Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, char: katherine bundy, char: neville longbottom, location: muggle london, time: 2009 09

Who: Kate Bundy & Neville Longbottom.
When: Saturday 16th September, Evening.
Where: Provender Resturant, London.
What: Nev & Kate’s First Date.
Warnings: None.

Since Kate had received the message from Neville inviting her to dinner, she had been left with more questions than answers. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go out to dinner with him, it was more that she wasn’t sure what to think about the night. Sure, she had received the night she had spent at the bar when she had bumped into Neville, but she wasn’t sure what this night was. Was this just dinner between newly acquainted friends? Or was this dinner in the date sense of the word? It wasn’t that she minded either way, as she found Neville to be charming and the conversation she had with him last time was more than enjoyable. It was just…Kate wasn’t very good at dates. Hell, she was not even that great at realising that guys even liked her quick enough, to get to a date most of the time.

Fussing with her hair in the mirror for the sixth time in the last ten minutes, she eventually gave up, deciding that she was not going to get much better without being late. Throwing a coat on over her little black dress, she grabbed her bag and headed out into the night towards the restaurant. After walking for 10 or so minutes, she eventually arrived at the restaurant that she was due to meet Neville at, but there was no sign of him just yet. Standing by the entrance awkwardly, she looked down at her watch to check the time before she heard a noise behind her.

About an hour before he needed to leave to meet Kate, Neville's nerves had gotten the better of him. He must have tried on five different ties before he'd given up and tried to remember what both Harry and Ginny had told him. Add to that, he needed to stop fussing or he'd be late - as usual. So, with the restaurant being as posh as it was, he settled on just a plain suit and a black tie, apparating to the nearest safe location before walking to the bistro.

When he'd seen her standing there, and checking her watch, Neville checked his as well, terrified that he was in fact, late. But he'd heaved a sigh when he'd seen that she only liked to be early. "Hello, again." Neville greeted her with a broad grin when he'd approached. "You look lovely." Kate really did look beautiful and a touch of the nerves came back. But, hoping to dash them away, he motioned to the door. "Shall we go in? I hope you werent' waiting long."

Kate couldn’t help but smile brightly when Neville came into view, she had been so worried that she would be late, or wouldn’t find the place, or that he may not even turn up. She knew the last part was particularly stupid seeing as he was the one that had asked her, but it was still something that had crossed her mind. Taking in Neville’s appearance, she could not help but feel the flutter of nerves hit her stomach. While she had thought that Neville was handsome the other day in his casual wear, scars and all. Stood in front of her right now in his suit he looked something altogether different, he looked so classically handsome.

Kate looked down embarrassed at his compliment, trying to calm her blushing down a little. “You look very handsome” she added quickly. “Yes, let’s go in and no, I was not waiting long at all” Walking towards the door, she let Neville open the door for her before she made her way inside. His choice of restaurant at least cleared up one thing though, that this was more than dinner between two new acquaintances. “So, have you been here before?” she asked in a vain attempt to make small talk

Neville tried his very best not to be bumbling in his nervousness. It had been a long time since he'd been out on a date and he didn't want to muck it up at all. Kate was lovely, and they had gotten on well meeting in the pub. He wanted very much to see if they still got on well. "Oh, thanks. I don't usually wear a suit. Honestly, I was hoping this still fit right." He'd gone slightly sheepish and felt like he should apologize, but he truthfully never needed to wear suits with the Professor's robes.

"Good, I'm glad." Neville held the door open for Kate and followed her in. "Actually, I'd found it by accident and kept it in mind. It's a good thing." He had his best smile on, honestly happy and easing as the date actually had begun. When they were shown to their table, Neville held the chair out for Kate - ever the gentleman - and sat opposite her, tucking his tie down as he did so. "Shall we start with some wine and you can tell me how your weekend has been so far."

“No, it fits very well” Kate blurted, before she realised how that comment might have sounded. It wasn’t that she didn’t think that Neville looked attractive normally, it was just the sight of him in a suit had caught her off guard. She was initially taken back a little when Neville held out the chair for her. It wasn’t that it was a bad thing, far from it. It was more that she could not remember the last time that someone had been that considerate to her on a date. Undoing her coat, she moved to hang it on the back of her chair, before turning back to face Neville. Looking around the restaurant, Kate felt infinitely glad that she had chosen to wear the black dress that she had. Not knowing what sort of place, they were going to, she had not wanted to look to overdressed or underdressed for the situation.

“Some wine would be fantastic” she nodded in agreement. It had been a long time since she had been on a date, and she couldn’t help but feel her nerves creeping up on her a little. “My weekend has been lovely so far, thank you. I floo’ed to my parents’ house and helped my Dad with Harvesting plants in the Greenhouse most of the day, before popping home not long before now. What about yourself?

