Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 15, location: carnival, remy lebeau, selene

Who: Selene and Gambit.
What: The vampire is finally free, or so she thinks.
Where: The Carnival, outside the Tunnel of Love.
When: Day 15, 12:00 PM.
Rating: PG-13 for likely swearing, could change.
Status: Complete.

It was with a start that Selene came to, all senses on high alert after all she had been through over the last four hours. And thank the gods, or whatever it was mortals found faith in, they hadn't taken away her sight again. Her hands dug into the dirt as she turned from her side and swiftly got to her feet, head snapping from one side to the other as she tried to take in her surroundings as quickly as possible. It was a small relief to be outdoors. If she saw another small room it would be too soon. But this was not a place she recognized, even if she did know the names for the scenery scattered around her.

As she moved to walk one of her boots brushed something solid, making her glance down, and the vampire bent to pick up the small box that had been beside her. Her brows furrowed and confusion grew when she opened it and surveyed the contents. "What the hell..." she murmured to herself, hesitating a moment before plucking the objects out and stashing them in various pockets inside her trenchcoat. They had no immediate use to her but that didn't mean there was no use. Things were most definitely not as they seemed and it was making her turn to caution, and caution said not to discard anything. The box, however, she left.

Only after she started walking did she think to look to the sky, eyes squinting slightly at what sunlight seeped around the clouds. Her shoulders tensed but she brushed aside the deeply ingrained instinct to seek shelter. Unless the sun was made of something different here it could not harm her. That was what she had to tell herself. It was still a bit unsettling, in light of her close call with the fire that morning. Or at least, she assumed it had been morning. Her hands went to her empty hip holsters out of habit, wishing not for the first time she had a gun, even an unloaded gun, to bring her some small measure of comfort. Looking around again, she headed toward some of the empty booths, figuring it couldn't hurt to see if there might be anything of use around. This was unfamiliar territory, and the vampire would explore systematically, just as she did when they used to hunt lycans out in the forests. If she came across anyone she would deal with them as necessary.

"You mus' be new." Came the languid, drawling voice of the Cajun, who was circling around the carousel to get a better look at the dark-haired woman who was stashing the tube socks in her trench coat. Oooh, he liked her coat. Careful, Selene. He liked other people's trench coats.. it was sort of a running gag. He had his (ruined) trench coat, he had Jack Harkness' trench coat (a Royal Air Force one from the 1950's.. he loved it), and he had the Doctor's trench coat (a simple brown wool thing, but it was bigger on the inside..), which he was wearing at the moment. He had a thing for trench coats, and if you weren't very careful, he might try to get his hands on it. Everyone here, after all, was worried about him stealing something or another of theirs. Even though they didn't have any real reason to be. Did he look like a thief?

Don't answer that.

"M' Gambit." He offered by way of introduction and allowed his lips to curl up into a smile. She was beautiful-- stunning, even. Absolutely gorgeous. And that outfit? She was like a dominatrix or something. She could spank him. That'd be A-Okay with the red-head. "Wha'cher name?" He questioned with that slow, easy (but hard to understand) Cajun accent.. as he came slowly forward, pushing his hands into the pockets of his trench coat (it was freezing outside.. forty-three degrees was not okay. It was unnatural!) and clenched them there, he offered her an easy, charming smile, his movements languid and lazy, cat-like in their grace as he closed the distance between them.

The vampire started at the sound of a voice, spinning on a heel to face the direction it came from, and one hand was halfway to her holster before she remembered she had no weapons. It must have been the breeze that kept the scent of blood or the sound of a beating heart from her. Or perhaps her nerves were just that frazzled from her experiences thus far. Either way, Selene was not the least bit pleased to have someone sneak up on her. Sure, he was a safe distance away, but all the same.

Before she had time to demand a name he was giving it and her eyes narrowed as she watched him suspiciously. As he came closer her senses picked up on what she'd been missing and part of her was relieved that he smelled human. His accent though, that was completely unfamiliar to her. Was he a local perhaps? "Selene," she finally answered, looking him over as she tried to determine what kind of a threat he might pose. That was when his eyes caught her attention and her shoulders tensed. No human she had ever seen had eyes like that, but he smelled as human as anyone. Perhaps they were some sort of contacts, wasn't that supposed to be a popular thing among mortals? She almost wished she paid attention to the creatures. "Where is this place?" She decided against 'what' in case he gave her a ridiculously obvious answer.

