What: Coop gives Gen a gift.
Warnings: None
These morning runs were becoming something that he looked forward to. It was absolutely ridiculous but he looked forward to them because it was time that he got to spend with Gen, alone. They got to just be themselves and not have to worry about siblings, friends, exes, or work. They got to just exist together and he couldn’t get enough. She seemed to cloud his every thought when they weren’t together, it had taken him almost an entire week before he had told Hyperion about any of it. That wasn’t like him at all but he wanted to spend his free time with her. He had missed her so much in the past few months that he barely knew what to do with himself now that she was back in his life. The hardest part about all of it was that he was doing his best to not rush things. He wanted to throw caution to the wind but he knew that wasn’t what Gen wanted. It was for that reason that he was doing his best to not rush things, to not push too hard. He didn’t want to lose her again.
It had been before his shift at the Leaky earlier in the week, he had walked by the window and it had caught his eye. He had been on his phone at the time and it had still jumped out at him. He had made a point to pop in and pick it up before his shift, he had barely been on time to work. The bird necklace was absolutely perfect for Gen and he couldn’t resist. He knew it might be pushing a little too hard but he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold on to the gift until they were officially back together. He had never been able to hold gifts for more than a few days, so the fact that it had been slipped into his pocket just before he had apparated to their meeting spot was no surprise.
The run this morning had been just like the rest. They had run until they felt like bursting, laughing and joking with each other. Coop even tried to cheat a few times, nudging her hips with his or pretending to trip her. As they reached the end, he did just as he had been all week long, he stalled. He was still breathing heavy, resting his elbows on his knees a moment. “I’ve been walking to work lately, I saw something that reminded me of you.”
As much as Genevieve generally hated mornings, these morning runs with Coop were quickly becoming her favorite part of the day. Perhaps it was because it was the only real time she'd spent with him since that drunken night when she'd returned from Australia, though she didn't really think that night counted, as they'd not done anything. They still hadn't done anything, which was as frustrating as it was relieving.
But it had been almost two weeks of nearly daily runs, and he'd been respectful of her request to take things slow, which she found surprising but also made it more difficult for her to stick to her own rules she'd imposed on them both. It was her determination to make sure they would be able to deal with their issues that kept her from throwing caution to the wind and being with him fully again.
Running she could do, though, and she did. Her legs ached with exertion and her chest rose and fell quickly as they slowed at the end of their route. "Have you? And what is it?" she asked curiously. There were all sorts of things on his route to work that could have reminded him of her, she thought.
“Well, I was going by this one shop? It’s called uh.. Undie Takers? They had a lot of large boxes, could fit a body in them!” His eyebrows jumped comically. “I saw this one and it was just perfect for you.” Cooper stepped up to her then, having slipped the box from his pocket while he had been making up the name of the shop he had stopped at. He was holding it up for her, a small blue box that held the necklace that he had picked up for her.
Cooper was nervous, he had never in his life been so nervous about Gen. He wanted her to love the gift though, he didn’t want her to be mad that he was moving a little too fast. He had a lot of things that he wanted, but he knew what mattered was what she wanted. If she didn’t want him, then it didn’t matter a lick if he believed she was his soulmate. She had to believe it too, he thought that she might. He wanted to ask and probe at those questions but he wasn’t willing to push too hard.
Despite the six months he'd been out of her life, Gen could still tell when he was being an absolutely goof, and this was definitely one of those times. "Uh huh, I'm sure," she said dryly at his insistence that he'd found a box perfect for her. She was about to make a quip about not putting her in boxes but then he was right there and there was that little blue box in his hand.
Gen was slightly hesitant as she reached out to take the box from him. "This better not be a ring," she told him, narrowing her eyes at him briefly, though her lips were trying to hide a smile. She lifted the lid of the box and then couldn't hold back the smile anymore. Oh, it was so pretty and delicate and she was definitely seeing it as a symbol of her being his little bird again, even if they weren't technically back together yet. "It's perfect, thank you, Coop," she murmured.
She hesitated briefly again before stepping closer to him. "Don't move," she warned him before leaning up on her toes to brush a kiss against his cheek, hoping he wasn't going to push things by turning his head at the last second, which she had little doubt he would have done if she'd not warned him not to move.
He was grinning a bit like an idiot when she took the box, he hadn’t been lying! He really had found the perfect box for her, it just happened to have the perfect necklace inside of it. He chuckled when she told him it better not be a ring. “I’d be down on one knee if it were, I do things right or not at all.” Which... was likely the last thing he needed to be saying just then, especially since the proposal had been so large and public that it had such a falling out. The tabloids had it for weeks after, that had hurt most. Having to see the headlines long after she had moved out, it had killed him to see them.
