Daddy's Home
Hannah had been bustling about all evening, trying to get everything in order. It was particularly busy at the Leaky all evening and she wondered what the hell was going on. It wasn’t like she was complaining, she’d seen a lot of her friends in the last few hours and it was pleasing her to no end. That and she was looking forward to spending the rest of the night with Ernie at his flat. Megan knew so she was helping along with Liesl. She’d run her hands through her hair, sent an MM to Ernie and started to set out around the bar when she’d seen Seamus with that odd man Ash and they were walking towards her. She was confused and taken aback at first, but smiled coyly afterwards. “I didn’t know you two knew each other.” Seamus smiled his classic Finnigan smile as he nestled into the bar, “We just robbed a muggle bank - he’s my muggle scapegoat.” A hand patted Ash firmly on the back, “He gets a bigger cut - but the contracts a win-win, really.” Seamus’ tone was playful… obviously in jest. David had to hand it to Seamus - his insides were going crazy knowing that Hannah would probably be very upset by the end of the night, and yet Seamus was able to make him smile. “I was the lookout… and the getaway car.” he tried to add to the joke and smirked slightly at his daughter. “And where’s my cut for granting asylum to two nefarious criminals such as yourselves? Really.” She shook her head, mostly at Seamus because he was the one she usually joked with. She was still iffy about Ash. Something about his presence… “Can I get you two anything before I head out?” Ash seemed to look anxious after she’d asked but didn’t think much of it. Seamus scratched his forehead and scrunched his nose at both the accusation of her cut and the flip his stomach made at hearing Hannah had plans. There was a slight pause in his wit - and it was obvious. Clearing his throat the Gryffindor immediately forced the start of the curve, “Actually… we were both hoping we could talk to you about something. Something… Kind of important.” “Oh? Well… I can stay for a bit.” Hannah was notoriously early for things, and going to Ernie’s flat, she tended to be extra early, so she had some time. “What’s going on?” Her stomach turned only a touch, but enough where she was nervous. It was a good thing she had Teddy’s potion coursing through her system. David watched her apprehensively as he heard Seamus speak. No turning back now. Reaching into his jacket, he pulled out the vial that held the memory of the day he had to leave Hannah and her mother and held it out towards her. “It’s about this… this memory.” he swallowed hard and courage shouldn’t be so hard to come by for him, but it had been. “It’s for you to look at if you need to … after.” “After...what?” Hannah looked from Ash to Seamus and then to the vial that she had taken into her hand. “Eh,” Seamus made a noise and tilted his head toward David. “Maybe we chat somewhere else--” David sat up straight and looked directly into the identical pair of eyes he shared with Hannah. “After I tell you the whole story, about why I left you and your mother. Hannah… my real name is David.” Hannah was utterly confused and missed the last half of Ash’s sentence due to a loud ruckus at a table nearby and Liesl shouting at them in German to keep it down. The noise was an invitation for Seamus to slip to David, “I still think she should watch the memory first…” He looked slightly disappointed at how everything was spilling out. Shaking her head, she came around the bar, her brow furrowed in confusion. “Sorry I missed that last bit...the whole story…” she rubbed her head and found an empty table, unsure of whether she’d heard him correctly, she’d heard the name David and her head spun. “Let’s sit down yeah? I need a sit down.” She was still holding the vial while she seated herself, feeling extremely uneasy. David had felt a sort of wave of reprieve wash over him. Seamus had given him a look and he only shrugged in apology, following Hannah to the small table where they all sat down for a second try. Seamus was forcefully pulled into the booth when he motioned he’d be at the bar. “You need to know the truth…” He could practically feel Seamus’ glance and a disapproving shake of his head and David knew he was absolutely correct, but he still went ahead, like he often would on a mission and landed himself in hot water. He needed to explain and thought that if he’d stopped, or paused, he’d never have a chance to get it all out.