Tate closed his journal and tucked it under his mattress before heading out of the creaky cabin. The shower was cold and the bed springs hurt a little but he kind of liked it. He'd never been on his own before, not physically anyway so it was different. He spent most of last night awake; throwing his pen up in the air and catching it over is head, thinking loosely about where he was and what it meant. For one thing, he was starting to think that he wasn't dead after all. He wasn't an expert or anything, but he was pretty sure that dead people didn't still have primal needs, so that just left the question of how and why he ended up here; wherever here is. Not that he was in any hurry to get back; he was just going wind up dead anyway if he wasn't zapped here by some mystical act of God. The people here seemed decent enough so far too. When he arrived with Hestia the night before, the whole place looked abandoned. He wondered how many other people were out there. Joey was even his age so that was pretty cool, he still couldn't tell whether she was one of those girls who were really into sci-fi, which he really didn't know much about personally; he knew about Star Trek and Captain Kirk and the Enterprise but he wasn't a huge fan of it, or what but he wasn't going to touch it. He didn't really care what she was into as long as she was chilled out and smart. He couldn't talk to the kids his age in his high school because they were all rich bitch snobs or jock douche bags; all superficial and no depth. The carnival was more than just a few minutes away, but Tate didn't really have any intention of racing her there, he just wanted to make sure that he got there first. Maybe it was old-fashioned but he knew subtle things like that made good impressions. He wasn't nervous about meeting her, but as a general rule, good impressions got you further than bad ones. Tate moved out of the forest and followed the dirt path to the carnival. The carnival was probably a lot of fun before it broke down and went to waste. He wondered what it was like back then before it was abandoned, if it was abandoned and this weird town wasn't just some crazy projection of some kind. Tate frowned pensively at the giant ferris wheel, it kind of made him want to explore the grounds. This town was so mysterious, he wanted to see all of it now. He turned back to face to main road, tucked his hands in his pockets, and waited for his blind play-date to show up. |