"Oh, thank you." Kate's comment was more than encouraging and Neville actually looked down at the suit that actually had needed some last minute tailoring, but it wasn't too bad at all. He wouldn't be himself if his manners didn't shine through and he was quite sure his Gran would've apparated to clip his ear if he wasn't anything less than a perfect gentleman. Neville really did hope that Kate didn't catch his double take when she'd taken her coat off - the dress was even more lovely now that he could see it, and Kate herself made it evne more lovely.

"Brilliant." Neville ordered them a bottle to share when a waiter brought over water and their menus. "Oh!? What were you harvesting?" he asked, fully interested and setting his menu down to focus his full attention on her.

Kate couldn’t help but feel relief when Neville questioned her about Herbology, Dating and talking about herself on the other hand made her want to be sick. At least with Herbology it was a topic she could confidently talk about without much effort. “Mandrake, Venomous Tentacula and Gillyweed, hence why he needed some back up today. It was good though, we both managed to make it through the harvest without one of us getting bitten, so it was a success” she beamed positively. “What about you? Have you been up to much this weekend?”

"That's a fair big of harvesting. Your father must be glad to have you helping." Neville was more than interested, and it was Herbology so he was well-versed. "Gran always has me tending to the gardens but when it comes to harvesting the greenhouses, she tends to steer clear." His grandmother did have a love of her garden and Neville was always pleased to keep it impressive.

"I'm afraid it hasn't been as pleasant as yours. I spent the morning grading papers and making sure the lesson plan for Devil's Snare is up to date." Their wine arrived and Neville leaned back as it was poured for them. The bistro was more posh than he anticipated, but they had a quiet corner and everything seemed to be going well. "I'll be harvesting at home next weekend..." he had wanted to ask if she would like to join him, but didn't want to seem to presumptuous.

“Yes, he supplies a number of Potions Masters do it can get a bit to chaotic for one person, I enjoy it all though. I find it quite therapeutic to spend a bit of time outside after spending the whole week inside. You know how it can be with the ministry at times”

Kate scrunched her face up slightly at the thought of spending a Saturday indoors, marking papers. “Oh that does not sound fun” . When the waiter arrived with the wine, Kate paused for a moment allowing it to be poured. Picking up the glass, she took a sip of the wine hoping it might calm her nerves a little. “That will make a nice change to marking papers” she offered before pausing for a moment, debating what to say next. “If you need a second set of hands…..I’m free next weekend if you would like help”

"That has to be rewarding for him. I have a friend that does the same. She supplies the general public too, but I agree, it is a bit much for one person. Especially if it's his main business?" Neville remembered from their conversation at the bar that Kate's father was an Herbologist, but perhaps he did more than just supply Potions Masters.

He laughed amiably and nodded. "It was more than a touch dreary, especially when the weather is still nice." More than once he'd caught himself gazing out of his window at the lake instead of grading. Neville sipped his wine after Kate had taken her first taste. As if she'd read his mind, he raised an eyebrow and couldn't help a grin. "That...wouild be amazing. Unless your father needs more assistance, of course. I'd like it very much. I could give you a tour."

“Oh, it is. He does do some sales to the Public too, but it is mainly friends and family more than people off the street. A lot of his work for Potions Masters is just a way of funding his love of getting more and more rare and obscure plants. I used to love going to his greenhouse as a child, it felt like I was walking into the jungle” she said wistfully, thinking of her childhood summers spent playing in the large greenhouse.

“Oh, my Dad will be fine. Most of the plants were harvested last weekend and this, so there isn’t much left to do now apart from soil preparation” While Kate felt bad about abandoning her Dad next weekend, it wasn’t like she couldn’t go over on Friday night or Sunday to lend him a hand. With the long hours that came with her job, it wasn’t often that she got the opportunity to meet someone that she liked, so she wanted to make sure there would be another date/meeting. “A tour would be lovely, I very much look forward to it…..that is as long as I am not imposing of course”

Hearing about Kate's father, Neville thought he'd get along well with the man. He himself had a bit of a small jungle on the grounds of Longbottom House. "It's a good way to do it. Has he obtained anything interesting lately?" The look on Kate's face was lovely, Neville could tell she'd gone back in time for a moment.

The corners of Neville's mouth turned up in a grin and hoped his face hadn't gone too pink. They'd already agreed on a second date, or meeting. It didn't matter, he would get to spend more time with Kate. "Of course, you're not imposing at all. It's so rare that I find someone that hasn't been given a tour. Most of my mates are bored to death of me going on and inviting them to come by." He laughed just then, knowing his friends only over-exaggerated for a laugh. "It's easily reachable by floo, I'll give you the address through the week."

