Who: The Ninth Doctor & Illyana Rasputin & [OTA]
What: Rose ran off. Again. So he's out looking for her.
Where: Near the post office / clock tower.
When: Day 16, 4:45pm
Rating: PGish
Status: Dropped

She was the worst (and best) companion the Doctor had ever had. Of course.. Sarah Jane had also been the worst (and best) companion he'd ever had. Ace, too, and-- Well, everyone, really... No. Not that kid.. what was his name? Aaron? Alan? The in-it-for-himself idiot who was now running around twenty-first century Earth with a Satellite Five concoction in his head. Hm.. what had been his name? Eric? No. It definitely started with an A. Well, it really didn't matter, he hadn't been worthy. Hadn't been good enough. Stupid apes.

The Doctor, at this point in his very long, very complicated life, was at the peak of his dislike for the human race. He was bitter, he was angsty, and he was reeling from the last few battles in the Time War. He hadn't fought the whole thing, but he'd finished it. This incarnation had been born in the middle of the Time War, at the height of the death and destruction. This regeneration had happened in a desperate situation. And it showed in his more brash nature, in his tendency to rather watch things burn, or see people get their just desserts, instead of saving them at the last moment. It was a trait that would pass over into Ten, surfacing mostly in the beginning, then periodically through the rest of his time. It was also why regeneration had such a short span of time, those who lived more violently often lived shorter lives. As of now, Nine had been the briefest span of time. That would soon change, though.

But that was all in the future, and for a Time Lord, who could see everything that ever had been and everything that ever could be, and Nine tended to shy away from peeking. He was curious.. but not nearly as much as his successor.

Right now, however, he was curious as to where Rose had gone. Ten was going to scold him for having let her out of his sight. But he knew that he'd continued to travel with her, after his regeneration, so Ten had to know that sometimes she just.. wandered off! He needed to buy her a leash, or one of those little monkey backpacks, so he could hold onto the tail that was really a cleverly disguised leash. Yes. That would work. Though, he didn't have one on her right now.. he needed to find her, first. He had no idea, of course, that she was safely with himself, elsewhere in the town.

So, the Doctor was turning around, and the first person he saw, he smiled brightly to and lifted a hand. "Excuse me, hello, have you seen a blonde girl? Short? Perky? Too much eye make-up?" He couldn't help the jab at her, even now.

After the emotional ups and downs of the morning, Illyana had taken to wandering the streets of the town, trying to get a feel for the place. She hated that she had to do it, but at the moment, there was no choice. Not when she couldn't escape to Limbo or teleport the whole way home. She'd never felt this trapped before, not without someone slapping an inhibitor collar on her.

In a way, this was worse than wearing a collar. With one of those, she knew there was no hope of using her powers at all. Here, she was being teased with them. They worked, but only inside of this tiny space. She assumed her sorcery would work much the same way; she hadn't felt comfortable enough yet to risk people seeing that particular aspect of her abilities.

Luckily for her, she was decent with directions and spatial relationships, so after a couple of hours, she actually felt like she had a basic idea of the lay of the land. She was about to head back toward the convenience store she'd seen on her way into town and scrounge for some snacks when the tall guy with the jacket ran up to her.

Illyana raised an eyebrow at him as he started rambling on. "Is that supposed to be some kind of bad pick-up line?" she asked, folding her arms across her chest. Okay, she wasn't wearing eye make-up, and she wasn't exactly short, or perky, but he'd gotten the blonde part right. But seriously, this guy was as old as Magneto! Maybe not quite that old, but still, pretty close. Why was he looking for a perky blonde?

As old as Magneto? The Doctor had six.. seven.. eight hundred years, or more, on Magneto! But at least he didn't look it. Forty, forty-five, those seemed to be the guesses of most people. They were only off by about.. nine hundred years. Not that big of a deal. However, when the blonde girl he'd asked rounded on him and asked if it was a bad pick up line, he raised his hands up, as if in surrender, and smiled at her.

"Not a pick-up line, I assure you. I'm looking for a friend of mine. About so high?" He held up one hand to indicate her size. "T-shirt, jeans, trainers, quite young.. about your age, really. Blonde. Name's Rose." He smiled again and lifted his eyebrows, almost as if him doing that would help her to recall having seen the young girl he was looking for. "She likes to wander off." They all liked to wander off. It was a curse. His own personal curse. Wandering Companions. Almost sounded like a disease, really...

"Recall anyone like that?" He didn't imagine she'd be wandering around with his suited self, knowing that it wouldn't be wise to have so much exposure. It wasn't a good idea. It was a very, very bad idea. And Ten would get an earful when Nine found out.

Okay, so not a bad pick-up line. The guy just thought he was funny. And maybe to some people he was. Didn't strike Illyana as such, but then, she had very little to find amusing as of late. She shrugged and shook her head. "Nope, sorry. Haven't met anyone named Rose today." She offered what she hoped was a decently pleasant smile. It was hard to tell sometimes. "I'm new today, so I haven't seen too many people yet."

