Victory Road, the wizarding world's most fashionable district, has a new feather in its cap. After weeks of anticipation, The Carnival opened with a splash last Friday.
The owner, Aloysius Darling, said, "Victory Road was the obvious spot to me, really. It's central to the wizarding community around here, there are places nearby to stay if needed, and there's no one filling this niche."
Tucked away at the end of Victory Road, the new club drew in a diverse mix of clientele for its first masquerade. Despite the masks, Quidditch players, writers and musicians could all be spotted checking out the newest hotspot. The Carnival is larger on the inside than it appears from the street but the dim lighting is pitched just right to create a feeling of intimacy rather than seediness. It's not a ploy to make the decor look more expensive either - just take a seat in one of the booths and luxe is the word that comes to mind.
Darling went on to add that his vision for the new club is to "supply a good time to the magical folk around here, as much as possible. Everyone needs a place to let their hair down, so to speak. The Carnival is it."
The staff are creative souls, brewing up new cocktails and treats for the patrons. Their drinks are a feast for the eyes, often brightly-coloured and with the perfect garnishes to set them off. The Blood Orange and Ginger Margarita comes highly recommended and goes down very nicely indeed.
So is the masquerade a taste of things to come? "Oh, definitely, my little ink slinger!" Darling agreed. "I plan to host many themes that might interest pretty much anyone. And the masquerade was such a smashing success that I'll likely use it again, perhaps monthly."
The Carnival won't be everyone's cup of tea, but nor should it be. It brings something new to the centre of wizarding London, something that complements the established V-Bar and Leaky Cauldron. It's been a while since a business as exciting as this has opened up on Victory Road.
Our verdict? Go for the drinks, stay for the music.