“Last thing I heard, he was nursing some rare variety of Mexican Dittany” she explained before taking another sip of her wine. “Apparently he is one of only 3 people in the UK to be growing it currently, so he is very busy with that currently”

Kate blushed, knowing that her offer might have seemed forward of her. She did genuinely want to see his garden though, as she loved spending time outside at the weekends. The fact that she would get to spend extra time with him? Well, that was just an extra bonus. “That sounds lovely, I look forward to it” While the date hadn’t been going on that long, she was enjoying the easy relaxed flow of conversation. It wasn’t often that Kate got a chance to spend time with someone that shared interests of hers, especially one so handsome.

“So tell me, when you are not busy with School or your gardens, what else do you like to do?”

"Ah, I know of it. Yes, it's particulary tricky, but from what all I've heard, I'm sure he can get it to cooperate." Neville didn't mention that perhaps... he may be another of the three who was in possession of the dittany.

Their dinner arrived and it broke Neville's gaze from Kate's for a moment when their plates were set down. He couldn't really believe he'd only bumped into her by chance once before. She was very pretty, he liked her smile very much. Actually, Neville liked much more about her than just her smile. He was completely at ease and it wasn't the wine at all.

"Oh, not much. I read a lot, go out with some mates from school to watch other friends play Quidditch. And you?"

When their food arrived, Kate took a moment to compose herself tucking a stray bit of hair behind her ear so it did not get in her face. The night was going so much better then she had anticipated. Not that she thought that it was going to go badly, it was more the fact that she didn’t go out on many dates, so she was not as good as flirting and dating like some of her friends. That’s why she tended so often to bury herself in work, so as not to feel the stark emptiness of not having someone to greet her when she got home, or to look forward to seeing.

“I am awfully boring I am afraid. I tend to spend a lot of my time with niece Daisy, but when I am not with her, then reading, cooking and going to the muggle cinema”

Neville was contemplating how the night was going when their food arrived, and Kate seemed to be quiet - he wondered if she was thinking the same thing as he was? How easy it was to talk, to get to know each other when before, with others, it all seemed like a struggle. Neville was still slightly awkward, like he knew he would be, but at least he hadn't put his foot in his mouth, or rambled on about plants all night. Though with Kate, rambling about plants probably wouldn't have bothered her.

Their dinner was posh but looked very appetizing and Neville was glad he'd remembered the small bistro when he'd walked by the one day. "Oh, how old is your niece? Will she be going to school soon?" A small cut of meat was loaded onto Neville's fork and he ate and listened, each taking a turn to eat and talk, followed by more wine. "I haven't been to a muggle cinema in ages. Can't even remember what I had seen. A few mates insisted I go along."

Kate was having a wonderful time at the restaurant, the food was amazing, and the company was fantastic too. Sure, it had felt a little awkward in places, but she couldn’t remember having any first date that had not been. When the topic turned to her niece, she smiled brightly, pausing her eating of her dinner for a moment. “She turned five this year, so it will be another 6 years before you see her at Hogwarts. She is beyond excited about it though, she has heard so many stories from my brother, his wife and I growing up, that she is desperate to go herself”

“Oh you should, I love it so much! I try to go at least a couple of times a month to watch something” What she neglected to say was it usually tended to be on the occasions where she was bored and stuck in the flat on her own.

Neville was very glad that Kate's niece would not have to endure the kind of schooli life they had - to her it would be all magic and wonder, the way it was supposed to have been. It made Neville so glad to teach all of these kids and to see them so eager to learn. "I'm sure you're never short of stories for her either. Is there one she asks you to tell her?"

Finishing his dinner and taking another sip of wine, Neville's eyes wandered and he loved the colour, high on Kate's cheeks - even in the dim lighting of the restaurant. "I'd like to, I just never know what's playing unless I'm told by someone I know. I do like spy films a great deal, and just... silly, over the top comedies." He'd never admitted it out loud before, but he really did. "Do you fancy dessert at all? I've heard they make a lovely creme brulee."

