Who: Sam Winchester and Shannon Rutherford
What: Reunited and it feels so good
When: Day 12: Evening
Where: Museum
Rating: PG-13
Status: Completed

They'd gotten out - or been freed - Sam wasn't sure which one about twenty minutes ago. He'd made his way through the woods with the others until they came to the edge of town by the cemetery and what was left of the church. Sam didn't look for the new grave he knew was there or the rudimentary cross that he and Shannon had made for Anders with two wooden sticks. Instead he'd headed towards the Museum and the last place he'd seen Shannon.

He knew it was a long shot for her to be there. He'd disappeared from her side hours ago and she had been looking for them with Ianto, and Dean if she'd been able to find him, which meant that she was probably long gone. He also knew that he should be headed in the direction of the smoke at the center of town, but his feet kept moving him towards the museum anyway.

Part of him had wished he'd held onto Gambit's journal so that he could ask her where she was. Or that he'd thought about asking one of the others to get a message to her before he started moving away from them. He approached the rubble of the museum, sighing when he didn't see her. He knew he needed to get towards the center of town. He knew he needed to find her and make sure she was okay. Still, he stopped for a moment. Trying to catch his breath from walking there so quickly and trying to figure out where else she might be.

While Ianto had gone off toward the smell caused by the smoke billowing through the sky, Shannon had stayed where she'd ended up - back behind the museum to cry. They hadn't found Sam and Jack - or the others, for that matter - and Shannon decided that maybe she needed to be alone. So, when Ianto went his way, she decided to go in her own. It was nice to have the comfort of another person's presence, but she didn't think anyone could lift her spirits right then, anyway, so she figured she might as well keep her tears to herself.

Eventually, she could only heave dry sobs and no tears were coming. She had nothing left. Shannon still felt miserable, still wanted to cry, but just...couldn't. It was a horrible feeling...and she knew it already. She felt it when she'd run out of tears for Boone and slipped into numbness.

The smell of the smoke was too much to ignore after a while and Shannon got to her feet again, brushing off her backside and wiping her eyes as she made her way back around to the front of the museum. And then, she stopped. Her heart leapt into her throat and her stomach twisted. Was her mind playing tricks on her, then, or had Sam found his way out...and come home? "Sam?" she tried, swallowing thickly and furrowing her brow, hoping for the best and hating herself for it, just in case.

Sam looked up at the sound of approaching footsteps and felt relief and something else he couldn't quite name right then sweep over him at the sight of Shannon.

She called his name and his worried expression fell away into one of relief as he started moving towards her. "Shannon!" He called out, a smile making it's way across his face.

"Are you okay?"

When Sam looked up in response to his name, Shannon couldn't quite put her finger on the exact feelings that were washing over her. Relief, for sure, was one of them although she couldn't - and didn't exactly bother to try to - identify the others. He called back to her and started toward her, asking if she was okay and Shannon was already ignoring the pain in her side as she picked up her pace and all but ran to him.

It didn't occur to her that she wouldn't be the only one feeling the pain of impact when she did it. It only crossed her mind that all she could think about was being in his arms and letting him know how relieved she was to see him alive. All thoughts of Domeki and the other unfortunate dead were abandoned as she jumped up, wrapping herself around him - arms around his neck with her hands in his hair and legs around his waist crossed at the ankle on the small of his back. Shannon crushed her lips against his and kissed him as though she'd never see him again. She wasn't sure, ten minutes ago, that she ever would.

Without pulling away from him or letting go, Shannon's lips brushed against his after the kiss as she spoke. "I was so scared," she admitted softly, forehead against Sam's and her nose brushing against his as her eyes closed. "I've never been happier to see a person in my life," she added, which was saying an awful lot considering the relief that had swept over her when she'd realized Sam was still alive under all the rubble only two days before.

Sam stumbled back as Shannon launched herself at him, his hands automatically reaching out to grab her and ensure she didn't fall.

His breath hitched slightly at the pain in his shoulder as the muscles strained to hold her, but he didn't have time to say anything and a moment later it didn't really matter because Shannon's mouth was suddenly on his, kissing him.

Sam's grip on her tightened as he steadied and once his shock and surprise wore off he returned the kiss until she broke it. He closed his eyes briefly as she leaned her forehead against his.

"Me either," he said, opening his eyes and pulling back to regard her. "Are you okay?" He asked, searching her eyes. He frowned at himself. Of course she wasn't. None of them were in this place. "I mean, considering?"

Once the kiss was broken and Sam was speaking to her, asking her if she was okay, the pain in her side registered and she realized that his shoulder would likely be aching from having to hold her up. Uncrossing her ankles, she let herself drop back onto her feet, arms still around his neck and body still pressed up against his. "Sorry," she said sheepishly. It was just that she was so happy to see him alive and well. Or well, all things considered.

