at her father, while she watched her mother start to cry, just before she walked away to head back upstairs. Zahara pushed past her father, as he tried to make a grab for his daughter to bring her back. He wanted to make her understand, all Zahara wanted to do was get to her mother.
Jane looked up as Zahara came into her room, where she was trying desperately to pull the suitcase from under their bed but the sticking charm that held it in place was too much for her. "Mum, what are you doing?" Zahara asked, while she fished her wand from her pocket, helping her mother get the suitcase out from under the bed. "I can't stay here Zahara!" Jane shouted at her daughter through her tears, immediately regretting it as Zahara came over to where she was on the floor, wrapping her in a hug. She leaned into her daughter's embrace as she cried harder, Ambrosius had been lying to her for over twenty years, how was she supposed to trust him?
"Come stay with us? Please?" Zahara begged her mother, seeing her mother like this was scaring her. Her mother had always been so strong and sure of herself, seeing her break down like this had her worried. She knew it likely wouldn't help if she helped her mother run away from the problem, but she wasn't going to make her stay here with her father.
"Zahara.." Jane had been about to protest when she heard the door downstairs open and slam, Ambrosius never was good with conflict. It was one of those things that always dug at her, when they would fight, he would just shut down and run away. It seemed that he was intending to it with this too. "Alright, but only for a few days." Jane whispered, while she brought hands up to try to wipe away her tears. She had to pull herself together, at least long enough that she didn't scare her daughter more, or worry her son-in-law. "Will you gather my things while I slip into the loo?" She asked her daughter, who had been itching to help in any way she could.
With the help of magic, it took Zahara only a few minutes to have most of her mother's things packed away in the extendable suitcase. She hadn't taken everything, just her clothes, and the important bits. Some small part of her hoped her parents might be able to work through this, even though she knew if she had been in her mother's shoes, there wouldn't be any working through this.
While Zahara waited for Jane to join her, she had sent a quick message to Hyperion so that he would have a warning that they had a house guest. She had made promises to explain everything once they got there, she just wanted to get her mother to the flat.
Jane joined her a few moments later, another bag filled with all of her toiletries. "I got everything." Zahara said as she picked up the suitcase with one hand, slipping her arm through her mother's. She apparated them then to the entryway of the flat, adjusting the wards immediately to keep her father out. He didn't deserve that privilege anymore.