Kate racked her brains to try and think of any story that her niece had heard to ask time and time again, but in reality, she was constantly asking to hear all of them. “I think really, it is about a six way tie…..one of her favourites though has to be my first time at Hogwarts. Right from getting on the train the first time, to the journey across the lake, the nervousness of waiting to be sorted. I mean, I was bloody terrified that I would be sorted in to a house away from my older brother. Daisy is a headstrong and fierce one though, so I doubt she will be nervous in the same way that I was. In fact, I would not be overly surprised if she ended up in your house in a few years’ time”

Finishing her dinner, she set the cutlery down on her plate and turned her attention back to her glass of wine. Tonight, had been such a lovely evening, it had all been so much easier and relaxed then she had dared hope for. “Well, if I see of any of either of those films coming up at any point, I will let you know…...?” Having enjoyed herself so much tonight, Kate would have agreed to pretty much anything to get the opportunity to talk to him for a little while longer, or to see him again after tonight. “Dessert would be lovely”

Neville was nodding in agreement, remembering very clearly his first night at Hogwart's. It was both terrifying and wonderful. "It's really the best story to tell in order to instill wonder and get them excited about the whole thing. I was actually astonished that I ended up a Gryffindor. I would have been perfectly happy as a Hufflepuff." Though, the sorting hat had other ideas and apparently was right to sort him as such. But Neville wasn't going to bring up why.

"That would be fantastic." Another notion at even more dates... this was more than encouraging, Neville was really taken off guard. He smiled down at the dessert menu while Kate perused hers.

When it arrived and they'd both enjoyed their puddings thoroughly, both of them had finished off the bottle of wine and Neville paid the bill, absolutely insisting that it be his treat. "It's still fair out, would you like to go for a walk?" They hadn't even left the restaurant yet and Neville really didn't want the evening to be over after dinner.

Kate bit her lip slightly, trying to figure out how best to reassure Neville that the sorting hat had made the right choice of his house. Even right now he seemed to insist on being so modest about what he had done for everyone, and if anything, this only made him more and more attractive to her. “While I agree that you would make a good Hufflepuff, from what I remember of school, I think that you were sorted into the right house”

Dessert went like the courses before them, and sped by far too quickly in Kate’s opinion. She had tried to offer to pay for her portion of the bill, but Neville being the true gentleman he was, had refused any attempt of hers to let her pay. Kate couldn’t help but feel sad when the night felt like it was coming to an end, so when Neville suggested they go for a walk, she was pleased for the extension on the evening. “A walk sounds lovely to me, if you have nowhere in mind, there is a lovely park nearby here” she suggested.

Neville gulped and smiled shyly, turning red at her praise. He never liked drawing any attention to what he had done in the year leading up to the war, and the battle itself, but sometimes it did come up. So when it did, he tried to remain modest and humble. "A Gryffindor with a green thumb, I guess." he played it off and smiled, easing himself back into their pleasant exchange.

The walk would definitely do the both of them some good - fresh air after a meal and a few drinks was always a great idea. Neville was very relieved that she knew of a park nearby, he didn't want to wander aimlessly and get them lost. "A park sounds perfect." Neville had plucked up Kate's jacket and held it open for her as they were leaving into the early night. Outside, it was cool and the sun was almost set, making everything pink and gold and Neville couldn't help but notice the red glints in Kate's hair when she'd put her jacket on.

Kate felt a little bad when she made her comment about him being a Gryffindor, especially when he turned red and went shy. She hadn’t meant to make him feel uncomfortable about it, but at the same time she couldn’t let him not acknowledge what he had done for so many of them at school. When he made his comment about being a Gryffindor with a Green thumb, she smiled brightly. “The very best type” she added.

When held her jacket for her, she could not help but feel impressed at such a gentlemanly gesture. The night had been so perfect, she could not have made it any better so far, if she had tried to imagine other scenario’s. If there was one thing she knew, it was she wanted to see Neville again, and hoped that he had felt the same way about their date. He was handsome, the perfect gentleman, interested in plants, modest and genuinely seemed to be the real deal.

When they finally got outside, she gestured in the direction of the park that she had found a few weeks previous nearby. “Thank you again for dinner, it has been such a wonderful night”

"You're very welcome, actually, it was my pleasure." He wasn't about to just blurt out that he hadn't been on many dates - he was sure Kate could tell. The night had been lovely though and Neville wanted to do everything he could to try to prolong their time together. Such as a walk in the park.

It was small, just like Kate had said, and the street lights were coming on. "The night isn't really over yet. It's just beginning." Neville cast a glance to the sun going down and then at the trees in the park, watching them stir in the slight breeze. "Are you warm enough?" Kate had a jacket, but Neville wanted to make sure. He had wanted to put his arm around her as they walked but figured that was far too forward.

Kate looked down at her feet, her cheeks blushing a bright shade of red when he said the night was his pleasure. As they walked towards the park, she tried her best to calm down the red she could feel on her cheeks.

