As soon as Seamus came to consciousness, he saw a figure standing over him and yelling. “Are you alright, mate?” He rubbed his eyes immediately and sat up swiftly, looking around. He appeared to be in someone’s backyard and it was a woman talking to him. Her hair was pulled back in a messy bun and she was wearing a plaid apron. It must have been her house and the back sliding door was opened from a kitchen. Hence the apron. “Is your wife okay?” He blinked at what she was saying and she shouted, “Your wife! She’s obviously pregnan’, is she alright?” she pointed beside him, where all he saw was the curve of a pregnant woman’s stomach and blonde hair splayed across the ground. “Daphne…” He said, getting to his knees and crawling over to her. He pulled her onto her back – since she had been lying on her stomach – and patted her cheek gently. “Come,” the woman said, “let’s getcha inside before it gets dark.” Seamus got to his feet and lifted the unconscious Daphne in his arms. His mind was whirling at miles per house. Her accent sounded like that of a drunk English person or an Australian person. Somehow he wanted to believe it was the former, but knew it had to be the latter. He carried Daphne inside the woman’s house and set her down on the guest bed. “How did th’two of you end up hea?” Seamus shrugged. “To tell you the truth, I honestly don’t know. She’s not my wife, though. She’s a close friend of mine. But how we got here is a complete mystery. I just thank you again for letting us stay here for a while.” |
