Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:char: katherine bundy, char: neville longbottom, location: the leaky cauldron, time: 2009 08

Who: Kate Bundy & Neville Longbottom.
When: Monday 28th August, Evening.
Where: Leaky Cauldron.
What: Kate needs a drink after a VERY long day.
Warnings: Maybe a bit of language.

Today had been an extraordinarily difficult and long day to say the least. What should have been a normal work day, had turned into a very long and complicated day after some underage wizards accidentally used magic in some woods near a Muggle Village. Had it have been near a city, then it would have been easy to play off as a group of youths that had let off fireworks. Being so close to a small quiet crime free village….well that made life a lot more difficult. Eventually, she had managed to convince local authorities that it was just some people filming an indie movie in the forest, that had been using special effects. After a few long hours, she managed to fill forms that made it look like that was the case all along, and the ‘film crew’ had even applied for all the correct permits, but the local council had forgotten to notify the residents.

Pushing open the door of the Leaky Cauldron, she made a bee line straight for the bar. While she was not the type to normally drink, after the day that she had, she was more than willing to make exceptions. Getting to the bar, she pulled up a stool and quickly ordered a large beer. When her beer arrived after what felt like an age, she took a large gulp of the beer before setting it down in front of her. Sighing deeply, she buried her head in her hands as she attempted to let go of the stresses of the day. She had been so wrapped up in trying to calm herself down, that she didn’t hear someone taking up the seat beside her.

It had been getting close to that time again - time to welcome back the students and bring in a fresh wave of first years. Neville had been looking forward to it and was also very concerned about Ginny - he was going to message her very soon as he had a delinquent birthday gift for his lovely friend.

His office was set up, lesson plans were...getting there, and he had to get Gryffindor house in order before everyone arrived. Neville needed a drink. So he went to the Leaky, not really expecting to see Hannah as she was busy herself getting the rooms ready for families.

With all of that, he sat at the bar and ordered a peach ale, sitting next to a witch who looked slightly familiar but, Neville being himself, couldn't place. "Been a day, yes?"

When Kate heard a voice beside her, she immediately straightened up a little and turned to the source of the voice. Of all the days that a handsome stranger would start up a conversation with her, of course it would the day she had worked a 14-hour day. Except he wasn’t a complete stranger, there was something….familiar about the gentleman sat beside he that she could not place.

“You could say that. Just some under age wizards who think they won’t get caught if they use magic during the summer holidays” she said, smiling sheepishly. “I am Kate by the way”

"That sounds exciting. You must work at the Ministry then?" Her features were definitely familiar but still, Neville was at a complete loss for placing her. He looked a wreck too, having been in the castle's greenhouses all day and then looking rather rumpled from his office chair.

"Kate...pleased to meet you, I'm Neville." Of course, being mannerly and all, he held out a hand for her in introduction and smiled kindly.

“Definitely exciting at times, at other points, it feels more like we act more as a get out of jail free card for witches and wizards who are…..rather on the careless side” she joked, running a hand over her hair, hoping she didn’t look to much of a mess.

When the gentleman in front of her introduced herself, she smiled brightly, finally being able to place him. “Nice to meet you Neville” she said shaking his hand. “I do believe we may have met already though, I was a friend of Hannah’s, in the year below you at Hogwarts”

"Sounds like a lot of eye-rolling and unnecessary paperwork. No wonder you're here and need a drink." Neville had friends in the Ministry, of course, so he had seen them on bad days, and worse days.

When Kate said she was a friend of Hannah's, he had remembered. "Right, you were a prefect as well, weren't you? I remember now." What Neville hadn't remembered was her being very pretty. He himself was nothing to look at while he was younger, and he had many many scars and was often covered in earth so, it wasn't like he was making a great first impression when he mirrored her movements, sweeping a hand through his hair and actually finding a leaf in there.

"Bloody hell...occupational hazard." he laughed lightly and unfortunately felt heat on his face which meant he'd turned a dark shade of pink. "Are you busier this time of year? Kids acting out before school starts and such?"

