It was a normal morning -- Dessie was still out with friends, and Ron was on the couch, curled up in a blanket, staring blankly at the television. He flipped through the channels boredly. This had been the majority of his existence ever since he'd been fired -- nearly a week ago, now. He still got up early and left in the mornings, when Dessie expected him to, and stayed out a couple hours until she was gone for her own job. He'd call the house to make sure she didn't answer before going home from wandering around the mall or park or wherever else.
Then he'd come home and watch TV, nap, or read.
It was around midnight when the film he'd been watching had first come on. It was one he thought he'd seen scenes of, before, but never the actual movie. One of those big heist films with big names in them.
Ron had always been a fan of thieves. The movies were cool -- who wouldn't want to climb through an airduct and cut a circle through a glass window? Ron's mother had always told him that stealing from people was unacceptable, but stealing from companies was different. And if that was so, stealing from casinos like the guys in the movie had to be even more justified. All those people did was take money from people, anyway! It was stealing so much as reclaiming, right?
Ron was practically on the edge of his seat as the heist in the film began. It was nearing 1:30 AM, and even though Ron would normally feel pretty damn tired by this point, sleep was the very last thing on his mind.
As the thieves in the film made away with all that money -- millions of dollars worth -- Ron felt his heart pounding in his chest.
It was so much! Dessie would love that kind of money. She already shopped enough to practically take care of that much in a year or so...
Biting back his lip, Ron shut the TV off and slumped back in his seat. Dessie and her spending habits were not something he wanted to think about. With his job over, they were going to hit bankruptcy soon. Ron wasn't even sure they could pay the rent, much less for fifteen new pairs of shoes Dessie was sure to bring home that week.
Why was it so easy for people in the movies to get money like that? Why couldn't it be that easy for him?
Wait a minute... why couldn't it be that easy for him!?
There had been master thieves in history before. Ron had remembered reading about them in school. There was one that stood out especially in his mind... a Frenchman from the turn-of-the-century...
The movies hadn't made up people, places, abilities, experiences like that up! They'd really happened to people! And if they could happen to anyone, Ron could make them happen to him!
He jumped up from the couch, excitement coursing through his body. Heists could be that hard. Even if Ron only had himself to count on, wouldn't that in the end just make things easier? He wouldn't have to rely on other people, and he wouldn't have to split the cash in the end...
He moved into the den, quickly, going to his desk. He would need to sketch out some plans for a costume. If he wanted to hide his identity, he would need to do like superheros in comic books and wear a mask.
A mask...
Ron was about the toss the newspaper onto the floor to give himself more drawing room when he noticed the headline on the front page.
"Priceless Jewel to be Held on Display in Los Angeles!"
The article went on to detail the transport of the jewel, as well as the security and estimated value. But what Ron was really interested in was the picture.
The jewel was huge -- a dark blue in color. It was absolutely gorgeous.
And soon, it would be his.