He had gotten trapped in his own thoughts and had almost missed her telling him to not move. He didn’t turn his head to steal a kiss, he did however move both sweaty arms to slip around her waist easily and in one quick motion squeezed her to his sweaty chest in a hug, laughing before he released her. It was only then that he leaned in and pressed a kiss to the corner of her lips. “You’re welcome,” he whispered as he pulled back, a sheepish smile gracing those lips. “I don’t listen well, you know that.”
There was that kick of emotion again fluttering in her stomach at those words. Of course he would be down on one knee, but he wasn't, so she didn't have to worry about him doing something absolutely insane and far too rushed - this time. She knew there was no guarantee for next time, though. Even though they'd still not dealt with their issues yet, that was feeling like a less scary and overwhelming possibility. Regardless, she opted not to comment on it - it wouldn't do them any good right now.
Gen couldn't help but laugh when he didn't follow instructions, but at least he hadn't tried to steal a kiss. Her own arms went around him, not caring at all about the sweat, as she was more than a little sweaty, too. It reminded her of all the times they'd ended their morning runs together with a shower, often paired with more than a little fooling around. God, she missed that. And that reminder had her stepping back, biting her lip. That would definitely be too fast. "I do know that. You're le pire," she teased lightly.
Cooper just grinned at her, nodding his head at her words. “You know I am, you like it though. I think that says more about you.” His smile just got bigger, somehow more cocky if that was even possible. He liked that knowledge, that she still loved him. While he had regretted at the time, and for a few days after when he was under the impression that she was just stringing him along, he was so glad he had asked. He was glad that he knew, he had yet to say it in person though. He had said it in text so many times, he had yet to the guts to say it to her face.
He swayed a bit on the spot, he knew they had to go. They had reached the end of the run, but he didn’t want to go yet. He wanted to take her home. Hell, if his body wasn’t screaming at him to rest he would keep running just to spend more time with her.
Oh, without a doubt it said a lot about her. And that damn smile of his made her want to slip close and kiss him proper, but she couldn't do that. She had a feeling he was going to do a lot of things like this to push and tempt her without actually forcing himself on her. Quin might not see much of the Slytherin traits in him, but Coop had ambition in spades, and she knew there was little he would let get in the way of his goal. To be that goal was simultaneous exciting and terrifying.
It was time to go, she knew, but she hesitated still, not quite ready to leave him yet. "Will you be coming to ZJ's open mic night tonight?" she asked, finding the prospect thrilling and nerve-wracking. It would be the first time they'd really be in public together, at least here at home, since the breakup.
Cooper lit up when she asked if he was coming to that open mic thing, his head nodding. “Definitely. Hyperion had mentioned it, I was debating going. I’ve got the night off, since it was my first week. I’m not going to be up to snuff for the weekend just yet.” He’d need to drop Hyperion a line as well, let him know that he was coming. He wondered if this meant anything, the fact that she was asking if he was going.
It was then an idea struck him, “Can I walk you home after?” He didn’t know why he wanted to but it seemed like a good idea. “I’ll even promise to go home afterwards, I won’t try to stick around.” He held up his hand. “I swear.”
The way his whole demeanor seemed to liven set the butterflies off in her stomach again. Damn him! He was wearing her down, and she knew it. Hopefully he didn't realize it quite yet, though, because she really wanted to try her best to not go there with him until she had some serious reassurances. And she simply didn't yet. "You'll get there," she said confidently. He would probably be a fantastic bartender, being as attractive and personable as he was.
Her first reaction was to laugh, rolling her eyes. "I live in Scotland," she pointed out. Oh, she knew that he could still escort her home, but that wasn't what he'd said. She looked at him skeptically for a long moment before sighing and shaking her head. "I don't know, Coop. Let's just see how tonight goes?" Because having him escort her home after they were drinking and having a good time with friends at a bar seemed dangerous to her.
Cooper nodded his head, he was hoping to change her mind. He had all night, he wasn't going to worry about it yet. He just nodded again, grinning a bit. "Let's get going, I've got to shower and choose my best outfit. My boyfriend's going to be there." He gave her a giddy school smile that caused his face to scrunch up.
Gen couldn't help laughing at the mention of his boyfriend, rolling her eyes again. And then, because she really wanted to kiss him before saying good bye, she took a step back and smiled at him. "I'll see you tonight," she promised, slipping her wand out of a hidden holster on her leg so she could apparate home.
"You can count on it, little bird." He waved to her then a moment before he was pulling his own wand from it's pocket and apparating to the flat in London. He was excited for tonight, though not to see Hyperion. He did grab his phone from the counter and pulled up Hyperion's text, he wanted to fill him in.