“Honestly, most days it is perfectly fine, and I do not mind a lot of the paperwork” her face turned a warm shade of pink, at her indirect admission of her geeky tendencies. “Yes, that’s right. Hannah was a very good friend of mine during that time. I do not think that I would have been half the prefect that I was, if I did not have her guidance”

“Do not worry, my father was a Herbologist. Those things have an awful habit of just getting everywhere, don’t they?” she offered, hoping that he would feel less embarrassed about it.

“Oh certainly, there this is our busiest time of year. Between kids that have been off all summer and have become restless, and newly qualified witches/wizards who conveniently forget the rules, it gets a little hectic” By that, she meant it got full on bat shit crazy, however she didn’t want to seem like she was continuously complaining.

"Some of the paperwork has to be entertaining though, especially when writing out reports." Neville gave Kate a lopsided smile and then nodded, knowing full well how Hannah tended to be. "I don't doubt it, she was always the consumate Hufflepuff and wanted to help everyone. I'm glad you two are friends."

"Oh was he?" Neville was always interested in hearing about others who enjoyed Herbology as much as he did. "I keep treading leaves and such into my Gran's home and I'll never hear the end of it."

"One last hurrah before they could get into a whole world of trouble at school I expect. At least it makes the day go by?" Neville sipped at his ale and turned on the bar stool to face her, wondering something. "I know you may not be able to tell me but, what was the most ridiculous scenario you've encountered this year? If you can tell me of course." Neville had his share of stories from school but he wanted to keep talking with her.

“Oh yes, trying to find new Ministry friendly ways of saying ‘he tried to magically increase his scrotal region’, never seems to get old” she blushed slightly, having realised what she had just told a stranger. “Sorry, that just seems to be the favourite among underage or just of age wizards”

“Yes, I think that is why my mother gave up at some point. They instead she built a second living room at the back of the house, so at least if he tracked stuff in, it would be confined largely to one room” she laughed.

“Oh it certainly does, there are some days were every time I look up, the clock seems to have moved at least an hour on”. When Neville turned in his seat to face her, she turned and did the same. Kate wasn’t brilliant at meeting new people, but here with Neville, the conversation seemed to flow so easily. “I may not be able to name names, but I can say the ministry has had to rescue a currently enrolled Hogwarts student from a forest where he was somehow both naked, upside down in a tree and had attracted the attention of a rather annoyed Grindylow” After a moment, she realised she had been rude, and not asked him about himself. “Sorry, I never asked, but what do you do for a living?”

"You'd be surprised how often that same thing happens at the castle." A bunch of hormonal teenagers learning magic, and then add peer pressure on top of that?? It was a common occurrence.

"Wow, an entire room? Your mother sounds like a determined woman." Neville laughed right along with Kate and wondered if his Gran had ever had the same thought.

"Oh... my, the poor kid. That must have been embarrassing. I did end up on a chandelier myself once though so I know how it feels." Mid-sip of his ale, Kate asked what he did for a living. "Oh, I'm the Herbology Professor at Hogwarts."

“Oh really? I just put it down to the whole summer of love thing. I must have missed a lot of this somehow when I was at school, because I simply do not remember that sort of thing going on”. Realising how that made her sound, she brought her hand to her face and blushed. “Oh Merlin, I sound old”

“You could certainly say that, my mother is the type of woman who once she sets her mind to something, she is hard to change. It is good though, it means you do not have to be in a rush to change when you get in from the Greenhouse. Though, she does despair during repotting season, as Dad just turns it into an overflow for his greenhouse” She couldn’t count the amount of times growing up, that she had seen her mother despair over the state of the room. She was pretty sure that is why she ended up by doing away with carpeting all together in that room and the hall, and ended up with wood and tiles everywhere.

“Oh really? I know it sounds weird, but part of me though that Professor Sprout would be there forever” Realising how rude she must have come across, she quickly corrected herself. “Not that I am sure you aren’t doing a fantastic job yourself, because I am sure you are…..Merlin I’ll just shut up about now” Taking a sip from her beer, Kate couldn’t help but mentally beat herself up for rambling on like a buffoon to Neville.

"Mmmm unfortunately not just an isolated incident. Give these kids any excuse to enhance themselves through magic for one reason or another, and they'll give it a go." Neville himself didn't remember that sort of thing happening either - except for the time Fred and George tried to make themselves older. "You don't sound old at all.