"S' call Vas Cap'io. Ain' really uh place.. more like uh box, ou' in 'de middle o' no where. 'Dere's a town, you can see.." He turned and gestured to the small town visible behind him, before he turned to look at her again and smiled, tilting his head to the side and causing that chin-length red hair to swing a bit. "Bu' it ain' no regular town." He breathed in deeply then and repeated his once-used shpeel about their predicament they were in. He loved meeting new people, so he could use it.

"You g' y' box, oui?" But he didn't wait for her to answer, simply broke into a smile. "'De book is uh j'rn'l. You can wri'e in it, an' ot'er people here, 'dey can see it. An' 'de nut jobs run 'de place? 'Dey can see it too. You can make t'in's priv'e, bu' it only hi'e it from 'de people here, no' 'de nut jobs run 'de place. Un'erstan'?" He didn't want for confirmation before carrying on. "Bien. 'De wa'er is impo'an', gon' wan' keep 'dat. Gon' get t'irs'y. 'De socks? Keep 'dem. Ain' got no show'rs workin' righ' now. An' keep 'de box. You gon' fin' you ain' go' not'in' on you wha' be yours, oui? 'Dey don' leave you not'in', jus' your clo'tes. Nice coa', by 'de way." Gambit wanted it. The black and red eyes stared for a long moment at it, so nice slimming, oh, she looked good.. before he looked up again and the smile returned to his face. This poor woman.

"Now 'dat outta 'de way. Bonjour, il est agréable de vous rencontrer." Hello, it's nice to meet you -- his attempt to sound as normal as possible. He was easier to understand in French.. if you could understand French. "'Dis is a lil' town in 'de mid'le o' a big glass box." He gestured upwards, then around in a circle. "'De glass don' break. Ain' no way ou'. We all trappe' in here. 'Dere 'bou' for'ty o' us? Give or ta'e. An' we don' all get 'lon'. Bu' for 'de mos' par', we ain' tryin' t' kill one ano'ter." He seemed sort of proud of that, and was running that hand back through his long hair, shaking it up some before he allowed his hand to fall again, and he pushed it into his pocket.

"'Dey do 'xperimen's here, an' 'dey kill people, an' leave 'de dea' bo'ies layin' 'roun' for us t' fin' 'dem. Take care t' stick close to a grou', so you ain' 'come one o' 'dem bodies." It was then that he took a moment to pause and glance upwards, as if searching his mind for anything else that needed to be said.. but when he found nothing, red and black eyes were lowering again to lock onto the poor, confused woman.

"D'accord?" Okay? Had he really just asked that?

He didn't come any closer for the moment which was good, as she would have hated to appear skiddish around a mortal. Although she doubted he knew what she was. Humans were so oblivious, but then, the war and her world had been kept well hidden from them, hadn't it? She paid attention to his ramble, managing to make sense of his accent for the most part. The only time her eyes drifted from him was when he gestured to the town. A town could mean many things, and she tried not to get her hopes up that it might be semi-modernized. As run down as the carnival was she imagined the town was in the same condition, which meant even if they had any sort of medical facility or blood bank it was likely empty or the blood spoiled.

Selene didn't interrupt him, although she did narrow her eyes slightly at the way he eyed her coat. Being a member of a coven that became quite materialistic she knew that look well. But that was far less important than the information about there being others and being trapped. A town in a glass box? What kind of nonsense was that? And his remark about people being killed only served to confirm the suspicion she had in her mind that her initial encounter was a specific set-up. Although if they they were so strong why not just shove her into the fire rather than mess with her? None of this made sense and were she capable of getting a headache she likely would have had a migraine.

"So, let me get this straight. This place --" she gestured slightly with both hands around them, "-- is in a giant glass box, with several dozen people being held here against their will having experiments performed on them?" She felt ridiculous just saying it, and couldn't help but shake her head. This wasn't a dream, or a nightmare, but something else entirely. The vampire didn't have a word for it, not in English or Hungarian or any other language she knew. She just stared off into space a few moments, trying to make some sense of the knowledge she'd just been given.

"Oui." He replied so simply, so matter-of-fact, and smiled at her, lifting his eyebrows some as both hands pushed firmly into the pockets of his Duplicate!Doctor's coat. "'Dey been clones, an' ear'tquakes, an' dea' bodies hangin' from 'de clock tower. An' 'De Doct'r been here 'de lon'est. He t'ink he clever, bu' he ain' 'dat smart.." Don't lie to the new girl, Remy.. "Okay, so maybe he is. Bu' don' tell him. He ge' a big hea', non? He be 'de guy in 'de trench, look like 'dis one." He moved his hands out some, pushing the jacket out while those fists remained pressed into the pockets. "An' he wear a blue sui'. He soun' like he from London."

