Working Up the Nerve
Who: Alexius and Nolan
Where: The Wild Coyote
When: Monday Night - August 23
Nolan Burrows was a man who stood at 6'2", had a strong, muscular build and a smile that made most women weak at the knees. At 34, he owned his own construction company in Vegas, and had over a hundred employees. Each one he tried to meet at least once. Some would say that he was a family man, except, sadly, he'd never met anyone who he felt he could settle down with.
Once a month, Nolan liked to go to The Wild Coyote and have a few drinks with some of the construction crew. He told them that he wouldn't tolerate public drunkenness, but a good time was to be had by all. He laughed as he made his way over to the bar, intending to buy a round for the boys.
"What can I get ya?" Alexius asked when Nolan reached the bar as she wiped down the counter top with a damp rag. Was kind of slow at the moment, which was why the blond was doing a little bit of cleaning while she waited for things to pick up a bit.
Nolan smiled and set his tanned forearms on the edge of the bar, "Can I get a half a dozen beers, please?" He asked, forgetting to mention HOW he wanted them, or even what KIND of beer. He tended to forget those things when he was talking to her.
"Someone's got quite the thirst tonight." Alex commented with a smile before the blond turned to grab half a dozen bottles from the cooler. The man hadn't said if he wanted the beers in glasses or bottles, nor which brand, so Alex just took it upon herself to make that decision for him. Setting the bottles on the bar in front of him, Alexius gave him the total cost of the requested beers.
Fortunately, when it came to free beer, the guys didn't care what kind they got, luckily. "It's not all for me," he laughed and handed over the cash, along with a tip and thumbed over at the table behind him, where five other men were sitting. "Promise we'll be out of your hair in no time," he added, although honestly he'd rather stay.
"They should be the ones buying you a beer." Alex said glancing past Nolan to the table full of construction workers with a disapproving look. The blond had half a mind to refuse Nolan's money and march herself straight over to the table to deliver the beers herself and collect money from them for the drinks.
"No, no," he laughed and shook his head. "I know how much I pay 'em. I wouldn't ask that. A few drinks and a BBQ here and there are a show of good faith and appreciation of hard work, I find." Hm, he'd have to make Christmas plans, soon enough. Those events were always look forward to by employees. He smiled and bobbed his head appreciatively and took three beers in each hand. "I'll talk to you soon."
"I'll be here." Alex said before Nolan walked off with the beers. And she would. Alexius was to be stuck behind the bar for the next couple of hours as both her siblings had somehow managed to both take that night off. It was times like this that the blond was thankful they had a small wait staff employed at the bar.
An hour later, Nolan was back at the bar, having called cabs for his employees to get home to, since some of them had had far too much to be able to drive, and others... well, it was better to be safe than sorry, wasn't it? Luckily none of them were working tomorrow, so it wouldn't affect their work. He placed his elbow on the bar and his chin on his open palm as he watched Alex work. She could be... mesmerizing. "Can I have a light beer, please?" He asked politely. He hadn't drunk nearly as much as his employees, but... switching to a light beer might be the way to go for now.
"Since when do you drink light beer?" The blonde commented stopping in front of Nolan, crossing her arms as she set them on the bar top. He did have a light beer on those very few occasions when Nolan visited the bar, but the majority of the time Alexius had noted the guy ordered non light beers.
He gave her a very surprised grin, then. He hadn't expected that she'd remember something like that. "Well, I'd rather a light beer than make a fool of myself." Although, to be fair, that was something he constantly worried about when he came here. "I suppose I'll let you decide what I deserve," he added, since as a bartender, she'd know what was best for him, judging by his state.
A little bit of a wicked style grin curved briefly before Alex turned away from the guy keeping her comment to herself. "I suppose a draft won't hurt you any." The beer set down before the man when the blond returned.
He set a few bills down on the bar, letting her take the cash and tip before giving her a puzzled look. "Why'd you smile?" He asked. Sure, women tended to smile at him, but he usually guessed the intent behind it. He lifted the glass and took a small sip, licking the foam from his upper lip.
"What? A girl can't smile around you?" There was a light smirk from the blond as she collected the bills laid down on the bar. Alex wandered off momentarily then to ring Nolan's beer purchase into the register.
"Well sure," he replied in his native Texan accent. He took another sip of his beer and watched her work, doing a once-over of her body before realizing that fact and looking away embarrassedly. "It's just usually I'm able to figure out why."
"Is that what you're doing?" The question flowing when Alex stepped back over to the man. "Trying to figure me out there, Nolan." And without hesitation, and a grin curving, Alex eased the beer away from the Texan to allow herself a small drink of the alcoholic beverage.
He tilted his head slightly and gave her a cock-eyed look before smiling at her charmingly, "Trying and failing, I think," he admitted. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing. She had him captivated in a way that no one else was able to. He reached his hand out for his drink, "if you're so thirsty, why don't you sit down and join me?" Well, that was bold, wasn't it?