Neville understood what Kate's father had to endure through his profession but he could also empathize with her mother. Herbology was a messy business. "I try to keep everything at the school contained in the greenhouses as much as I can - sometimes it can't be helped."

Laughing genially, Neville inclined his head and agreed with her. "No it's fine, Kate - can I call you Kate? I was surprised myself, but she had encouraged me to pursue it and when I was ready, she retired." This woman opposite him took him by surprise and he wondered something but would wait to ask her.

“Is Madame Pomfrey still working there? If so, her or whoever has replaced her certainly must have their hands full. In fact, you must have your hands full trying to grow plants to go into the potions to sort the kiddies out” When Neville said that she didn’t sound old, she couldn’t help but look down at her drink for a moment and try and let her blush go down a little.

“No, but like you said, it always seems to get everywhere no matter how hard you try. My balcony at my flat is full of plants, and I still manage to track dirt into the front room, no matter how hard I try”

Kate tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, as she continued to talk to Neville. She wasn’t sure why she felt so nervous around him, but she was suddenly feeling very self-conscious. “Of course, you can. And that says a lot about how good you are with your job. I spent a lot of time in that Greenhouse with her growing up, and I know that she would not turn over her Greenhouse to just anyone”

"She is, and she's getting bossier than ever, but still able to heal just as well as when we were there getting bruised up." Neville knew that the Matron was really wanting to retire. She'd stayed her time and kept her eyes peeled for a suitable replacement. Neville also knew that Hannah's dream was to be the next Matron - though she still had two more years to go in her training.

"Oh really? What have you got growing?" If anyone gave Neville an inch to talking Herbology, he would take a yard.

"Thank you." He said cordially and watched her tuck a bit of hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry... oh, yes. I had actually been an Auror for a little while until it had gotten to be, well, not my thing. A friend of mine actually got the spark lit up again and well, I'm a Professor now and Pomona was very glad to hand it over to someone who would take good care." Neville would forever owe Nora a debt of thanks for renewing his passion and setting him back on the path.

“Bossier? I am not sure if that is possible? Do not get me wrong, I have a lot of time for the woman, but she is not someone that I would want to cross.” Kate shook her head at the thought of Matron being bossier then she ever had. She had only had the misfortune of getting on her wrong side once growing up, and it was not something that she ever did again.

“Oh nothing special, mainly flowers, some vegetables and few medicinal roots and herbs. I just cannot deal with being stuck inside all day at a desk, then all night at home in a flat without saying a little bit of green. It’s the hardest part of living in the city for me. What about you? Do you grow much yourself?” she asked attentively.

“An auror? Well that certainly is impressive” she responded without thinking. “Honestly though, I think given the choice between being an auror and working in a Greenhouse all day, then I honestly know which of the two that I would prefer to be doing”

"You would be surprised. She's lovely and a fantastic healer, but if you don't heed her advice, she gets...cranky." Neville laughed afterwards remembering when he'd accidentally stuck himself with a poisonous plant and not had the antidote at the ready. He got a right good scolding.

"That sounds like a good mix of things, considering you're....are you in a flat then?" Neville didn't think he could live without his garden. "I do. I have one at my family's home, a small greenhouse and an even more modest orchard. Most of the magical plants stay in the greenhouse though."

Wincing at the auror being impressive bit, he leaned in slightly and kept his voice down. "It's all very... boring, to be honest. And a lot more paperwork than one would expect. It wasn't me. But that doesn't say that it wouldn't be right for someone else." Merlin, he was talking a lot - he didn't know if it was the drink or the company.

“Yes, it’s closer to the Ministry. I did try the whole commute thing for a while, but it was just draining. There aren’t exactly many house shares in London, that come with a garden, so I figured it made for a decent compromise if I could carry on growing plants and bring a bit of green to the city” When Neville spoke of his garden, she could not help but feel incredibly envious. While her little balcony helped bring her a little bit of peace, she missed being able to sit out in a garden when the weather was nice. “OH you are so lucky, that sounds so nice. I cannot wait for the day until I can have a small greenhouse somewhere”

“Oh, I can imagine, if there is one thing that I have learnt from my time in the Ministry, if anything is worth doing, it is worth doing in triplicate and filed never to be seen again” she joked awkwardly.

