JoJo didn't like it here. The mermaid was really pretty and she had a lot of fun with Derek at the lake and with the big kids when they weren't trying to run ahead where she couldn't keep up. Carl was lots of fun; he let her play nurse and wrap him up in casts made out of the soft stuff Daddy called gauze and Cassandra answered lots of questions about being a grown up doctor even though she was a girl. JoJo really liked watching Simon and he let her play with his stescope and Michonne was really nice, but when it was time for bed, that was when JoJo didn't like it here at all. Carl, to his credit, was really fun but he didn't tell stories like Daddy and it was hard to really fall asleep without them. Tonight, she laid in bed next to Michonne and waited until she was sure that she and Carl were both asleep so that she wouldn't wake them and she crept down off the bed and out of the room, padding around the museum in bare feet and an oversized t-shirt. There were lots of people here and she didn't want to wake them up, either, so she tip-toed out to the main room and sat down on the floor with the roll of gauze Simon had given her to play with and she wrapped her own ankle with it. She missed Mommy and Daddy, but especially Daddy. JoJo thought about how worried they would be that she wasn't home and she wondered if she would ever get back to them again. She heard somebody — she didn't remember who — say that they were kidnapped and they couldn't get out. JoJo knew what kidnapped meant and, even though she didn't think anyone in the museum had done taken her, the idea was still scary. For the most part, she'd been so fascinated with her surroundings and all the new people, that JoJo really hadn't had much time to think about it. But just then, as the roll ran out and she had to unravel her ankle to do it again, it hit her. Somebody stole her from Mommy and Daddy and she might never go home. It started with a hiccup, merged into a few whimpers she tried to keep to herself, and before she knew it, it had escalated into full on crying as she re-wrapped her ankle to try to distract her mind from this scary kind of homesickness. JoJo tried to stay quiet because she didn't want to wake anybody up or make anybody mad, but she was scared and the tears just kept pouring down her cheeks, accented with the sniffles and shaking breaths she took to keep the lump in her throat right where it was. If she let it out, she'd make a sound and if she made a sound and somebody woke up, they would tell her to be a big girl and stop her crying before they gave her something to cry about. That was what Mommy said sometimes, anyway, and JoJo didn't want to hear that from a stranger, even if they were nice strangers. |
