RP: A Not-As-Fun Morning After
Who: Genevieve and Addi (NPC)
When: Monday, May 15, 2009 [back-dated]
Where: Gen's house
What: Gen catches Addi up on how terribly things went wrong, and a certain ex's texts interrupt.
Warnings: Language.
Last night had been an utter disappointment in so many ways, but at least Gen hadn’t splinched herself when she’d apparated home in a huff. She’d drank a bit of Sober Up and then taken a nearly scalding shower to try to defuse some of the frustration coursing through her, climbing into bed afterward in the hopes of putting the night behind her. As much as she loved that Oliver had done the right thing, she couldn’t help feeling completely down about the whole thing.
He was damn near perfect, in her opinion, though she knew she didn’t know him very well on a personal level yet. Yet. Right. As if his handler was going to let her get close to him again. The timing had been all wrong, though, and she couldn’t help wondering if another opportunity would open up between them, preferably when there wasn’t a girlfriend in the picture.
Sleep had eluded her most of the night to the point that when she got up the next morning, she felt awful. Coffee, she needed coffee. While the pot was brewing, she cooked up a bit of toast, feeling that was all her stomach would be able to handle this morning, despite the work the Sober Up had done to circumvent her inevitable hangover.
When Adelaide opened the door to her sister’s house late the next morning, she was exhausted but relaxed and sated and very pleased with how the night had gone. She carried her heels in her hand and yawned as she went inside. The heels were tossed carelessly next to the couch before she headed toward the kitchen, though she was stopped in her tracks as she caught sight of her sister sitting at the table with a cup of coffee in front of her. “Jesus Christ, Vieve! What are you doing up?” Or home, for that matter! She’d so hoped things would go well with Oliver.
Gen looked up at Addi’s surprised voice, hands wrapped around her mug and the plate from her toast long since pushed away. “Couldn’t sleep,” she answered first. She sighed and looked down at her mug hating the way her thoughts swirled around in a sad fog in her head.
“Did it go that poorly?” Addi asked, slipping to sit in the chair across from Gen’s at the table. “Don’t tell me he didn’t like the dress - that’s just not possible!”
Her smile was more of a grimace at that, and Gen shook her head. “No, he definitely liked the dress. His PR handler, on the other hand…” Gen winced at the memory of the night before. She was still furious with the way Jenn had treated Oliver, and though her own intense response to it had surprised her, she couldn’t be anything but proud of what she’d said just before leaving. Oliver deserved better, in her opinion, than to be treated like some prop or mascot or disobedient puppy. He was brilliant, and her crush on him had only been strengthened by her interactions with him last night.
Addi’s nose wrinkled, and she stood up again to go get a mug for herself and bringing the pot of coffee back with her to top off Gen’s cup as well. “Ugh, I didn’t even think there would be PR people around at the after party.”
“Yes, well, I should have. I really should have known better. Puddlemere - they’re not really like any of the other teams in the league. They’re… more corporate.” Gen’s nose was turned up as well at that, and she sighed again, shaking her head. She didn’t think she could handle playing for a team quite that obsessively controlling. She loved quidditch, but she also had always stood firm on having her personal life separate from her team.
“What happened?”
“Well, I met him at V-Bar for drinks, like we agreed, and it was going really well at first. All those little signs of interest, you know?” She blew out a breath and lifted her hand to run it through her hair only to realize that it was up. “And so I thought, hey, maybe he and Romilda broke up but they just haven’t publicized it - well, I wanted to think that. But Jenn, PR --” Her phone buzzed then, and Gen glanced at the screen, her eyes going wide.
“What, what is it?” Addi asked, tempted to lean over the table and snag the phone herself to read whatever message had put that look on her sister’s face and drained some of the color from it, too.
“It’s Coop,” Gen squeaked out, feeling utterly embarrassed at the crack in her voice. Good god, she hadn’t heard from him in six months! Not since she’d turned down his proposal and moved out.
“Coop? Cooper Vipond? Oh my god, Vieve! What did he say?” She’d never really understood why Gen had turned down the hunky Beater’s proposal, but it wasn’t really her place to decide who her sister married, so she’d supported her decision. Still, she couldn’t help but wonder if this was fate or something - Gen’s ex messaging her the morning after things with her crush didn’t work out?
There was no way Gen was going to admit that her cheeks had gone from pale to pink in the matter of moments after opening the message from Cooper. “That I’m brilliant. And just a general appreciation for the game yesterday.” No big deal, right? Sure. She set the phone back down - no way was she dealing with that can of worms just yet! “But anyway, Jenn was clearly not pleased with my presence there. She kept making comments implying that I had no right to be around them because I wasn’t on their team.” Gen rolled her eyes, clearly finding that mentality utterly ridiculous. The season was over, and why shouldn’t she have celebrated with them? Sure, they’d lost, but the Magpies had still put on a fantastic show! That was worth celebrating, in her opinion.
