Phone Call: Sharing the Good News
Who: Coop and Gen
When: Sat/Sun June 17/18 (just past midnight) [back-dated]
What: Gen calls Coop instead of texting to tell him about her sister's pregnancy because she wants to hear his reaction.
Warnings: Always assume some language
Public/Private: Private
In her excitement, Gen hadn't even thought about what time it was or what Coop might be doing, that he had a new job and would probably not be available to talk on the phone just then. Eloise had given permission to tell people, and the first person she thought of was Coop. It had been such an amazing week, and all they'd done was run together in the mornings. They hadn't talked excessively, they hadn't kissed, they'd just run. And yet, her heart felt lighter, happier for it, for having him back in her life, though she was trying very hard to not get too far ahead of herself with him. No matter how much she loved him, and she could admit now that it was an awful lot, they still had problems to work through.
Still, she found his name and pressed call, bringing her phone to her ear. It wasn't until it went to his voicemail that she frowned and ended the call, glancing at the time. Right, the Leaky. She flipped to her messages instead, pouting a little bit, and hesitated over his name. She could just text him to tell him, but she really wanted to hear his voice when he reacted to the news.
And so, she couldn't bring herself to do it. She called him again, and this time when it went to voicemail, she left him a message. "Hello mon chou, please call me when you get a break or once you're off. Nothing's wrong! I just have some news, and I didn't want to text it. I'll talk to you soon. Love you!" And when she hung up this time, she was smiling wide, biting her lower lip. Oh, Coop was going to be thrilled, she just knew it, and she couldn't wait to tell him.
Coop hadn't felt the vibrations from the first call, but he had from the second. Though they were busy for a Saturday so all he could do was stare at the message from Gen, not able to listen to it until he was heading home after his shift. He had decided to walk since it was a nice night. He pulled his phone out then, listening ti the message first thing, before pressing 2 on his speed dial and listening to it ring.
No one in the de Blacas d'Aulps family had gone to bed yet, though it was just past midnight. Someone had broke out the wine and they'd found a bottle of sparkling cider for Eloise so she wouldn't feel left out, and Gen was definitely feeling a bit of a buzz by the time her phone rang with Coop's name lighting her screen. "Mon amour!" she greeted him in delight, laughing as she stood up and broke away from the rest of her family where they sat on the patio. "You'll never guess the news I got tonight!" She didn't hesitate, though, didn't give him a chance to guess. "Eloise is pregnant!"
He gave that deep chuckle when she just kept talking, not even letting him get a word in. That was fine by him, and when he heard her declare her good news, he let out a howl. He hadn't even moved the phone, just threw his head back and let out a howl. "Really?!" He even gave a punch with his free hand to the sky. "That's fucking amazing, Gen! Give them a hug from me, Yeah?"
That response, loud though it was in her ear, was precisely why she'd wanted to tell him over the phone and not through a text. "Isn't it though?! Oui, I will! Of course!" She sighed then, a ridiculously happy sound. "I wish you were here celebrating with us," she admitted, though it was probably the wine talking, even if it was true.
That ridiculous smile that seemed only for Gen graced his lips when he heard her whispered admission. "I wish I was too." Was so much softer than his previous outburst. He chuckled again, "They finally did it, they've got to be so happy. We should take them out sometime, maybe farther down the pregnancy line. When she's ridiculously pregnant and the baby is just kicking her arse. It'll be fun."
Cautiously optimistic, my arse, Gen thought with a mental laugh. She'd said that to Quin, but she knew she was already in over her head again. She couldn't help it. But Coop didn't need to know that yet. "They are! Thomas keeps giving her these lovey-dovey gooey eyes. They're adorable!" Her mouth had gone a bit dry at the mention of 'we' but she couldn't disagree. "We will," she promised about taking them out sometime. "And they'll love it."
"Of course he is!" Cooper chuckled and shook his head, "How are you? Excited at the prospect of a niece or nephew? Hyperion is over the moon about his sister having twins. You'd think he was having kids." He chuckled again, "I always wonder if Em will make me an uncle one day. I've never asked how she felt about having some of her own."
Gen nodded even though he couldn't see her. "Oui, I can't wait!" And Eloise would be an amazing mum. "Well, babies are exciting, I can't blame Hyperion for being excited." At the mention of Em, she hesitated, not sure what his twin sister thought of her now, though they'd gotten along well enough before the rejected proposal. "Oh. Umm. How is she, anyway?"
"They are, it's twins. I can't wait to see them. Is it ridiculous to say I want twins? I know we only lasted so long because Aly was special and could keep up. I know as a normal wizard I would be snowed under but... I would love it." He had gone on a mini rant, he had had a few drinks after his shift. He chuckled. "Em is good. I told you about the chef of 10 years? I have met him. Realized it recently, think it's the American bloke. I think his name is David? She's been supportive of me though lately. We did dinner last Sunday. She listened to my mixed up feelings.. she's been good. Very mama bear.. that realizes her cub is going to do as he wants."
