She’d gone by the reserve to check on Septimus. She'd been so nervous and panicky ever since their problem the other day. Check up on the guys there, most of whom doted on her to some degree especially since the other day. Of course she knew she’d end up working for at least a few hours especially since a couple people were out sick. She knew Tim would be home again tonight - he was there every night lately- but her anxiety had demanded she come for him early.
Besides, oddly enough she loved working at the reserves, even though it did mean wearing trousers. It was probably the only time she wore them, and leather ones at that. She wore the entire set of leathers, every time, as Tim instructed, and they were charmed like everyone else’s to make her safe.
She also carried the small staff Tim had had made that contained a couple of illusions to help her out, sicne she couldn’t cast on her own. Not that most of the dragons gave her any trouble, though. The alpha had accepted her from the very start and they got along rather well, considering how tiny she was compared to the very large dragon.
The staff also was very good for whacking the dangerously overzealous across the muzzle, though she’d only had to do that twice to yearlings who didn’t know better and got much too close. Tim always told her what she should do and she did it, and he would never have her do anything that would actually endanger her. She trusted this innately, though she knew all the situations weren’t necessarily safe. But the dragons didn’t scare her, not like people did.
Today she was going to separate two young males so they could both be checked out. One had been looking off, but there was no way to check either of them without first separating them. She went to their large enclosure and made certain the two ports were ready, and then went through the process of going inside. “Hup hup, boys, you remember me,” she said in an easy, melodic voice that most of the dragons found quite enchanting. She often sang to them when she worked here. “Come along now, we’re going to go to our pens today! You know you get all sorts of special treats when you go to them.”
She talked to them with an easy confidence that was rarely present when she was with people, especially in the last weeks. She tapped her staff twice on the ground and then pointed it, sending a small flurry of illusion whirling in front of one male, so she could start leading him to the opening for his small, private enclosure.
