Welcome to the Intermezzo Gallery, may I help you?
That’s what I’d likely say to you if you stepped into the art gallery where I work. It’s in Chicago, on Superior Street to be exact. I’ve been there for two years now, and it’s my first job out of college. I think the first six months had mainly been getting the coffee and cleaning the place, and then I graduated to answering the phone, processing orders, and checking customers’ credit. Sharon, my boss, is now letting me help plan the exhibitions and discussing art with customers, which has thankfully saved me from being bored out of my mind. I have a side job of modeling for one of the photographers, Alex von Trier, who I’m lucky to count among my good friends, and the big disadvantage about this promotion is that I’ve started to have to discuss myself. That is so bizarre and I’m having some difficulty adjusting to it. I keep hoping my parents don’t discover that anytime soon, since I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell them for the last year.
How’d I end up there? Oh, I was an Art History major at Ohio State University, and not an agricultural or equine science major like my parents would’ve preferred, I’m sure. They own a farm in southern Indiana and raise Arabian horses, and now that I’ve moved to Chicago, hardly get a chance to see them. If things don’t get too crazy around Labor Day and my truck will survive the trip, I’m planning to go visit them. Telling them about the modeling? Not so sure about that one.
Maybe when I’ve graduated to planning my own exhibitions, not as an assistant, I’ll tell them. But if I do, I’m a little wary of all the questions that’ll likely ensue. Like say, who Alex is, and what I’m doing in his photographs. They might wonder who Anne is too, but she’s my best friend and hand-holder during difficult times. She and Alex have made Chicago a city worth living in, and I’m not sure what I’d do without them.
Wow, guess I’ve got a long way to go before I’m truly comfortable in my own skin.