The red-head shrugged up his shoulders uncomfortably. It was too damn cold outside! "Bu' oui. 'Dis a big experimen'. Kin'a sick, non?" It was, of course.. but it was also sort of exciting for him. He actually enjoying it.. just a little.

Her gaze returned to him and her attention perked slightly at his mentioning of the Doctor. "I met a man who called himself the Doctor earlier. I've no idea what he was wearing but he didn't sound like that." Selene frowned, wondering not for the first time since being separated what happened to him. She wasn't prone to caring about mortals but there had been something different about him, and more importantly he had put himself between her and the raging fire. It was the kind of thing the vampire didn't forget.

"More than kind of." she finally agreed. Since she seemed in no immediate danger at the moment from her surroundings curiosity was starting to make itself known, and she tilted her head slightly as she regarded him. "Your eyes... those aren't contacts, are they?" Because the way things were going they couldn't be, that would be too easy of an explanation.

"Wha' he soun' like?" The Cajun prompted, frowning just a touch. It was an odd look on him, since all he did was smile. Charming, smarmy bastard. But if someone was out there impersonating his Doctor, Gambit was going to be less than pleased, to say the least. This place was sick, but that was going a little far.

"M' eyes? Non, 'dey ain' contac's. 'Dey my real eyes. C'mon, wan' 'de ten cen' tour?" She would be the second new person in as many days that he'd shown around the town, and he really didn't mind. Not at all. She was absolutely stunning and Remy would be glad to spend more time with her.. and maybe find out about that other Doctor. "Where you mee' 'de ot'er Doct'r? An' wha' happene'?" Curious Cajun, like the curious cat. Beware, Remy, some day it would come back to bite you in the ass.

"Different. Northern, I suppose." Not suppose, she knew, but just because he was so forthcoming with information didn't mean she would be. After all, she hadn't the slightest idea why she was here, what precisely was going on, and perhaps most importantly if she could trust him. If she could trust anyone.

She made a thoughtful noise when he confirmed they were in fact his real eyes, and she thought about asking how they got that way before she decided it didn't really matter. There was no way he could be a lycan, or a vampire, and that was really all that concerned her. "In what I presume was an experiment, if you say that's what goes on." She didn't like saying the word. It got her riled up all over again at having been toyed with and put in potential danger. Instead of looking toward the town Selene turned her gaze the other way, toward the forest she had smelled the moment she regained consciousness. "What about over there? How far do these woods go?" Perhaps Michael was here, somewhere. Although she liked to think if he was he would have been searching for her... on second thought, perhaps it was better if he wasn't. She might have a hard enough time worrying about herself.

"Nort'ern, huh?" He frowned a little. That didn't sound like the Doctor. He slipped his hand into his coat to tug out his journal and flipped it open, making a small note before he closed it and tucked it away again. He'd check again in a few moments to see if he'd gotten a response.

"'De trees go back 'bou' five hun're' fee' or so? Maybe more? An' 'de 'dere's 'de glass box I tell you 'bou'. An' you can see t'rough 'de glass to 'de ot'er si'e.. jus' more trees. An' no' all 'de trees come from Ear't, you know wha' I mean? 'Dey ain' all normal. An' 'dere're people here ain' from his plane', ain' human. S'weir'." He warned her, shaking his head some.

"You do bes' to stick wit' a group, chere. 'De museum or 'de gym where mos' people go when 'dey ge' here, 'dat's 'de place wit' 'de mos' people. 'Dey help ge' you settle in, non?" He hadn't gone to either of those places.. but then again, he'd latched onto the Doctor and had followed him around all day, until he eventually ended up sleeping at the museum. But since then, he'd taken up residence in the secluded barn on the other side of the town.

Her brows furrowed as she continued to look at the trees. Something was off about the forest, yes, but it was still just a forest. Something she was deeply familiar with. And if there was a forest that meant there were likely some animals around, which meant she had a potential food source. Not that she particularly liked the idea but Selene had no idea when she might need blood and animals were far safer than humans. She could kill one, or worse. "Where else would trees come from?" She glanced back to him with a confused look on her face and decided then and there she needed to see this glass wall nonsense with her own eyes. "Show me this glass." It was more a command than a request, although her tone remained relatively the same, and she started walking without him. So there were others that didn't seem human... did that mean some of her kind might be around? She really needed to find some weapons. Selene ignored the comments about staying with a group. As far as she was concerned she was done with that sort of thing. Finding out you've been lied to for over half a millenia has a way of making a person just a wee bit distrustful.

