Experiment Thread: Tonks and Elliott
Who: Tonks and Elliot
What: Being good guinea pigs
Where: Undisclosed location
When: 8AM, day 15
Rating: PG-14

Day 15 finds Elliott and Tonks  dropped into is much larger than the space they are actually confined to. Both characters wake up in a 5x5 plexiglass cube that cannot be broken. There are vents in the walls that are clearly shown to connect to pumps. Outside of the cube the quite dead form of Sid Jenkins is visible. He appears to have suffocated.

Additional information for this experiment to be provided as the thread progresses.

Tonks normally didn't sleep so heavily. Call it paranoia..Merlin knew that she teased Moody about it all the time..but sleeping just didn't come as easily in a place that kept you on your toes. But, once she woke up fully enough, she'd assume that it was because of the weird magic spell (or drugs) that had affected them the day before.

As it was, the mousy-brown haired girl was stirring. And it was decidedly not where she had fallen asleep. She rubbed at her eyes, frowning, and looked around. Box? Usually people accused her of opening proverbial boxes and not being in a literal box. She leaned on the wall, both testing its weight and just to lean in order to wake up more. There was someone else with her. Tonks recalled that she saw her at the gym, but hadn't met her. "Oi." Voice was still sleepy, but she figured that she needed to get the other woman up so that they were both ready for whatever was coming.

Unfortunately, Tonks didn't know what was already there. Her back was to the crumpled form outside of the box.

Elliot woke slowly at Tonk's call, her hand reaching out to pull the tiny travel pillow she'd fallen asleep clutching closer only to find she was now on the ground instead of one of the cots at the Gym. She pushed herself up slowly, trying to blink herself awake as she took in her surroundings and made out the woman sitting in front of her. She recognized her. Kind of. She wasn't sure what her name was, but she remembered her injury from the earthquake. "Hey," she said, her own voice sounding groggy as she tried to process what she was seeing.

They looked to be in some kind of glass box, or maybe plastic. It reminded her of the booths they had at movie theaters. She took in a deep breath and rubbed her eyes, making sure she wasn't dreaming all of this. "Where are we?" She asked, looking at Tonks.

Something caught her eye and she leaned to the side to see past Tonks and through the clear glass to the other side. Her eyes widened as she scrambled to her feet. "Oh my God!" she said, as she ran to the glass. "Sid? Sid!"

She banged on the glass with the palm of her hands, emotion overruling the diagnosis that her brain was already making at the sight of his lifeless eyes and blue lips. "Sid?"

"Dunno. One minute at the gym, sleeping.." The answer trailed off because Elliot was trying to get past Tonks in the small box. It was incredibly small. She frowned, thinking about that, but then processed what was going on.

Turning around quickly, she saw the body of..someone..Sid? Sid! She pressed against the barrier, kicking at it with a booted foot to see if she could break it and get to Sid. "If we can find a weak point, we can kick it in." If they were in time, they could save Sid!

Elliot looked over at Tonks with a deep frown, not really understanding what she was saying at first. She stared dumbly at her as she tried to kick the glass with her foot and then her brain caught up with her.

She swallowed and nodded. She didn't have the footwear to be kicking it the way Tonks was. Instead she curled up her fists and started pounding on the glass, moving down the wall. The box didn't even shiver or move at all. She didn't even realize she was crying until her vision grew too hazy. She reached up and wiped at her eyes. "It's not working," she said, her voice tense and shaky.

Oh, don't fret, darlings. Sid won't feel any of this.

The pumps kicks on with a rumble and a roll. They were loud and their closeness made the glass box vibrate a little. More importantly, a gas started to seep in through the vents. It smelled thick and heavy, like smoke but much more chemical. It burned their eyes and nose and throat. More importantly, it would slowly start to constrict their throats.

Up between a pair of the vents, a button, formerly transparent, illuminated. If one of the characters pushed it there would be a delay. First the pumps would idle and then stop. The filling gas stopping. Then, the pumps would move in reverse, pulling the gas and their air back with them.

Don't wait too long before hitting that switch again, dear.

No no..this was not how it was supposed to be. Tonks hadn't ever really had a strong dislike for small places, but that was because she had never been in one that didn't have an out. Didn't have an escape. Training told her always to have an escape route. She kicked one point of the wall again, in sheer frustration, and looked back to Elliot. It had always been difficult to keep emotions off of the Auror's face. And right now she was worried.

Very worried.

"Tonks, by the way." Trying to give this horrible situation a semblance of normalcy. But that didn't last long. Before she had even finished her introduction, the sound of the pumps and the vibration caught her attention. Gas. Fuck. "Cover your mouth and nose!" She did so with the collar of flimsy t-shirt. But that wouldn't work, of course.

