Inara sat up with a small groan. She disliked the feeling of being forced unconscious at the whims of others. It was one of her least favorite things about this place. She took a moment to blink against the bright lights and let her mind regain focus again. As her eyes adjusted and her brain caught up, she sucked in a sharp breath. Lights. They had electricity! She knew Kaylee’s generator had been useless during their prolonged darkness, and she assumed that neither Kaylee nor Mal would have asked Rachel to use her ability to give them light. Something else must have changed. Inara pushed herself up into a standing position from where she’d fallen on the floor during the blackout. She could feel a bruise forming on her hip. She must have landed on it when she’d gone unconscious. She didn’t dwell on it for long, however, as she quickly realized that the lights were not the only thing different. She’d been using one of the balconies for her room, and she could now see that the theatres was in almost pristine condition again. The seats were all clean and repaired. The chandeliers sparkled perfectly. The stage and curtains were immaculate. The whole place even smelled nice. Inara breathed in deeply and enjoyed the view for a moment. Even just for that moment, it was nice to be surrounded by something beautiful again. But she didn’t bask for long, as her caretaker instincts kicked in and she reminded herself to go check on Mal and Kaylee. She moved through the doorway of her balcony and out into the hallway. Mal was staying to her left, and Kaylee to her right. After a moment of hesitation, she moved to check on Kaylee first. “Kaylee?” She knocked on the door softly. “Mei mei? Are you in here?” |