"Dunno, ot'er plane's? We go' uh alien here." He was moving after her. "An' people from ot'er times an' dimensions. 'De las' date I 'member is nin'een-nine'y-t'ree." Which always seemed to surprise people, so he loved using that line. "Dis place weir', chere." He reminded her again. But when she demanded to be shown the glass and began walking that way, he groaned and stomped cold feet some. "It's like eigh' below zero, fille, why we gotta be goin' now?" Really, it was only about forty-three degrees, but the Cajun was used to ninety with a hundred percent humidity. This was killing him.

However, he did follow her. "'De glass ain' break'ble. 'De Doct'r t'ink it gotta be somet'in' special. Go' a guy here, one I know from where I come from, an' he can' even break it. An' he can break anyt'in'." That made Gambit's lips curl up some. Wolverine broke loads of things where Remy came from. All the time. The man was like a bull in a China Shop!

"An alien, hm?" The reply was made rather absently as her attention was more focused on their surroundings. As soon as she was walking past trees she felt instantly better; it may have been cloudy and she may have known she could withstand sunlight but she felt somehow safer with winding tree branches overhead. Even if some of them looked rather peculiar. Other planets and dimensions, he said? It was even more fantastical than the lies Viktor had spun.

His complaining about the temperature drew her gaze, and the look she gave him was slightly unimpressed. "Where I come from it gets far colder. There isn't even snow on the ground here." Granted, temperature was something that didn't bother her and usually didn't draw her attention. "You have a coat, you should be warm enough." And then her attention was forward again, walking easily over the terrain. She did have to force herself to slow her pace though, and wondered if she should just explore this place on her own.

"Non, if 'dere was snow on 'de groun' I be curle' up somewhere sleepin' 'til it ge' warm. Was nine'y degrees two days 'go." He assured her with a little puff of breath. "'Dis weat'er change ain' welcome." The weather changed so dramatically here.. summer days, then snow, then rain, then autumn, then snow, then summer.. And Gambit was ready to hole up in his barn until the weather went back to being normal. Maybe if he asked real nice the Doctor would stick around and keep him warm.

Yeah right.

"Why you wan' see 'de glass anyway, chere? Jus' glass." He was asking.. but he'd wanted to see it when he'd arrived, as well. It was hard to believe, after all, that they were being kept in a large glass box. Strange, to say the least. And they'd walk for a good ten minutes, with Remy explaining more (mostly, he was bitching about the weather change.. and the polar bears he'd seen this morning -- but that was just him exaggerating). But soon enough, they'd come up on that thick glass, and Remy puffed out a breath and stomped cold feet again. "Go all 'de way up an' meet wit' 'de ceilin'. An' go down far too. Too far t' dig."

The vampire rolled her eyes lightly at his complaining about the weather. If she had to choose she'd probably prefer rain and snow over anything else, just because it was what she was most used to. That and precipitation meant clouds to cover up the sun.

"Because it sounds absolutely ridiculous." she replied frankly, not sparing a glance this time. Surely he thought the same, if it was indeed true. Maybe she was simply going to have a hard time believing anything from now on. That was going to get old. The vampire tuned out most of his chatter, hoping there weren't any dangerous creatures around because he was certain to attract them and thus far he'd done nothing to merit her saving his skin. But finally they came upon the wall of glass and Selene slowed, not believing her eyes. Tentatively she approached and pressed her fingers against it, first lightly, then harder, and she tilted her head back to gaze upward to see just how high it went. If there was weather it had to go quite high. She cursed softly and couldn't contain the urge to knock at the glass with her knuckles. "I've never seen anything like it..."

"We ain' nei'ter." He huddled his arms in closer to his body to keep them warm, letting out a slow rush of breath as he did. Oh, he could see his breath! That was wrong. "An' 'de stars a' nigh', 'dey ain' real. Jus' a projec'ion, or somet'in'. An' de weat'er fake, 'dey jus' make it wha'ever temp'sure 'dey wan'." Really, it was like they were ants living inside a little bottle and every now and again the little child who had captured them would shake said bottle. That was how it felt -- that was really how it felt when the earthquake had happened.

