Éponine knows that Marius doesn't want her at the barricades. It's the only reason he sent her on this fool's errand, delivering a letter to his beloved Cosette. There's no return note, just a few coins dropped deep into her pocket and she takes her time returning. She knows she should be there, be at his side, only he's sent her away and she doesn't quite know what to do. It rains and she's soaked and freezing, the clothes she wears are ill fitting; they're all too large for her and the coat has done nothing to keep her warm. It doesn't matter, though. She knows she's going to the barricade to die. She has nothing left to live for. Perhaps Marius will die at her side and they can be together forever. But no. No, she is going to die knowing that he lives. Because she wants him to be happy. |