Was she really…? Oh god, she really was! Adelaide leaned over the table and grabbed the phone with the speed and determination of a Seeker (a rookie Seeker, perhaps, but one nevertheless). Gen squeaked in protest, but Addi ignored her. “There!” she exclaimed proudly, shoving the phone back across the table. “It’s not nice to ignore people. Now, add something else and give the guy some credit for being brave enough to reach out to you again.”
“So pushy,” Gen grumbled, though she picked up the phone with clear hesitation. When she saw the simple ‘Thank you’ her sister had sent, however, she relaxed slightly. She typed out a few more things, deleting them each time before finally settling on something she felt sounded enough like her normal self that Coop wouldn’t be able to tell what a weird place her mind was just then.
Once Gen had finished sending her response, Addi decided she wanted to hear more about last night. “So Jenn the PR bitch wasn't happy with you. So what?”
“So, she took the first opportunity to sweep Oliver away somewhere else - to a fancy nightclub no less.” And Addi knew her well enough to be able to guess just how well that worked to keep her and Oliver apart.
Sure enough, Addi laughed at that, her blue eyes bright with the thoughts running through her mind. Oh, if Gen hadn't gone to that club, she would be shocked! “Please tell me you showed up and Jenn had an aneurysm!”
Genevieve narrowed her eyes at her sister at that and shook her head. “Please, Ad, I don't like the woman either, but that doesn't mean I want anything to happen to her.” Even if she might have had the fleeting desire to do something herself last night. “She didn't spot us for a while. I was dancing with some guy and--” Her phone beeped again, and she glanced at it, not willing to admit that the fact that it was Cooper again had her flustered at all. “--and then I saw Oliver up in a VIP section and waved him down.”
Addi wanted to steal the phone and do what her sister was avoiding doing again, but she also wanted to hear the rest of the story, so she let it slide for now. “You danced, didn’t you?” she asked, smirking knowingly.
Leave it to her little sister to get right to the point of it, though Gen couldn’t help smiling even as she bit her lower lip at the memory. “Mmhmm. God, he’s a great dancer - all those muscles!” She sighed in a way that would ordinarily make her feel ridiculous. She was not lovesick over Oliver Wood. It was just a silly crush that she would probably do well to shake off sooner rather than later so she didn’t open herself up to more rejection. But there was no denying she’d loved running her hands over those muscles or how much she wanted to do so again.
Laughing, Addi clapped her hands together, though she could sense they were nearing a turn in the story. “Please tell me he kissed you!” She just couldn’t help but hope for all the sparks to culminate into fireworks, and she was like this with almost everyone. Love was great and all, but lust was where the real fun was.
Gen’s nose wrinkled, and she shook her head. “No, but he wanted to. I could tell. But instead he pulled back and did the right thing. Because, like I told you before, he has a girlfriend.” She shrugged then, a half-hearted attempt at brushing it off as no big deal, but she was definitely feeling put out.
At that, Addi’s expression mirrored Gen’s. “Ugh, what a tease. But does he really care about this girlfriend if he was celebrating like that with you? I mean… I don’t know, it just seems like maybe things aren’t so great there. And come on, Vee, look at you! He’d be lucky to have you, and if there are cracks in that relationship, why shouldn’t you swoop in and show him what he’s missing?” It made perfect sense to Addi, who had no qualms with encroaching on others ‘territory’ and stealing a man (or woman) away from someone else if she really wanted them. But then, she also had no qualms with sharing, so she didn’t really see it as stealing.
“That’s not me, and you know it. I wouldn’t want to be the reason he leaves her, and I definitely wouldn’t have wanted him to cheat on her with me! That’s no way to start a relationship, and he’s someone I would want to see if I could have something serious with.” Because she did want marriage and babies and all of that - she just hadn’t wanted it with Coop. And then she remembered the text message and flipped her phone open. She typed out a couple texts back and then took a drink of her coffee.
Addi waited her sister out, knowing that there was more brewing under the surface of those spoken thoughts than Gen wanted to let on. She watched as she texted Cooper (presumably) back and then received a reply soon after, staying unusually quiet as they went back and forth a few more times. And when Gen let out a sharp sound of amusement, she jumped slightly and then chuckled under her breath. “What? What did he say?”
“Nothing,” Gen answered, shaking her head.