However, he was tugging his journal back out a moment later and flipping it open. After writing something in it he paused.. then looked up at her. "You ain' happen t' know if 'dat Doct'r had big floppy ears?" Questioned smoothly. He must sound like a crazy man.

If the stars were fake then... "The sun must be fake too." she said mostly to herself, eyes raising to stare at a few clouds. It took a little of the tension out of her, but only for a moment. "That doesn't make any damn sense." Blue eyes flicked to the forest she could see on the other side of the glass. No, the weather had to be real, at least to an extent. The vampire could only stretch reality so far, and it was already pushing her limits. His question pulled her from her thoughts and she turned to him, tilting her head slightly as she looked at him. "I don't know. We were blind at the time. Why do you keep writing in that?" Her tone was close to irritated and she didn't wait for an answer before starting back the way they came. She had every intention of exploring the forest more, but she didn't want to do it with a yapping mortal at her heels.

"M' talkin t' 'de Doct'r. He wanna know if 'de ot'er Doct'r got floppy ears, 'das all." He was tucking it away then. "'Member I tell you it can talk t' ot'er people? Well, 'das wha' we use 'dem for." He broke into a grin but was turning to keep pace with her, hopping that first step to do so, but it was easy after that. He was taller than she was and had longer legs.

"Where we goin' now?" He hoped it was back to the town, somewhere nice and warm.. maybe back to the theater. There'd been food there. Why had he left again..? Stupid Cajun. Stay in the warm place with the food. He let out a slow breath. Yeah, he never listened to himself. He should start.

She opened her mouth, then closed it, deciding better of trying to make sense of things outloud. An open mind, that was what she needed, since clearly everything here was slightly crazy. It almost made her miss the coven, and damned Kraven chasing after her. Almost, because thinking of Kraven got her thinking of the lies he helped spin around her as ordered by Viktor, her eyes brightening slightly as she got angry. Maybe there was a lycan hiding somewhere she could kill. That would make her feel better.

"Is there anything of use at the carnival?" He had been here longer than she so she assumed he would at least have some knowledge of what might be lying around. If he was going to tag along with her she figured she might as well get some use out of him. A little cold, perhaps, but could one really blame her?

He tilted forward some, leaning as he watched her, noting easily the way her eyes got brighter. Well. That was something different, wasn't it?

"You ain' human, nei'ter." He stated calmly, a slow smirk coming over his face. Of course.. she could have been like him. Not quite human, but not quite different, either. Somehow, he didn't think he was that lucky. It was just him and Logan. No one else from their world that he'd seen. Or that he'd heard of. So the chances that this lady was from his world? Slim to none, if that. But he'd never seen a human's eyes get bright like that. It was really quite amazing.

No electricity. Of course not. Although the majority of her life had been spent without it so the lack of it would hardly cripple her. It provided conveniences, nothing more. She hadn't thought anything of her eyes, or him paying such close attention to her, so she looked to the side at him at his comment. "No, I'm not." It was the smirk that prompted her not to simply leave it at that. Hadn't he mentioned some nonsense about aliens? Not that he was exactly normal, with those red eyes of his. She let herself focus on the scent of his blood, something she had been actively ignoring, and as the scent sparked the faint stirrings of her bloodlust her eyes brightened more and her canines extended slightly, teeth sharpening. "Is that a problem?" she asked, giving a slight smirk of her own, enough to be sure her ivory teeth showed.

The blatant 'Ooooh' that showed on his face came silently, but it was obviously a pleased expression, because a smile broke out after that. "You uh vampire, chere? No lie? Wow. 'Das kin'a ho'." He laughed some and shook his head, red eyes lowering to study her fangs, then sweeping over her face again. "Gorgeous an' dang'rous. My kin'a lady." But it was flirting and only flirting. Gambit flirted with everything that moved, which most people in this place had figured out by now. It could be a blessing or a curse, really.

"You migh' wanna keep 'dat qui'e from 'de res' o' 'dese people, 'dough. Go' two guys shou'in' at me, somet'in' 'bou' t'inkin' I'm uh demon. Don' t'ink 'dey'd take so nice t' you, if 'dey ha'e demons so much, non? Bu' 'fore you ask: non, I ain' a demon." Just to clarify that. And as they were stepping out of the forest, he stomped his feet again. The breeze had returned, since the trees were no longer there to block it. "Ain' a big town. Bu' go' plen'y in it. Wha' you wanna see firs', chere?"

