It was a usual Wednesday afternoon at the Flume home. Ambrosius was busy in the kitchen whipping something up, chocolate could be heard bubbling on the stove as he shouted at it to calm down. There was even a mess of what looked like purple slime dripping from the corner of the counter, where it fell to the floor it was exploding. Zahara had walked promptly by that entire mess when she had come in and straight to her mother, who was seated in the living room with one of her gardening magazines. She was also ignoring the commotion that was in the kitchen, the shouts were getting louder though there was no real urgency to any of it so they assumed that he had it all under control. While she may have come over because her father had sworn he had an emergency, she wasn’t up for dealing with the mess that was in the kitchen today. She was exhausted.
Zahara was just telling Jane all about her new assistant manager, Ruby was fantastic. The woman could multitask better than anyone she had met. She was so proud of her choice in assistant manager, she had been gloating since she had hired the woman. Their conversation however was cut short as Ambrosius came into the room, wiping his hands on an old stained apron that looked like it had never seen the inside of a washing machine.
“Mrs. Blishwick came by earlier,” He announced to the room, Zahara assumed it was just to her. She figured her mother already knew, as she had been home at the time their guest had come by. “She was telling us about how she was thrilled to see that you at the gala last month.” His eyes twinkled as he watched his daughter’s face, it had gone from completely uninterested to a wonderful shade of red that he didn’t see as often anymore. He missed that look on his daughter. He even gave a chuckle as he recognized that horrified expression on her face, she had been caught red handed and there was no way out. He still had one last piece of information to stun her with, but he wanted to give her a moment to hang herself.
“Did she?” Came a meek little voice, bright hazel eyes were focused on a spot just to the left of her father’s head. She knew there wasn’t a chance in hades that the nosey busy body Mrs. Blishwick hadn’t mentioned her date. She had walked directly into a trap and she knew it, she didn’t want to overshare though. Maybe she hadn’t been able to recognize just who Zahara come with, maybe she could still save face and at least give them a name to the mystery gentleman.
All hopes of that were dashed however when her father spoke again, “She did, she said that you looked absolutely beautiful on the arm of one of the Montgomery boys.” Ambrosius gave a chuckle then, he knew Persephone and his daughter were close friends, just as he knew that she was close with the youngest Montgomery boy. He however didn’t know which one his daughter was dating at the moment.
Her face felt on fire as she heard her father’s words, a groan even slipping from her. From beside her Jane was laughing softly, though her eyes on her gardening magazine again as if she had been reading the entire time. She wasn’t going to play their little game and be pulled between them, she knew her daughter well enough to know that whenever she didn’t want to tell Ambrosius something she would whine for her mother to tell him to leave her alone. She was just as curious as her husband, she had so hoped that things would have worked out with Kevin when he had been around just after the holidays. She hadn’t seen or heard from the man since though, she had taken that to mean Zahara had finally ended things there. She wanted to see her daughter married though before she passed, she knew her daughter still had so many years ahead of her. Entire lifetimes that Jane would miss out on, Jane was running out of time. She hoped though to see her daughter married and happy before then, maybe even with a few grandchildren. Wouldn’t that be nice?
Jane’s attention was pulled from her thoughts when she heard her daughter let out a whine, “Stop that.” She chided her daughter, lightly tapping her leg with her magazine that was now rolled up in her hand. “You’re not a child anymore, you don’t need to whine.”
Zahara rolled her eyes as her mother chastised her, she was officially trapped by the two of them. Jane wasn’t about to dig her out of this one. “Alright, alright.” She held up two hands, as if in surrender. “I’ll talk! Just don’t burn the kitchen down while I’m doing it.” She motioned towards the kitchen where another loud pop came just moments before Ambrosius went scurrying in to shut it all down.