Already, she felt sick and started coughing, her body trying to find a way to expel the gas.

Elliot's hands dropped to her side and her eyes traveled back over to Sid's body on the ground. She'd never asked him how old he was, but he'd just been a kid. Sixteen? Seventeen? Eighteen at the most. She was crying freely now for Sid and for herself. Earthquakes she could handle. Earthquakes were or could be a natural occurrence, but this...

Someone had murdered him. A kid. It was just like Andy said. People died here. She glanced over at Tonks, taking in a shuddering breath. "Elliot," she breathed.

The glass began to vibrate as the pumps came to life and her eyes grew wide and panicked. She pulled off her jacket and covered her mouth and nose as instructed. "What is it?" She yelled even though it was muffled by the fabric, glancing up at the vents. Her eyes began to burn and she blinked. She pulled her jacket back and pointed upwards. "There's a button up there!" She said, sucking in a mouthful of air in the process and feeling it burn her throat. She coughed, squeezing her eyes shut as she tried to get a breath.

"Giant Doctor!" She said her voice panicked as she snapped her eyes open and reached out for the other woman, grabbing her arm. "Get on my shoulders. Maybe you can reach it!"

Elliot squatted down and held her hands out behind her, momentarily dropping her jacket. She'd need both hands to make sure Tonks was balanced. She'd done this often enough with JD to know. She coughed again, trying to press her nose against the inside of her shoulder. "Don't worry, I have ridiculously strong thighs. Just don't mind the camel butt," she said, trying to suppress another cough.

A button? What kind of shitty thing is that? Tonks thought about it. She could morph into someone taller..but the button would still be ridiculously out of reach. There was only so far her abilities went. But as she was puzzling this out, in midst of coughing and burning eyes, the other woman..Doc Elliot..grabbed her arm.

"Giant Doc--Oh!" Elliot was crouching, so she quickly moved to hop up on her shoulders. "If I weigh a ton, blame the junk food cravings I had yesterday." Coughing and wheezing, she was still trying to keep a little bit of humour. "Camel butt?" What in the world?

No time for that though! Once the women performed Giant Doctor, Tonks was reaching out to hit the button. At first it was a no-go. She had to shake her head a few times because it was getting more and more difficult to breathe. Just a little more..stretching out her arm and stretching on Elliot's shoulders, she stared at her fingers. Grow just a little bit!

That was when she hit the button. The pumps stopped, thank Merlin. "Tallest Auror in the World." Muttered.

"I'll explain later," Elliot choked out when Tonks asked about the camel butt. It wasn't her fault she had a freakish vertebrae that stuck out when she bent over. It was completely natural.

She straightened up, gripping Tonk's legs with her hands to steady her. She could feel the other woman stretching upwards, feeling her own throat constricting under the gas. She could feel nausea building in her stomach as the smoky heaviness descended on them and then suddenly then pumps stopped.

The sudden silence allowed her to hear Tonk's muttering. "Doctor," she corrected, before leaning forward in order to slip Tonks off. She jumped as the pumps started moving again. "Oh God," she said, covering her nose and mouth again, but when she looked upwards she could see the gas being sucked out of the room. She gave a shiver of relief. "See any more buttons?" She asked looking around the room. Maybe one for a way out?

Her eyes swept over Sid's body and she turned her back guiltily on it. "We've got to get out of here."

The gas started rolling back, being sucked out like some sort of crazy vacuum cleaner got a hold of it. She was still coughing, trying to expel all of the crap from her lungs. Ruffling up her hair and taking a deeper breath, Tonks closed her eyes in gratefulness. That felt good.

She was looking around then, searching for another button. "That one was kinda hidden yeah? Feel around for one." She started doing just that, running her hand over the side of the glass that she was on. And stopped when she was looking at Sid.

"Who would do such a thing?" Asked quietly, very sobered by the sight.

Elliot obeyed without a word, frantically searching her side of the glass for an invisible button. Was this some kind of game? Was she really some lab rat being stuck in a cage and studied for behavior? This just didn't happen. It couldn't be happening.

"I don't know," Elliot said, stilling at Tonk's question. She turned around and looked at Sid, her brow furrowing. "He had a British accent." That in itself was all she really knew about Sid. Their brief conversation had been so centered around the treatment of his ankle that she hadn't learned anything else about him. She'd been so tired at the time that she hadn't even really tried. And now he was dead and she had no idea of who he was or who would miss him outside of this place. He probably had a mother. A father.

Elliot let out a shaky breath before she got back to work frantically feeling the walls for a second button. "I'm not going to die here. I can't. This place isn't real. Right?" She said to herself.