Her lips pursed slightly as the smirk lingered and she returned to tuning out the scent of his blood, the light of her eyes slowly fading over the next few minutes. So wherever he came from there were vampires too, or he at least knew of them. That was interesting. Not that his reaction wasn't interesting on its own. "I always try to keep it quiet. Safer that way." Though she clearly looked like she could take care of herself. Something told her he would understand what she meant. A brow arched at talk of demons, and she was back to being curious. "They sound superstitious. Although I can see how they might draw such a silly conclusion." She kind of liked his eyes, to be honest. Made her feel like she wouldn't stick out as much.

Her eyes flicked up and down him as he began to act cold again, but this time she kept from rolling her eyes. "Is there any kind of medical facility?" She doubted she would find any usable blood anywhere, short of fresh, but she wasn't above finding items that could be used to contain it. With no idea how much she now needed to feed or how often she wanted to err on the side of caution. If there were superstitious types she didn't need to be falling into a bloodlust and showing her fangs to everyone. It would royally piss her off if someone tried to burn or stake her. Well, particularly burn, given how her morning had gone.

He just nodded when she said that it was safer that way. He understood that completely.. it was safer for him, as well, to play down the fact that he was a mutant. It was safer to pretend he was human, but it was hard, most times, with those eyes.. sometimes people thought they were contacts, sometimes people thought it was just a birth defect. Sometimes they called him a mutant and a monster and ran him off. He'd been called a demon before coming here as well, and he was sure it wouldn't be the last time.

"Ah.. yeah. 'De gym se' up like uh hospi'al. Go' beds an' a lil' sterile area. An' we go' uh few doct'rs. Ain' really go' no supplies, 'dough.. wha' you lookin' for 'de me'ical place for? You ain' hur', are yo--oh." Right. Blood. He seemed to get it just then and nodded a little. "Ain' one 'dem types ea' people 'den? 'Dey're some deer, ou' in 'de fores', if you can ea' animals. Dunno 'dough, changes from story t' story, sometime 'de vampire can ea' animal, sometime non." And he wasn't quite sure what real vampires would have to eat.. just the ones in his comic books, and the ones in movies. Even the bad movies.

With those eyes, she did wonder just how human he was. It wasn't a concern, per se, she just liked to know what she might be up against. Thus far he had made no move to harm her so she had no reason not to act the same. The vampire could be quite civil when necessary. He caught on before she needed to explain her inquiry, which was a nice change of pace. "I haven't fed from a human in some time, no. Where I come from we use synthetic blood as a means to feed. Cuts down on the chance of being exposed." Her eyes surveyed the carnival and she decided she could explore it more on her own later. Rummaging around and coming up with possibly nothing was less important than finding out what else she had to make due with. "So the forest goes all the way around the area?" It made sense, like back in the old days. Scary looking forests were a good way to both keep things out and in. It also meant she had plenty of room to hide, or hunt, should the need arise.

"Oui, 'de fores' goes all 'de way back.. an' 'deres more in some places. Like near 'dis house in 'de fores', real deep in. Like half uh mile from 'de town to 'de glass, wit' 'de house in between." He shrugged up a shoulder and huddled his jacket in closer as he began walking again. "C'mon, I show you to 'de gym, non? Lo'sa rooms 'dere, can ge' you one an' you be on your way t' bein' one o' us, 'de 'Survivors'. 'Das wha' 'dey callin' us, anyway." He didn't really understand it. Yet. But he would, once everyone got back from their experiments and they found out just how many people they'd lost this last round. No one would be pleased.. even Remy had lost someone he (almost) considered a friend.

But he didn't know it yet. None of them did. Not yet.

"Wha' happen wit' de' ot'er Doct'r, by 'de way? 'De boys, 'dey askin'." He hadn't wanted to prompt her again so soon, but the time seemed right. "Wha' happen in 'de 'xperimen'?" He'd been in one before, it hadn't been fun. He really hoped they'd leave him alone from then on.. he was no fun. There were others that were lots more fun than him!

"Any place more useful than a gym?" Selene walked alongside him only because she didn't know her way around yet and she wasn't about to trail behind some quasi-human. She wasn't big on following in general. Mentioning of a house, that intrigued her. "If there's a house why are people staying in a gymnasium?" It made little sense to her, unless there was something terribly wrong with the house. In which case the vampire would be more than happy to occupy it. A place to herself, where people didn't want to go? It was perfect for her. "And generally the sheep don't invite the wolf in for the night. No offense." She shot him a glance at the comment about setting her up where others were staying.