“I heard he’s handsome.” Jane whispered to her daughter, giving her a playful smile as she set her magazine down on the coffee table in front of them. “She said you didn’t stop smiling the entire night.” It was clear where Zahara got her love for gossip from, Jane looked just as excited as Zahara did as she nodded her head quickly. “He tends to do that.” Zahara admitted in a soft voice, which made Jane’s eyes grow wider a moment before she sat back with a satisfied little smile. Her daughter was happy, maybe there was hope.
As Ambrosius came back in the room, his apron had been hung up and the noises from the kitchen had stopped. Zahara let out a sigh as she waited for him to sit down, she had no idea where to even start. “Well, you know Perse? Hyperion is her older brother…” She reached a hand up to pick at a loose thread on the pants she was wearing, though her eyes slid between her parents. She had never told them about someone like this before, someone she thought she might actually marry down the line.
“He works as an auror.” Zahara caught her father’s face, she could see the worry plain as day. He could never hide his emotions well. “Don’t worry, Pop. He already gave me all the talks about responsible wand ownership and we practice not only defensive spells but he’s making sure I know how to handle myself in hand to hand, if I had to.” Which really sounded like someone might kidnap her tomorrow but she knew her father would feel better knowing that she was taking Hyperion’s job seriously. She knew she wasn’t known for being sensible about danger.
“We’ve been together for just a few months,” She didn’t think it mattered that the number was at almost exactly two. “We love each other,” She bit her lower lip then, she wasn’t entirely sure if she wanted to share the rest of this information with them. She didn’t want their hopes up too high, she didn’t want them falling in love with him, only for him to walk away. She didn’t think that was going to happen though, while he may have always sounded like it was a joke… There was something about the way he looked at her when he would say it, something that made her think he was serious. That was just as deep in this as she was.
“He plays the drums, he loves watching me sing, he’s funny and adventurous..” She knew she had to slip it in, she was hoping they might not notice, “I think I’m going to marry him one day. For our first date he took me ziplining through the forest, it was fantastic. He even made dinner for just the two of us. Now with Nancy pregnant, he’s even put up a few cat trees and things around his house. He likes when I bring her with me when I come, he welcomes the both of us in his home.” She was smiling then, a bright warm smile that her parents had not seen before.
Ambrosius had caught every word, his eyes were twinkling as he watched his daughter. She had found someone, that was fantastic. From what Mrs. Blishwick had said the Montgomery boy had only had eyes for Zahara. Ambrosius had been worried that his daughter would end up with one of those punks she had dated in her teens, she always seemed to be back on their couch in tears when they showed their true colors.
“Well, when do we get to meet him?” Ambrosius asked with an expectant smile on his face. He watched as Zahara’s eyes grew wider and she floundered to find her words, clearly she hadn’t been intending to do that anytime soon. “So then it’s set, we’ll have the two of you over for dinner on the 25th?” He asked his daughter, who just nodded her head. Her eye roll was not missed by her father.
“I need to get back to the shop, I’ve blown through my lunch hour. Did you really need help, old man?” Zahara asked as she stood from the couch, her hands on her hips as if she were scolding Amrbosius. Her father just chuckled at her, while her mother snickered from beside her on the couch. “Of course he just used that as an excuse to get you here,” Jane told her daughter, giving her a sympatric smile. She hadn’t even warned her. Though this wasn’t the first, or the last, that Ambrosius would use that trick on her. She always fell for it.
Zahara gave another eye roll, this one aimed directly at her father. “Well, now that you both know all about my boyfriend.. I’m going back to work.” Zahara gave her mother a quick hug, before she moved across the living room to give her father a hug as well. Just as he embraced her he said, “Don’t forget,” to which Zahara finished for him, “to be here on the 25th, I know I know.” She groaned at him before she pulled away. “I promise, I won’t flake. I want you two to meet him.” Which was scary on its own.
She apparated then, back to her office at Honeydukes on Victory Road. Safe from the questions for now. She knew they would love Hyperion already, he charmed everyone he met. She was more worried about if it didn’t work out. As she had the thought, she shook her head. “He wants to be my first and last.” She said to her empty office, reassuring herself that her fear was ridiculous. This wasn’t going to be a mess.