"Was she supposed to meet you somewhere?" Illyana asked. The comment about liking to wander off bothered her slightly. This guy didn't seriously think his friend should stick by him at every second, did he? Wandering off brought to mind a lost puppy, one that had broken the leash and gone tearing off through the park.

"New today?" He repeated with a wide, but pleased smile. He wasn't the newest prisoner anymore. Wait. Why was that good? It wasn't, it was very bad. It meant they weren't stopping with him and Rose. It meant they still wanted more. He breathed in deeply, but was nodding then. "Right, haven't met her yet. No, she wasn't supposed to meet me, it's just not always safe here, so I've heard. People die here, you should try not to be alone if you can help it. Have you found your way to the Gym or the Museum yet? Those seem to be the most heavily populated." He pointed then, in two opposite directions, smile returning in a flash. He was quick to please... but also quick to anger.

"Have you got your journal? The book in the box that you would have woken up next to?" He had his, of course.. but wasn't pulling it out to show her. She'd either know what he was talking about, or she wouldn't, and he'd have to explain it anyway.

"People die everywhere," Illyana said, frowning. She blinked, hard, refusing to let her emotions get the better of her for the second time today. "It's not something that can be helped. Everyone dies." She looked up at the man. "But I take your point," she said, trying to sound a little less hard. He was only trying to help, after all, even if he did come across as a little patronizing.

"I've seen them, but I haven't stopped in either place yet," she said. They seemed like the types of places people would congregate, and she wasn't sure she was ready to deal with lots of people just yet. Before dark, perhaps. Although, she doubted that anything her captors would send against her could be as vicious as she was.

When he asked about her journal, Illyana nodded. "It and the water were really the only useful things in the box." The matches she'd left with the box in the woods. Fire spells, she could do outside of Limbo, so she didn't need them. The socks, not her style, so she'd left those as well. She'd probably regret it later, but today was warm, so she hadn't considered it at the time. "Any idea why or how it works like that?" Not that she expected the stranger to know, but perhaps, since he'd been here longer, she assumed, he'd know something more about it.

"Everyone dies." He agreed. "But not everyone has to die in this place." That last part was said with a lift of his brows and a more pointed look. Serious Doctor was serious. But then he was lifting his hands a little, as if to say 'I understand' when she told him that she hadn't yet stopped off in either place. He hadn't exactly explored this place yet, either. He'd only arrived recently, but the following day, he planned on having a good, long look around. And meeting some of the strangers in this place. Trying to make sense of it.

And he needed to talk to himself.

"I have ideas, but they're only that." And he wasn't quite as willing as his later self, to share those ideas. No real interest in looking clever, looking clever got you noticed. And he wasn't particularly interested in being noticed here. It was easier to do what needed to be done when you were someone unimportant. Though, he was sure that he wouldn't go unnoticed for long. "Have you found a place to settle in for the night, yet?"

"No, they don't," Illyana agreed. "But that's not always up to us, is it?" Bad Illyana. Don't go all bitter. If it had been up to her, Doug would still be alive, the X-Men would still be alive, Piotr would still be alive. She knew all too well how her wants had no bearing on the state of things. Wallowing in it would do her no good though. It was just difficult to pull herself around, trapped as she was.

She noticed the very obvious change of subject, but decided to let it slide. It really wasn't any of her business what his ideas were. And he clearly didn't want to share them. Rahne would have pushed, politely, but pushed. So would Dani, but not as politely. Illyana was content to let the man keep his thoughts to himself. "Not yet," she said, answering his question. "Where would you recommend?" Not that she'd necessarily go there, but if he'd been here longer, he might have a good idea of where the least uncomfortable crash space was.

"No, you're right about that." It wasn't always up to them. But if it were up to the Doctor? No one would be dying here. And he was doing to do his best to make that happen.. then again, it was rare that everyone lived. But he'd done it before. Sometimes, in a great while, everyone lived.

"I'd suggest the Museum, there are plenty of places around there to sleep, a second story, if you prefer privacy. All of the offices and storage closets are taken, but there are exhibit rooms." He'd taken his time and looked all around that museum, every inch of it, and he'd collected a few things he found that he liked. Poor Rose, she was stuck in a small room with the Doctor now, instead of in the impossibly large TARDIS. But she seemed to be faring well enough, so far.

"Is there running water at the museum?" Illyana asked. She'd gotten the impression that most of the town was non-functional, and her little bottle of water was only going to last her so long. She didn't like the idea of crashing in a large exhibit room, but for a working toilet and sink, she might compromise for a day or two.

"Is that where you are, the museum?" Always a good idea to know where the others who lived here at the moment were hiding themselves. She realized then that she didn't even know the man's name. She offered him her hand. If he wasn't going to start the introductions, she would. "Sorry, haven't introduced myself," she said. "Illyana."