As they walked she occasionally glanced around, her senses sharp and on alert at the same time as she was memorizing it all. One never knew what might become vital information. His questions almost irritated her, in part because she was uncertain about just giving away information, especially information that might make her seem vulnerable. "What 'boys'?" Where there children running around this place? That would just be cruel. And might make the vampire a little homicidal. "The journal, right? It's a means of communication. Like a cell phone." At least that was how he was making it sound.

"More useful? Non. We go'.. 'de house-- an' no one in 'de house 'cause Dean say it's haun'e'." Haunted, he'd meant. Sorry, Selene, he had some trouble speaking, with that thick New Orleans, Cajun accent. It confused a lot of people. Not to mention that his English was bad.. he was much easier to understand in French. It had an accent to it, but at least he had proper grammar and some things were simply.. easier to say, for him. Sometimes he mixed the two languages.. and that was hard to understand. "An' we go' 'de museum, 'das were lo's o' people stay. An' de cavnival," He gestured back where they'd come from. "'De t'ea're." Theater. So sorry, Selene. "'De Lie-berry." Surely, that wouldn't need too much explanation. "'De Pos' office, an' de pharmacy, 'de gas s'a'ion, de clock tower. An' 'de barn. 'Das where I live, in 'de barn." Where you raised in a barn? He liked to say 'Yes!'. Now he could!

"So non, 'dere ain' no more helpful places, chere. 'Dis place like Hell, bu' col'er." Much colder than Hell. Too cold for the red-headed thief.

"De boys, 'dey 'de ones in 'de book-- oui, like uh cell phone, 'cep' you wri'e, an' 'dey wri'e back. Real quick. Only t'in' is, 'de people runnin' 'dis place? 'Dey can rea' wha'ever we wri'e." Which.. may or may not be a drawback, it depended on what you were talking about.

His accent did confuse her a bit, but only because she had never heard it before. She was good at adapting though, and any slips of French wouldn't phase her. The vampire had a basic knowledge of that language; she'd hunted all over Europe, and besides, a few hundred years was plenty of time to learn other languages when it became necessary. "A haunted house? So no one goes there?" She didn't believe in such things but if it kept other people away... "And all these buildings are fairly near to each other, or is it more of a spread out little town?" She was already getting a picture in her mind, and her eyes went to the run-down buildings that were getting ever nearer.

She snickered, softly, at him likening it to Hell. "Oh, I'm sure I've experienced much worse." A pit full of shifted lycans was the first thing that came to mind, although dealing with the vampire council was pretty scary itself. "Are any of these boys something other than human? Or are you the most interesting person I'm likely to find?" There was a teasing tone in her voice, mostly to coax him into telling her more. Not that she suspected it would take much to get him to talk.

No, it wouldn't take much to get him to talk at all. "'De town pretty crunche' toge'er, you gonna see." In fact, they were just getting in closer now, and were coming between the theater and the library, with him gesturing to each. "Some 'de buil'in's. An' you can see 'de ot'ers beyon'. Bu' 'de house far ou', maybe ten minu'e walk from 'de town? Somet'in' like 'dat... res' all clumped in." Which she'd see now that they were coming closer to the center.

"Non, no one go to 'de house. Been 'dere once, jus' 'dis mornin'.. ain' plannni' on goin' back in." He sniffed some and shrugged up his shoulders. He wasn't scared, just.. didn't like the idea of ghosts. Enemies he couldn't touch. "Oh yeah? Well, bein' wha' y'are, guess I can see 'dat." He flashed her a grin before looking forward again. "'De boys.. well, 'dere's 'de Doct'r. An' 'den 'dere's Jack. Ain' sure 'bou' him.. he can' die. Like.. really can' die. Buildin' fall on him, he still fine." Which was creepy, somehow. Okay.. it was creepy in every way.

"Mos' 'de people seem human t'me. Bu' t'ink you'd know better." Once she smelled them, that was. Or, so Gambit assumed.

Her pace slowed some as they came into the town so she could get a good look around. It really was quite small. Made her think a more fitting description would be that it was what was left of a town. But the house was a little distance away? That just made it sound all the better. She was definitely going to have to investigate for herself. ...wait, what did he just say?

"A building fell on this man, and he was perfectly fine?" The vampire stopped walking and looked at him incredulously. That sounded like... well, she wasn't quite sure, actually. But someone who supposedly couldn't die was certainly a threat. Ignoring that some might put her in that category.