“That memory holds the real reason why your father left...why I left.” Seamus tried again, this time verbally, “I can wait at the bar if you two want….” he motioned between them, “... time to talk.” “Yes…” David said… “No…” Hannah said at the same time. “Sit your arse down…” Hannah said tersely, although she was only half-aware of what was going on. Her heart was racing and the feeling of a panic attack - a feeling she hadn’t had in a long time - was creeping up on her. “...excuse me, why you left?” The flood of a dream she’d had not long ago washed over her vision, making lights flash in the corners of her eyes and she sat gaping at this man Ash. “Yes… why I left. My name isn’t Ash, it’s David… Abbott.” David spoke hurriedly, it’s what he did when he was facing a difficult situation, although his voice remained calm in the hurry. “I’m your father and I need to tell you the whole truth, not just what Fi… your mother has told you.” Seamus settled into his seat, his arms crossed as he tried to remain as small and quiet as possible. His teeth clenched in disapproval of how things were being spilled out. “So… you’re my father then?” Hannah seethed, shaking, she took up the same posture as Seamus and glanced back and forth between the two men. “The man who left after I showed signs of magic, accused my mother… my now deceased mother, murdered mother, who raised me on her own… of keeping things from you? You’re that man?” The rage bubbled white-hot in Hannah’s veins, and she was visibly shaking and trying terribly hard to remain fierce - as she would when anyone started trouble in her pub. This was much harder. David ducked his head and listened to Hannah, remembering the horrible pain when he’d learned of Fiona’s murder, weeks after it had happened. Of course she was angry, of course she probably wouldn’t want to see him ever again. With what she had been told her whole life, it wouldn’t be surprising. And to have to carry on with no family, Hannah had shouldered more than any young girl should ever have to. “No, I’m not that man. I… your mother was angry with me and that’s why she told you I left because you were both witches. Hannah, I don’t know if this will make any sense to you, but I was an MI5 operative for the British Government.” David watched his daughter laugh incredulously and shake her head. “It’s the truth. The day you showed signs of magic, I was sent off on a mission, one that only I could do and a lot of people would have died if I didn’t carry it out to completion.” The nerve of this man! Hannah couldn’t believe it. “You expect me to believe all of this UTTER SHITE??!!” Her voice travelled through the pub and she didn’t give a rat’s arse who heard. “First, you tell me my mother lied to me, my whole life, then you’re some fucking super spy assassin ...I…” It did explain how he must have found her, but Hannah wouldn’t give him an inch. She then turned her blazing eyes to Seamus. “You’re uncharacteristically quiet. Did you know?” The room was blurred around her and she fidgeted nervously with the vial in her palm, not even realizing she still held it. David knew where this was going and tried to diffuse anything before it got out of control. As Seamus sat up to answer, David interrupted, “Hannah… this is all on me, please, I asked Seamus to be here.” Hannah’s eyes darted back to David and she’d never been so bloody angry in her entire life. The crash of her hand when she’d struck the table had echoed through the pub, making all sounds of conversation stop and she was fully aware now, that they had an audience. “YOU...do NOT have ANY RIGHT.. to tell me how to FEEL!!! About any of this!” She leaned forward just then, breathing through her nose and hot tears falling down her face. “You gave up any right to being in my life the second you left...under orders from some muggle in a suit, if that’s even true...and now my mother’s dead and you’re calling her a liar.” Her magic was starting to get out of control like it would any time her anxiety was taking over - a nearby pint glass cracked into a dozen pieces and the lights in the Leaky flickered for a split second. David watched her, let her speak and it was all too familiar to him. The fury was so similar to Fiona’s, but with his own intensity. He wasn’t expecting a warm welcome back hug, or even for her to be calm...he hadn’t expected this much anger though. David was feeling very guilty for dragging Seamus into this, he didn’t deserve her scorn when he was only trying to make this easier for father and daughter. Hannah’s gaze turned from the unflinching, unspeaking man who claimed he was her father, to the man who was supposed to be her friend. “You knew… and you didn’t warn me?” The look of absolute hurt was written all over her face. Hannah was done...she rose from her seat and went to stalk off toward the floo. “Great fuckin’ job, mate,” Seamus offered David an irate glance before leaving the table after Hannah. He’d pictured this going very differently before the muggle improvised from the plan. David had a stony yet remorseful look on his face. He stood from his seat and ran a hand through his thinning, blond hair. “I’m sorry...I should’ve done this on my own.” Even though things looked bleak for the both of them, from what David had seen, Hannah was a very forgiving person...he still had hope, and she still had the vial! He stayed close so he could help Seamus if he needed it - he owed the young man so much and it pained David that he dragged him into all of this and had obviously bulldozed and mucked it up. Seamus stopped once he noticed David had an intention of following, “Mate… tact. Give me a second, yeah?” He backed away a few steps before turning his attention to Hannah. He’d reached out to the woman, “Hannah! Wait…” he jumped between her and her escape route. “Can I just…. Say something