She'd been just about to commiserate with his excitement to see the babies when he dropped that bit about wanting twins in the conversation. She found herself breathless, her throat dry and emotion making her eyes sting a little bit, though it wasn't any one emotion, it was a combination of far too many emotions. "Twins would be brilliant," she breathed when he finally paused and chuckled, her tone colored with some of that emotion. "Well, I suppose I can't fault her for that. You're all each other had left of your family until Wishes came back," she pointed out softly, gently. It wasn't to stir up the memories of losing his parents, but to give credit to his sister's protectiveness over him.
She said twins would be brilliant!! He felt his heart soar for a moment, he was so happy he had gone to France for the first time. He wanted to talk more about it but he knew now wasn't the time. He also knew this talk of Em wouldn't go anywhere good. "He goes by Aly, it's weird being an adult. I was thinking maybe in a couple weeks I could introduce you to him? He wants to meet you."
Gen chuckled softly at that admission - weird being an adult, indeed. She could imagine how strange it must be to be faced with the man who'd helped raise him after so many years. "I'd like that," she answered. Hadn't she told him a couple of times that she hoped to get to meet the man?
Cooper nodded his head, his nerves were getting the better of him. He felt like a nervous teen talking to his crush on the phone. "I also was talking to Hyperion, I thought it might be a good idea if we went out with him and that letter." Beaters Bounty, he could have brained her. "Chaperoned trip or something." He said with a chuckle.
That suggestion had her pulling her lower lip between her teeth again, hesitating, though she wasn't entirely sure why. "That could be fun," she said first. "Out where, though?" Chaperoned trip, indeed. Although there might be some logic to doing something like that. It would be easier, she thought, to keep things casual and friendly for now without as much opportunity for them to muddle things up with the physical chemistry they'd had from the very start.
"I don't know, she seems to be into karaoke and you did miss my epic solo... There's a lot of options though, we can leave it up to them? We could even think about going someplace, like a carnival or some activity." Coop gave another chuckle and the sounds of him arriving at his flat could be heard. Doors opening and closing, the tv being turned on for noise. "I may as well just say it, I'm willing to do anything as an excuse to spend time with you. I've missed you, I don't want to miss another moment." He knew it was likely too much but he had already given himself away a bit with how many options he was trying to come up with, he was a big too eager.
Gen chuckled softly at the mention of his epic solo, though she wasn't sure that sort of thing would be right for what they had in mind. "I've missed you too, Coop," she admitted not for the first time. "I'm happy to do any of those things, but..." She hesitated, hoping that what she was about to say wasn't going to upset him or anything. "...I think it would be best if we stuck to Muggle venues for a bit. I just want to avoid speculation for a while," she explained. After how much she'd been in the Birdie's column lately, she really didn't want this in it.
It warmed his heard to hear that she missed him too. "Like I said, I'll go anywhere you want. I can see if they know any good muggle venues we could go to? Whenever you'd be ready to, that is. I'm not rushing you, am I?"
The questions had her pulling her lip between her teeth again, trying to figure out how to answer it. "Maybe a little bit?" she finally answered, going for honesty. "But you're excited - I understand. It feels strange to be going so slow to me too," she admitted. And considering how quickly things had gone for them the first time, that was understandable. "But necessary, too," she added, almost as an afterthought.
Coop gave a soft laugh, "Well, you tell me when I have gone too far. I don't want to do that. It's why I thought a chaperoned date was a good idea, no bad ideas about bringing you home."
Gen rolled her eyes, though she was still smiling. "Oh please, you don't have to pretend you won't be thinking about doing that," she teased him lightly. And she knew she would be thinking about it, too. "But I will tell you, I promise," she assured him, because she didn't want to muck things up by not being clear in her desires and expectations with him.
His smile could be heard in his voice. "I will be thinking about it but Hyperion is a fantastic help. He will be sure I go home and not to your home. He made sure I didn't drunk text you after that night. He can be helpful."
"You haven't seen my home... yet," she said conversationally, though she winced a moment later, knowing that wasn't actually helping anything. "Though I think drunk texting could be allowed again now." There was just a small hint of mischief in her tone, but she couldn't help it - drunk texting with him had always been so fun.
I will though, he thought with a smirk, "No, I haven't yet." He gave another chuckle, "is it allowed now? I will keep that in mind for the next time we go out." He was certain that he had plans with Hyperion soon, they tended to find any excuse.
She couldn't help but think about how her cottage had more rooms than the flat had, which was just more surfaces to christen. "Oui, it's allowed," she confirmed, feeling a definitely flutter in her belly again. "I'll be back tomorrow night, so... same time, same place for our run on Monday?"
"I would really love that, if we could." Cooper wanted to ask to get a bite to eat after, but he didn't want to push too far just yet. "I have to get to bed soon, I don't want to hang up but I have to get in early for the brunch rush."
She didn't want to admit that she was already used to their morning runs again as they weren't supposed to be rushing into things again. "All right, I'll see you Monday morning then. Good night, Coop." She bit her lip briefly before adding, "Je t'aime."
That large goofy smile graced his features at hearing her saying that. "I love you too, little bird. I can't wait to see you on Monday."
