What: Introducing: Niall Rui Bai Chang Quigley
Warnings: Mushy Finbar
So small. He was so small. Finbar marveled at how someone so small could have such a magnificent pull, could tether his entire being to this wonder that he and Cho had created. Cho – he glanced over at where she was asleep in her bed – had been amazing. It had been scary and rough, of course, but she had done it, and the three of them had spent a couple of hours just looking at each other, looking at this new life, so small, so fragile, and still so strong that he had somehow made his way to Cho’s breast and started suckling. It was astonishing and Finbar had fallen instantly in love with this tiny, dark-haired marvel.
Both his son and Cho were asleep now, a well-deserved rest after several long, hard, and stressful hours of fear, pain, and joy. He was tired, too, but he couldn’t sleep. Not right now. When Cho had started dosing off, a Medi-Witch had offered to take the baby to a quiet place where he could sleep in peace, but Fin had refused. This was their child – his child – and the last time he had held a newborn, ready to be a father, it hadn’t been his after all. He was not letting this child out of his sight until they were back home, and even then… he wouldn’t count on it happening all that easily.
So instead, Finbar held the little boy, letting him sleep peacefully as he kept watch.
A small grunt followed by a deep breath had him look down at the beautiful face of his sleeping child. “You okay there, little man?” he said softly and leaned back in his chair so he could put his feet up and relax. “There. That’s better, isn’t it? Yeah, you just keep sleeping. S’been a long day already, hasn’t it? Kept mam and me up for a long time.” He couldn’t stop smiling. “We’ve been waiting for you. Seems like forever, but it also seems like just yesterday we found out you were there. Mam was so sick. Well, she thought she was sick, but it was you, wasn’t it? And we waited and waited and waited and now you’re here with us.” Gently, oh so gently, he ran his finger over the incredibly soft hair. “We’re supposed to teach you to be a good person, and you’re supposed to show us it’s not easy… That’s what they say, but you’re not like that. I know that. You’re perfect already. So please don’t give us too much grief. Mam especially. You have the best mam, believe me. Just like you, she’s perfect, and she so smart and beautiful and she can do anything she puts her mind to, just like you.”
He chuckled softly. “What do you have a mind to do, sweetheart?” he mused. “You’re strong, we knew that even before today with the way you’ve been pounding at mam, so maybe you’ll be a Beater like me? A Seeker like mam?” His thumb brushed over the tiny fingers closed around the tiny thumb into a tiny fist. “A planner like mam? Or a merchant like your uncle Aílfrid? Aílfrid can’t wait to meet you. Says it’s been too long since he’s held a newborn, but we both that’s rubbish, don’t we? We’re Quigleys, so there’s always a newborn around, and right now, that’s you. But they’ll have to wait, because right now, me and mam are getting to know you. I’m sure you’ve already figured both of us out, because you’re smart like that, aren’t you? Of course, you are. You’re just like mam that way, and she’s so smart and clever and so beautiful, just like you.”
For a long time he just sat there, listening to the soft breathing of his child matching the rise and fall of his back under his hand. “Thank you for choosing us, sweetheart,” he whispered, and pressed a kiss to the top of Niall’s tiny warm head.