“Oh really? Il semble ressembler à quelque chose.” And Addi’s expression was challenging, as if daring her sister to deny it again.
Genevieve considered her sister for a long moment before finally giving in. “Apparently I gave him a heart attack doing that broom swap.” And not only him. She had no doubt people were going to be talking about that one for a while yet.
“This is the first time you’ve really talked to him since you moved out, isn’t it?” Addi asked. When Gen nodded, she pushed on. “Well, from an outsider looking in, I’d say your face is screaming ‘unfinished business.’ Do you think he wants to give it another go?” Her eyes widened then as a thought occurred to her. “Or, wait! You guys never did have break-up sex, did you? Maybe he was so turned on by your broom swap that he wants you to give his broom another ride?”
“Mon dieu, Adelaide!” Though Gen could admit to herself that she could definitely see Cooper wanting that. The question then would be, did she want that? Her knee-jerk response would be a resounding no. Cooper was her past, and that was where he should stay. But then, she also knew that the sex had always been where they were most in sync. Whatever faults the man had had (and oh, she definitely remembered them), he’d always been fantastic in bed. Or against a wall. Or on --
“You’re thinking about it, aren’t you?” Addi chimed in, laughing as if it were the most hilarious thing in the world. “And since Oliver is unavailable, why shouldn’t you?” But then, Addi wasn’t one to be satisfied with only one person in her life. Fortunately, she’d been lucky in finding Roberto, and their arrangement worked out very well for both of them.
Groaning, Gen brought her hands up to cover her face. “I don’t want to be thinking about it! And even if Oliver is unavailable right now, that doesn’t mean I want to go back to Coop. There’s a reason we broke up!” And no matter how good the sex had been, she had to remember the reasons they weren’t together anymore.
“I’m not talking about dating him again, jeeze Vee, give me more credit than that. I’m just saying, why not have another tumble with him, for old time’s sake?” She would do it, if she were in her sister’s shoes.
“Because I don’t want to marry him-”
“Don’t you listen? Putain, Vieve, I’m not talking about love or dating or marriage!”
“Yes, but I don’t want to give him false hope! That would be cruel.” And after he’d proposed publicly and she’d turned him down, she really didn’t think it would be fair of her to hurt him more. No matter how great the sex would be.
Addi rolled her eyes and finished her coffee before standing up again. “I’m going to shower. Why don’t you just give him a chance? You never know, maybe he’s learned some things since you broke up, evolved a bit…” She just wanted to see her oldest sister happy, and to Addi’s way of thinking, fantastic sex was the quickest way to happiness.
“Somehow I doubt that. Go, go…” Gen waved her off and went back to her phone, replying to Coop and just still trying to play it cool and casual. God, she felt like a teenager again! It was ridiculous. And she went back and forth with him, amused by his thoughts on her sister possibly moving to London, flustered by the little comments here and there that reminded her of just how well he knew her, how close they’d been over the year and a half they’d lived together… She missed that, even if she knew she didn’t want it with him.
By the time Adelaide came back out, she was just wrapping up the conversation with him, promising to think about meeting up with him, trying for a friendship, which she really wasn’t sure she wanted to do. Why open that can of worms if she didn’t have to? She set her phone on the table and stood up to deal with the coffee pot and mugs.
“Hey Gen?” Addi’s voice called out from the dining room. “When are you coming home for a visit?”
“Sunday,” Gen answered automatically. A moment later, she spun around and dashed to the frame separating kitchen from dining room to see her phone in Addi’s hand. “What are you doing?”
Addi smirked. “Just letting Coop know when you’ll be in Provence. You can thank me later.” She laughed and set the phone back on the table.
“Adelaide!” Gen groaned, rubbing a hand over her forehead. Oh how she wished she hadn’t told her sister it was Coop who had messaged her! Her phone beeped again and she hurried to it, not wanting Addi to meddle anymore than she already had. Just after reading his final message, her phone went off again, and she paled as she read the message.
“What, what’s wrong?” Addi asked in concern, noticing the difference in her sister’s expression and knowing that wasn’t her man troubles look.
“I have to go in. Apparently, my PR team needs to see me, and they are not happy.” Great. Just what she needed. Usually they didn’t do more to her than a disgruntled reminder to toe the line if she got a little too wild with things, but this hadn’t been just getting a little too wild, and she knew it. Drinking and dancing and flirting with Oliver publicly like that had done more than blur the line, it had crossed over it.
“Good luck,” Addi said, her expression scrunched up in sympathy.
“Thanks. I have a feeling I’ll need it.” And with one more sigh, Gen went to get dressed so she could face the music.
Oh joy.