"Oui. 'De museum fell on him. 'Dere was an ear'tquake an' de buil'in's all fell in. An' it fell on him, bu' he was jus' fine. Ot'ers weren' so lucky." He let out a slow breath. But the others weren't him, so he wasn't that concerned with them dying. He'd been hurt in that earthquake, but only slightly.

He stopped though, as well, and turned to face her. "Kin'a s'range, I know. Shoul'n' happen, bu' lo'sa stuff happen here shoul'n' happen. An' ain' much foo', but 'dat ain' no pro'lem f' you" He smirked a little as he said it, he was so clever. But then he shook his head. "An' 'dis guy I know, Logan, he ain' die, eit'er. Been 'live uh lon' time. Real lon'." Then again, the Doctor was particularly old, as well. Remy just wasn't sure.. how old he was.

The vampire was quiet a few moments, thinking that over. She was torn between wanting to meet this man and not. There was a fine line between being curious and being defensive and she seemed to keep slipping off one side or the other. It wasn't a position she was comfortable being in. She did her best to shake off her worry for now. So there were humans and those that seemed human but weren't, she was going to have her work cut out for her separating friend from foe. Once she decided to start trusting people, that is. If it happened.

"But you're not, hmm? Real old." She raised a brow slightly, drawing the conclusion from the way he spoke of others. Perhaps she should keep to herself just how old she was.

"Mm, non. Twen'y-one, twen'y-two, somet'in' 'roun' 'dere. Ain' qui'e sure 'de exac' date.. So don' really know f' sure." He laughed some and bounced a little with his steps, still trying to get the cold out of his system.

Though, the fact that she had prompted him about being 'not old' left him with the strange feeling that she wasn't 'not old', which turned red eyes onto her once again, eyebrows lifting up curiously. "An' jus' how ol' are you, Selene?" He liked the way her name rolled off his tongue, and it came out sounding distinctly more French than the rest of his words, purred more than it was drawled. He really liked the sound of it, which was very evident in the way his lips curled up afterwards. He could say her name all day.

She simply nodded slightly when he spoke of around how old he was. It was an age she scarcely remembered. Early twenties, why, she'd still been mortal then. The vampire found her lips curling upward a bit when the inevitable question came. "Are you sure you really want to know?" She shrugged a shoulder as she glanced around them, speaking as her gaze eventually returned to him. "I can't remember exactly to be perfectly honest. The years start to blur together into one long night. Upwards of six hundred, that I know for sure." And she let that sink in as she surveyed the town around them, faintly smelling the blood of those in the buildings nearest them.

"Wow, six hun're'? Ain' ba'." He inclined his head a little to the side, but was slowly coming to a stop near the gym, off a bit to the side. And he was nodding at it, shifting from foot to foot in a little 'keep my ass warm' dance, before he curled his fists and pushed them down further into his coat. "Hear' 'bou' vampires ol'er. In 'de books." His comic books. Just.. don't ask.

"An' 'dis 'de gym." Apparently, this was also where he was leaving her. He was freezing his ass off and was ready to go back to his warm barn and curl up in his warm sheets and take a cat nap for the next... oh.. twelve or so hours. And then he'd be able to go to sleep! Wouldn't that be nice.. he was smiling, just thinking about it.

Her gaze went to the building and then to him. Ah, humans and their disadvantage of being bothered by temperatures. "Perhaps you should invest in a thicker coat if you get cold so easily." Was that... teasing? Apparently the walk and chatter had been enough to give the vampire some sense of normalcy back. Or maybe it was the sense of others being about and she was starting to make efforts to try and blend in. At least it was daytime, even if it was cloudy. No one would expect to see a vampire while the sun was still out. "I hope you don't mind, but I think I'll explore a bit on my own. If I need directions though, I'll be sure to come find you." The last was said with a small smile, as she was careful not to just dismiss him. He knew her secret, that meant she needed to be more careful in her interactions with him.

"Yeah, you t'ink, non?" He grinned a little lopsided grin at her, all charm and eagerness, before he was rocking some onto his toes. "Sure, chere. An' 'dere's uh map in 'dat book. Drew one up jus' 'dis day. If y' need some direc'ions an' you can' fin' me." He nodded again, then backed off a few steps and gave her a wink.

"I see you la'er, fille." And with that, the red-head was turning to head off back to his warm barn, shrugging up his shoulders in an effort to keep his neck warmer.