Kate knew she was not the best person in the world at meeting new people, but conversation with Neville came a lot easier then she was normally used to. “So I imagine at this time of year you must be run off your feet, getting school ready for the kids return?”

"It must be nice to come home to with all the concrete and stone in London. I understand a lot of flats don't even have a small balcony." Neville felt badly for her - someone who wanted a garden so badly and here he was going on about the one he had at home. He was just about to offer to have her come by and take a tour, but he imagined that would be out of the ordinary for someone she'd just met. "I hope it's sooner than you think."

He had to laugh then, things at the Ministry hadn't changed. "Heaven forbid the staples are crooked or you forget to dot an 'i'." Neville was overexaggerating of course, but he knew what it was like - meticulous.

"I have been, yes. That's why I'm here, having a well deserved drink. I've set up my office again, gotten the greenhouses and classroom in order, sent letters to my new prefects. It's all done." Neville had neglected to mention that he was also Head of House for Gryffindor, but he assumed Kate could surmise as much with his last task. "It's a bit of a zoo when everything starts, but it settles - I cannot wait for that day to come." He smiled into his glass of ale and set it down again. "Is it busy for you right now?"

“I know it’s dreadfully sad, but sometimes it’s the best part of my day. Nothing quite beats sitting out there with a Cup of tea and a good book” she winced realising how she must have sounded. “I love my job, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a struggle being stuck all day inside sometimes” When he made the comment about her getting her garden sooner then planned, she sighed longingly. “Me too, I suppose as long as wherever I am it’s connected to the Floo Network I can live anywhere”

When Neville joked apart the ministries meticulous nature, a grin crossed her face. Leaning close to him, she dropped the volume of her voice as if telling him some great secret. “That’s all a fireable offence now, I mean literally, fired by teams of hit wizards” she joked shaking her head.

“That much be satisfying, to know you are all ready go to for the school year” she offered encouragingly. “Prefects? Do not tell me you are head of year too? If so, that is all very impressive!” When the conversation turned to her, she shrugged "Yiu know how the Ministry is, there isn't really a quiet period"

"It's not sad at all. If I ever need a quiet moment during the day at the castle, I'll just sit in the greenhouse." They both seemed to have a lot in common and Neville was having a good time - he didn't usually get on with people he didn't know. Sometimes they were put off by his scars, or had heard what he had done during the war and just shied away. "I do have quarters at the school, but I usually head home on weekends. You're lucky you can floo to and from work."

Neville knew she was pulling his leg, of course, but he played along nonetheless. "What? They've done away with hanging people up by their thumbs? Well, things have changed...a bit."

"It is, considering I'm usually late for pretty much everything. I started very early this summer." He was taking a sip and nodding when she commented about the prefects. "I am, Head of Gryffindor House. With McGonagall as Headmistress, she couldn't very well be Head of House so...she chose me." Neville was always, persistently, still trying to come to terms with everyone's faith in him. "You're right. It wasn't that long ago that I was there. Hopefully it's steady and manageable for you though. Nothing like going from quiet to screaming busy."

“Oh, I bet that is wonderful” she sighed wistfully. “It must be so weird though, with it being so quiet during the holidays. I remember spending a few holidays there when I was at school, and it just seemed such a different place” It was strange, but until they had started talking about their old school, she had not realised how much she had missed the place. Despite the dark cloud that hung over her last few years, it had been a place of wonder and innocence, that had held many happy memories. “I know, I keep toying with the idea of moving away from London, but I just wouldn’t know where to go”

Kate cracked a wide smile at their banter, and took a sip from her beer before responding to him. “Well it was starting to cost them a small fortune in plasters and bandages afterwards, so they figured it was just easier to kill people. Less mess, less paperwork” she laughed, enjoying the easy rapport that she was enjoying with him.

“Wait….Neville, as in Neville Longbottom? I remember you now from school” she beamed at him, feeling herself foolish for not recognising him sooner. “You probably do not remember it, but you helped me with Herbology when I was in my fourth year. I was struggling with how to harvest some Fluxweed, and Professor Sprout had you show me the best way of doing it after class one day” There was obviously the other thing to do with school that she had not mentioned, but she figured he must have been bored being known for that. “McGonagall is a very wise woman, I am sure that she would not have made you Head of House, if she did not truly believe you were the best for the role”