Tonks listened, still staring at Sid's body while Elliot spoke. "Poor bloke." She took a moment for the fallen, but was quickly returning to looking for a button. Fingertips slid over every inch of the glass that she could reach, and she was soon crouching so she could feel along the bottom.

She turned around quick-like when Elliot spoke to her self, so quick that she lost her footing and fell on her ass. It wasn't a far fall or anything, but just enough to briefly startle her. "No." Said fiercely. "We're not gonna die in here. Not here an' not for a while."

The gas had started to clear and the fog became less and less intense in their little cube. A beeping noise started. It was slow, like a heartbeat at first; but it Elliot and Tonks listened it would get faster and faster with each passing minute until it was a solid tone and the pumps started again.

This time the smoke came in at an exponential rate to the way it had before. Hit that button, kiddos; though, don't strain too much, you wouldn't want to use up all your precious air.

The pumps would not be stopping, unfortunately. The smoke would roll in, the air would be contaminated, and it would only be a matter of time before Tonks and Elliot would suffocate. Sorry, ladies, there's no winner this go 'round.

Elliot looked up as Tonks fell, studying the other woman's face as she talked. "Okay," she said, nodding quickly even if she wasn't sure she believed it. She wanted to.

She stilled at the sound of a beep, spanning around in the glass cage to see where it was coming from. "Did you hear that?" She asked, looking over at Tonks. It sounded again and again and Elliot swallowed, her throat feeling raw. "What is that?"

She squinted out past the glass trying to make out if there was anything out there past the 5x5 cube.

"Okay." Repeated softly, half for her own sake as well. There was a brief moment of reprieve then, head tilting back on the plexi-glass even as her hand moved along the bottom. Still searching.

No. No reprieve. She stood up quickly, looking around. "I heard it." What -was- it though? Dark eyes were wide, trying to find the source. "It's gettin' quicker." Just like her heart. Tonks banged on the glass then, shouting for help. But in between her shouts she heard that beep go so fast that it nearly became one long noise. And heard the pumps kick in after that.

She looked to Elliot then, mouth in a thin line. "Remind me to hex them into the next life." She was so scared and angry that the witch might just be able to hex someone without a wand. "We need to hit the button again, hey?" Quick-like, Tonks was trying to maneuver back to where the button was. But the cloudy gas was rolling in at a rate that was faster than Tonks could move.

It sounded like a heart monitor, though it was building too much speed to be a human's heart. Elliot couldn't find the source and she started to feel herself panicking. They were trying to scare them, to freak them out, to play games with them. She had to stay calm. She couldn't let her emotions get the better of her. She had to...

She sucked in a deep breath as the pumps started moving, a moment later smoky gas making it's way down from the air pumps. She put her hand over her mouth and nose. Not again. Not again.

She looked over at Tonks, swallowed down her fear and bent down in order to lift Tonks so that she could hit the button. The gas seemed to be pouring into the room much faster than before and she blinked burning eyes to see clearly. "Hurry!" she called out, ushering Tonks over with a frantic wave of the hand as he throat started to burn with each breath she took.

Not again. No, not again! The gas was filling up even while she was trying to hop up onto Elliot's shoulders again. But she was coughing and her eyes were watering and it hurt. It hurt to breathe.

Even still, Tonks was trying to do what she needed to do. Even moving that much was burning her lungs as she tried to get a good and proper breath. It wasn't coming. It was like drowning without being under water. A gasp of air and she was shaking her head to try and clear it, but that just made it worse. "I feel.." Like she was going to pass out. Like she was suffocating.

Elliot had brought her hands back to her shirt and was holding it over her nose and mouth. She'd lost her jacket somewhere on the floor and could no longer see it. Her throat was starting to seize up and her lungs struggle for air. She was going to die here.

She could barely make out Tonks just a foot away and she reached out for the other woman. "To--" she started to yell but was cut off by a violent bout of coughing that doubled her over. She sucked in a breath but it felt like her lungs had frozen and all she could smell was the gas in the air. Her heart was beating so fast she thought it might explode in her chest as she struggled to get a breath in.

The lightheaded feeling that had been building intensified as she stepped towards the place where Tonks had been standing a moment ago, but was now a solid wall of gas. The world tilted and Elliot went down hard. She had a second to wonder why - Why Sid? Why her? Why Tonks? - before the world went black.

"Elli--!" Tonks couldn't finish the other woman's name because another fit of coughing had shaken her to the bone. She tried to help when she saw the vague outline of Elliot go down, but by that time the gas was so thick that she couldn't have reached out and actually find her even though she tried.

Her heart was pounding, attempting to make up for the oxygen lost, but really it did no good. She slumped over in the box, crumpling as she passed out.