before you hate me forever? Please?” “What? What can you possibly have to say?” Hannah’s face crumpled and she shook her head. She wanted desperately to leave and her phone buzzed in her pocket, not for the first time. “Did you know?” “I’ve been profiling him… “ Seamus confessed. “He was hanging about, watching you all weird for weeks. Megan couldn't get him to confess so I… investigated and-” He let out a sigh to try and start over. “Look- you have every right to be ticked… furious, even…. But… you should watch that when you're ready…” he pointed at the vial in her hand. “You’ll regret it if you don’t.” “I know that! I knew he was watching me…and I’m beyond furious,” she said through clenched teeth, her full-on panic attack making her more irrational, not focussing on the right details. She held the vial and really noticed its presence, but only for a moment. “Fine….I will, but not tonight. You have to tell me though...how long have you known that he was my father?” “How is that question even relevant other than to give you more ammunition to go off the hinges?” Seamus answered rhetorically with a slight irritation in his voice. “Point is, I vetted him for you to make sure he wasn't a whack job. And whether you like it or not he’s not a bad guy. He’s been looking out for you in ways that speak volumes to how much he cares.” “It’s relevant because you should have warned me...so I wouldn’t go off the hinges!” And why the fuck was Seamus all pissy?? Her world just got turned upside down and shaken up and he was irritated? “Skulking around the Leaky and watching me hardly seems helpful. I’ve had many years to get used to taking care of myself.” Her gaze shot over to the man in question, watching them both. She felt ambushed and she knew it wasn’t Seamus’ fault but she felt it all the same. “Taking care of yourself and having people who care about are two different things, Han.” Seamus offered, “Be angry all you like but that doesn't change the fact that he’s your dad.” A glare shot his way. Of course she knew the difference. “I have plenty of people who care about me and were there for me when I needed them. He didn’t even come back after Mum…” a fresh wave of angry tears flowed thinking about her mother. “Fine...so he’s my dad. Doesn’t mean I have to talk to him or anything.” She was still hurt and angry, and all she wanted to do was leave. Her phone buzzed again and she realized that she was now very late and it made her urge to flee stronger. “I can’t be here...and I want him gone.” David stood stock still, terrified he’d fucked things up beyond repair when Hannah pushed past Seamus to regard him with sheer, cold anger. “You listen well…” she said coolly “...I’ll watch this, but on my terms, when I choose to.” She bit at her lip and her eyes widened, anger appearing once more. “If I even hear a whisper that you’ve set one toe into my pub before I’ve watched this...I swear to all the Gods, I’ll destroy it.” If this is what it took for Hannah to one day accept him as her father, to actually have a real relationship with her, David would take any kind of stipulations she’d name. “Done. I’ll wait to hear from you. Seamus has my mobile number.” He didn’t want to ire her wrath any more than he already had that night but he thought he should say something else. “He really was looking out for you...trying to protect you.” Hannah’s head was spinning still and her anxiety was making her head throb. “Fine.” She was beyond exasperated, stressed and upset. “Just… go now, please.” David didn’t hesitate, he only nodded at Hannah and approached Seamus. “I’m sorry. I know it didn’t go according to plan, and that was all my doing, but thank you.” and with that David headed out the doors to the Leaky and back to his flat. Hannah had turned to where Megan stood bewildered and she hugged her sister fiercely, giving her the gist of what had just happened, still shaking from the panic. “Meet me at Luna’s tomorrow would you? I’m late to meet Ernie…” just then her phone buzzed yet again “...and he’s probably worried. I love you, but I can’t be here tonight.” she gave Megan another squeeze and a kiss on the cheek before rubbing at her forehead nervously and walked over to face Seamus. “I’m sorry you got dragged here for all of this…” Just another thing that she was angry about, that her ‘father’ had used her friend that way. Hannah gave him a twitchy, half-hearted smile and looked him in the eye earnestly then, her mostly scattered attentions were on the floo the moment before and she was visibly shaking. “Thank you though, I mean it. It would have been worse if you weren’t here.” Seamus offered an apologetic and sad grin, “You can hate me for a few days, I give you permission.” He reached out to tap her elbow with his finger. With a weak smile, Hannah shook her head. “You’re very lucky that I can never seem to stay mad at you.” She had felt incredibly hurt in the moment she found out, but somewhere in her fog of shock she knew Seamus did, in fact, have her back. “I have to go.” Both because she was late and didn’t really want to be there anymore, so she gave Seamus a quick, shaky hug and disappeared in the floo. |