When they arrived at the park, she felt a sense of relief that she remembered where it was properly. The park was as pretty as she remembered it during the day, if anything, it was prettier now at night with the sun going down. When a slight breeze caught them off guard, Kate shivered a little.

“It’s just a little cold, I’ll be fine” she said reassuringly, hoping it would not cut their night short. “Anyway, there’s a lovely patch of wildflowers this way that I think you will like”

Kate was very fetching when she was being shy, and Neville could relate. It was rare that he'd felt such pleasant nerves, he found himself distracted and looking away as well, knowing that the tips of his ears were probably turning crimson.

It was a lovely park that Kate had steered them to and he was interested in seeing what seemed to be her favourite part of the park. "Would you rather have my jacket, I run warm so...it's no trouble if you are cold." Neville put the offer out as they walked toward the wildflowers.

Kate had been right, it was a sight to see, even at night. "That's impressive. I'm sure it's even more vibrant during the day," he mused out loud, looking at everything. Some blooms had closed up in the dimming light, but Neville looked toward a stone wall nearby and found night-blooming jasmine creeping up the side. "This really is lovely. And... so..are you." It was a rather bold statement and move, Neville wasn't used to saying such things out loud, but he blamed it on the evening being so pleasant.

He couldn't really help but tuck the errant lock of her hair that came loose back behind Kate's ear. Neville gulped heavily and smiled, looking into her eyes and, well, it was now or never. So, plucking up his courage, he leaned in to kiss her softly.

While Kate was more confident now, then she ever had been in her life, there was something about tonight that had reverted her back to being a blushing, shy teenager, who could not look the boy that she liked squarely in the eye without going silly. Glancing to her side, she was slightly relieved to see that her situation was not unique to her, as it had appeared Neville was feeling shy also. Kate shook her head and rested a gentle hand on his arm, when he made her his offer of his jacket. “That is very kind of you, but I wouldn’t want you to get cold on my account”

Kate couldn’t help but beam with satisfaction, when she saw his reaction to the wildflower patch in the park. Truth be told, she had the same reaction to it, when she had found it. It was so rare to find something so beautiful in the city like them, and it had also reminded her of some of the flowers in a small meadow near her parent’s.

She had been so lost in the moment, enjoying the scenery that when Neville made his comment about her being lovely, she was caught off guard. Butterflies filled her stomach in anticipation of what she hoped was about to come next, a feeling that only intensified when he tucked a bit of her hair behind her ears and looked into her eyes. When she felt his soft lips against hers, her hand instinctively came up to caress his face. If there was one thing for sure, he could not have picked a more romantic time and place to make a move on her, and for this she knew she just had to see him again after tonight.

"Just let me know if you change your mind." Neville was definitely all smiles that night and his nervous energy made Kate's touch to his arm made him want to hold her hand. He didn't though when he was shown the wildflowers and they both stood for quite awhile, just admiring the garden.

If there had been another time to kiss her, Neville would have had no clue. It felt like such a perfect time and place. Kate had kissed him back, softly and ever so light while he drew her in close with his arms around her back. It was so nice in fact, that Neville continued, kissing her again and tilting his head slightly, just once more - anything more and he feared that she would think he was only trying to take advantage instead of it being an incredibly romantic moment.

“I will, I promise” Kate nodded. While she was feeling a little cold, she saw it as being her fault for dressing for fashion and not for practicality like she normally did, especially with the weather turning the way it had recently. Feeling cold was her own fault, and she had no intention of letting Neville suffer for her vanity.

When Neville leaned down to kiss her, it had certainly been unexpected, but was far from unappreciated by Kate. He was so handsome, and kind that it had really surprised her that he had wanted to go out with someone plain and bookish as her, and now she was stood kissing him in a park.

Tilting her head slightly, she rested a hand gently against his chest, while her other hand found its way to the back of his head. She wasn’t sure how long they were stood like that in the park, holding onto each other gently, but when the kiss naturally ended, Kate pulled her head back so she could see Neville’s face properly.

“I know you are a busy man, but do you reckon you might be able to find some time to see me again?” she asked hopefully.

Neville was never really all that attractive, and with his scars and occasional nerve damage showing, he felt even less so. But with Kate giving him her time and attention, someone so lovely made him feel the same in return.

One of Kate's hands was on his chest and Neville would swear she could feel his heart racing through the fabric of his suit. Eventually they would have to stop kissing - it was only their first date after all. So when they'd parted but still held onto one another, Neville studied her face and smiled at her question.

"I was about to ask you the same, and I believe we've already established that you'll be coming around to mine next week. But yes, definitely." All of this was happening because of a chance meeting and Neville couldn't help but marvel at how the way things work out sometimes when you're not expecting it.
