Summary: Severus does something surprising... he wakes up
Severus' eyes flew open and one hand went up to clutch at his throat as he gasped for air. But instead of blood and a gaping wound, his hand encountered only slick scars. He sat up, his head swimming momentarily and looked around wildly. He frowned in confusion, trying to marry his memories with what he could see.
He had been in the Shrieking Shack, trying to distract the Dark Lord, trying to get away so that he could find Potter and give him the last vital pieces of information he needed to defeat the Dark Lord. He remembered the Dark Lord’s prattling about Albus’ wand and who was the master of it, he remembered Nagini’s attack, the pain, the blood, then Potter appearing in his vision. He didn’t know how or from where, only that Potter had been there. He would be able to complete his task. He remembered giving his memories to the boy then nothing. Blackness.
But this was not the Shrieking Shack. This was grass and trees and clear air. He rubbed his hand over the slick scars on his neck. How could he have gone from bleeding and dying to being here? Clearly some time had passed for the wounds to be nothing more than scars. Why did he not remember anything? Least of all, who had rescued him? And how? He had been convinced he was going to die.
He climbed to his feet, swaying for a moment as he looked around. There was a strange familiarity to this place but that didn’t matter for now. Now he needed answers. Needed to know if Potter had succeeded… or failed. He reached for his wand and snarled silently when he found it gone. What in Merlin’s name had happened? Who had his wand?
He drew in a deep breath and went completely still before apparating himself to the gates of Hogwarts. Apparating without a wand was something he’d mastered a while ago but it wasn’t something he did often. The scene around the gates told him nothing. All seemed as it should be. He wasn’t sure if that was reassuring or not.
He stalked up the path to the school, ignoring the odd weakness he felt in the wake of the apparition. There was nothing he could do about it and it felt like it was passing anyway. He didn’t slow as he neared the school even though if Potter had won, there was a chance things would... not be good for him.
He walked in to find the Entrance Hall empty except for a single woman who was apparently waiting for him. Again he wasn’t surprised. Obviously some time had passed and Minerva McGonagall wasn’t an unlikely choice for Headmistress, especially if Potter had, by some miracle, won. That would mean the wards would have informed her of the presence of a stranger coming up the path. What he had not expected was to see Minerva McGonagall go pale and wide-eyed as she stared at him, clutching at the tartan robes over her chest and looking for all the world as though she was about to faint.
"Severus?" she whispered, looking as though she was staring at a ghost and Severus was so nonplussed at seeing the usually unflappable Transfiguration Mistress look like that, that he was forced to look down at himself to ensure that he wasn’t a ghost
"Of course it’s me," he said impatiently as he closed the gap between them. "Minerva..."
He wasn’t sure if he was going to ask a question or attempt some sort of explanation when he was stopped by Minerva’s hand on his chest. He almost reeled back from that... she had never been an overly tactile woman any more than he was an overly tactile man... but the expression on her face made him stay where he was.
"Great Merlin," Minerva breathed, swallowing hard. "Severus... you’re alive!"
Severus went completely, utterly still. Her reactions were bringing some very unpleasant possibilities to mind, not the least of which was that if she was so utterly shocked to see him alive... had that blackness he remembered been his actual death?
Before he could voice any questions or make any pithy statements, she had grabbed his arm and was dragging him through the corridors of the school to her office.
"No! Not a word!" she said briskly when they got there. "I think we should do this only once."
With that statement she whirled around and made a quick floo call. Severus didn’t catch the name of the person she was calling and he scowled at that. The scowl only deepened when Minerva refused to answer any of his questions and only summoned a house elf to bring them tea.
It seemed he was going to have to wait for whoever it was she had called before he got answers... and confirmation of the answers he’d come up with for himself.
