Charlotte gave him a sidelong look when he took her hand, but she was too well bred to show her surprise. People didn't tend to touch her; Tracey was the one who liked physical contact, who demanded it. Charlotte was much more restrained that way, and tended to exude a cool aloofness that tended to make people think twice about touching her even if she wanted them to.