"Tanner!" The blond slid the beer back to the guy as she got the attention of one of the servers. "Need you to tend bar for a bit." Alex glanced back then to Nolan with a smile. "You chose the table." The hunter stated before moving off to get herself a beer and stepped out from behind the bar.
Nolan didn't expect that she'd agree to it, but he certainly wasn't going to back out now. He smiled again and stuffed his change back into his pocket, before picking up his drink and nodding to a far off corner, letting her get what she needed before leading the way steadily (as honestly, he really HADN'T drunk that much tonight). "Are you bored tonight, Alex?" He chuckled. It was funny how, even though they hadn't made formal introductions, that they knew each others names.
"Am I getting complaints about the company already?" Quirking a blond brow at the guy as she settled in at the table. It wasn't hard for the blond to learn the names of the regulars who frequented the Wild Coyote. It made the place a bit more friendly like when you could refer to a customer by name rather then 'dude' or 'mister'. And well, most folks knew the Moreaus who ran the place. Two sisters and one brother.
"No, no," he chuckled, ruffling a hand through his scraggy hair as he took a seat. "I just meant that usually you seem more busy than this, and thus, unable to sit with a regular," he explained.
... Dear God, shoot him now.
"You've never asked me before." Alex stated matter-of-factly. Sure she chatted it up with the regulars who came in and were waited on by her, but the woman had never taken any up on their offers for her to sit and have a drink with them. That was until now, and Alex couldn't believe that Nolan had actually worked up the nerve to invite her to have a drink with him.
"Well... no, I guess I hadn't before now. I suppose I didn't want to bother you," he smiled politely and took another sip of his beer. While that was true, he always thought she was a tad out of his league (although frankly, he had less experience with women more recently than he'd like).
"Never figured you for the shy type, Nolan." Alex in fact had taken the guy to be one who went after what he wanted, which had been why she always wondered why he didn't make any kind of move til now. There was a mutual attraction there, though the blond had been starting to doubt herself on just that. That it had only been one-sided.
"No, neither did I," he replied with an honest chuckle, blushing slightly as he took another sip of his beer. "Maybe that's just a side you bring out in me," he suggested.
The blond smiled back at him having never seen the construction worker blush before. "Maybe you'll take this as a lesson learned."
He grinned and then boldly said: "Maybe I'll take you out somewhere that isn't your place of business. ... If you'd be willing." Well, okay. So, a littler bolder than his usual not-so-bold, hm?
"I might just allow you to do that." She grinned back. Sitting there in the bar chatting with the man was nice, but if he was going to take her out on anything resembling a date The Wild Coyote definitely wasn't the place.
"Is there anywhere you might particularly like?" He replied, keeping to hypotheticals for now since it was kind of fun.
"Surprise me." She answered. Alex wasn't much for surprises, but in this instance the woman was making an exception. It would give her a chance to see what the guy was actually made of. If he'd take her someplace more along his preferences, or if he'd try taking her to someplace he was thinking she'd like going to.
Now, that was the tricky part. If he took her somewhere that he thought she might like, but in fact didn't, then the date would fall flat... but, maybe taking her somewhere that he liked would give her more insight on the kind of person he was. "Well, alright then. I think I can do that," he grinned.
"Alright then." Alex smiled. "Your mission has been accomplished." The blonde added with a lingering smile to the guy.
He'd actually fantasised about asking her out for quite a while now, but... it wasn't so much a self-esteem issue as that he really THOUGHT she wouldn't agree to it. Still. His heart felt lighter somehow. "Can I ... get your home number?"
Alexius could have simply written her number down on a piece of paper, but the blond knew how easily men lost things. So instead she reached for Nolan's hand, and what a strong, masculine hand it was, and with the pen she had wrote her number down across his palm. "Just so you don't lose it." She smiled still absently holding onto the guy's hand.
Nolan watched her, barely refraining from whimpering before nodding. Something tells me I won't be washing this hand anytime soon, he thought, glad that he didn't verbalise it out of fear of further embarrassment. "I wouldn't dream of it," he managed to say instead.
"Well, it's back to the trenches for me." Alexius finally let the man's hand drop from her light grasp to reach for her beer as she prepared for her departure. "You can come talk to me anytime, Nolan. Don't be shy about it." The blond giving the man a smile that could light up any room.
"O-okay," he replied, watching her stand. Why oh why did he lose the ability to do anything around her? He took a sip of his liquid courage and nodded, "Count on it."
"You're soooo adorable when you do that." Reaching over Alexius playfully pinched the man's cheek. "Your next beer is on the house." The blond stated before heading on off back to the bar.
He watched her walk away, tilting his head to one side briefly before he realised what he was doing and blushing. Hopefully next time he wouldn't make such a fool of himself, hm?
