A monitor appears on a couch at the barn.

The captives shown on this monitor are Shannon Rutherford and Ianto Jones who are participating in the "I can't breathe experiment." Both characters are shown in a glass box in which the air is rapidly being either sucked out or polluted with gas. There is an unidentifiable body on the floor nearby. There is no sound accompanying this monitor.

All monitors are black and white and are familiar to those characters who took part in "panic room." All are labelled "our dear departed." Monitors will go black at precisely 4:24 PM where all characters on screen will die for everyone to see.

For any who happened to be at the barn they'd catch sight of the terminal moments of Miss Shannon Rutherford and Ianto Jones in their little plastic box.

The box was smokey, almost hazy. If you looked close, though, you could see them thrashing. Ianto would kick at the walls; Shannon would beat at them with her hands until the very oxygen that they needed so desperately was gone. Coughing and gagging the pair would sputter. Soon the flailing became less apparent. Soon, they'd lie still on the bottom of that box.

We'll let you watch them a moment. A stir in Ianto's legs; a shudder from Shannon. Then it'd all stop.

In a blink the monitor goes black.

Jack Harkness was one who was at the Barn for those final moments. He had made his way from monitor to monitor, following the labels the Doctor had used in his journal. Yes, Jack was still calling them both Doctor. Nine was the Doctor and Ten was the Doctor -- there was no separating them in his mind. That was just how it was. He knew both men, he'd called both men Doctor -- yes, he'd follow that damned rule about one was the Doctor and one was John Smith in public, but in private? They were nothing more than The Doctor.

But that all paled as Jack stood in front of the grainy monitor, watching the image of Shannon and Ianto. His jaw tightened as he watched in horror as the life was slowly squeezed out of them. He'd failed. Watching that monitor, kneeling in front of it, his hand resting against the small screen, Jack watched in horror as they slowly stopped moving.

"No. Come on. Move," Jack hissed, beating his fist against the small screen. He could feel his throat close up, watching the two lie so still and unmoving on that floor. He had failed them both. He had promised to protect them, but in the end he had failed -- and he wasn't even there when they died. A part of Jack had made a silent promise that, no matter what, he would be there when Ianto died.

And he wasn't.

At least he hadn't been alone. That was all Jack could thank his lucky stars for -- Ianto hadn't died alone. But he had died and Jack wasn't there to stop it. Shannon had died. What the fuck kind of hero was he if he couldn't protect those he loved?

A fucking shoddy one, that's what. He was a hero only in his own mind. A real hero would have found the room, would have found a way to get them out. Would have done something -- not wander around aimlessly.

He was a failure. A complete and utter failure.

Jack didn't deserve the gift of immortality. He didn't. Others could have done better with it.

Angry tears pricked at his eyes as the monitor finally went black and Jack stared into his own reflection, hoping it would flicker on again but there was nothing. He wasn't sure how long he sat there, tears slowly sliding down his face. At least he had told Ianto -- there was at least that, right? Ianto had died knowing he was loved.

But he shouldn't have to die at all.

Jack wasn't sure how long he stood there in front of the monitor. Finally, at last, he leaned forward and pressed his lips to the screen where Ianto's head had been before it all went dark. He reached around back, undoing the belt from the buckle and stood, slowly doing up each button and sliding one end of the belt through the buckle. He didn't care about the temperature outside.

Jack didn't care about anything.

He stepped outside and began to wander.