"I'm okay, now," she said, her eyes meeting his. It wasn't entirely true, but it was true enough. Yes, she was still raw and broken after Domeki's death and she was still kind of thrown for him having gone missing among apparently many others. But, what was important was that the one person left in this place who mattered to her - really, really mattered the most - was right there with her. For that, she rose up on her toes and kissed him again, more tentative and gentle.

Shannon, to her credit, tried to ignore the fluttering in her stomach and the urge to jump back into Sam's arms. If he was feeling whatever it was that she was feeling, standing outside the museum in the twilight was neither the time nor the place to act on it. Chewing her bottom lip, she moved her hands to hold his face, needing to continue to touch him, if for no other reason than to know he was really there. "Sam..." she said quietly. "We're really not safe no matter what we do, are we...?" she asked, brow furrowed slightly.

She wanted Sam to tell her that he would keep her safe; that he would protect her and wouldn't let anything happen to her, but if he said it, she'd know it was a lie. There was nothing he could say in response that would make her feel better. If he lied, she'd know it and if he told the truth, it'd hurt all over again to hear it. "Never mind, don't answer that," she amended. "I'm just glad you're back. Are you okay?"

He felt her shift and slide down him before she was standing in front of him, still holding him close and apologizing. A grin spread across his face as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "It's okay," he said. "I'm happy to see you too."

He let out a small breath of relief when she said she was okay. The look in her eyes made Sam's chest tighten and he felt the sudden urge to be kissing her again. As if she read his mind, she leaned into him for another kiss, this one much slower and gentle. Sam's hands slid up her arms as he kissed her back.

She pulled back and her soft spoken words made Sam's stomach sink. His face softened as he reached up and tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. She told him not to answer before he could even begin to word one and he felt a small and traitorous sense of relief.

"I'm fine," he said, turning his face into her hand. "I'm sorry for leaving you."

Standing in front of Sam with his arms around her waist and their bodies close felt perfect. It was both as if she fit and belonged there and that now that they were holding one another again, he was really and truly there and he was okay. Sam couldn't disappear; he just couldn't. She wouldn't know what to do with herself then. It hurt enough to have the fear of being a curse to those she loved be confirmed with Domeki's death. Losing Sam the same way would tear her apart.

His hands slid up her arms as he returned her kiss and for a second, Shannon had to remind herself that even if they'd made it clear that they cared about one another and were attracted to each other that Sam did not belong to her. She chewed her bottom lip just slightly as he reached up and tucked her hair behind her ear.

But, when Sam apologized for leaving her, Shannon's brow furrowed a little with confusion and she let her hand fall away. He'd left? Or maybe that was just the way he'd said it just then and it didn't mean that at all. "It's okay," she said quietly, looking back up at him with sincerity in her eyes. "All that matters is that you're back." With that, she pulled him into a hug and pressed her face against his shirt.

Sam didn't miss the look that flashed across Shannon's face when he apologized and her quickly shook his head. He opened his mouth to explain that his leaving had been completely involuntary but then it was unnecessary because she said it was okay.

He gave her a tired nod and held her tight as she buried her face in his chest. He thought about the inhaler in his pocket and the way his own breath had hitched in his throat at the realization that Shannon would probably need it if she had some kind of panic attack. Especially after being deserted right after finding another friend's body.

He wanted to give it to her, but he didn't want to let her go long enough to do so. He rubbed her back lightly and realized just how much of his inner panic had died down at seeing her whole and alive again. The last couple of days had gotten him so keyed up that he was worried that the time would come when she may not turn up. He let out a deep breath slowly and then pulled back.

"Jack's okay too," he said realizing that he was being selfish and she might want to know about her other friends. "The Doctor too. Gambit seemed to be hurt, but not too badly."

All Shannon really needed right then was for Sam to hold her; for him to continue to be tangible to her and when he did so without her even so much as having to say a word, Shannon knew that for the first time in as long as she could remember, she was wrapped around his little finger. She'd never say so, of course, but as he rubbed her back gently, she thought it; knew it.

As Sam pulled back, Shannon had to fight her reflex to pull him close again, but then he spoke and she nodded, giving him a small, grateful smile. "And everyone else...?" she prompted instinctively. The Doctor and Jack being all right allowed her to fully relax again. Ianto would be okay, then, as well, she thought. So long as Jack was. Gambit, admittedly, meant much less to her than she'd have liked to admit, but it was good to know that he, too, was all right.

After a short pause, Shannon looked back at the shambles of the museum. "Where do we go now?" she asked softly. "I mean...after..." Shannon's brow furrowed heavily and she looked down. They still needed to bury her friend. She felt as though she should wait for Watanuki, because he'd known Domeki in the real world, but she couldn't just leave his body there, either, broken and empty. She just...couldn't say it out loud.

"They're fine," Sam said when she asked about the others. "All of us are fine." He looked down at her and then lowered his lips to kiss her again. he couldn't stop feeling grateful for the fact that she was fine as well.

Sam sighed when she asked where they should go now, he gave a small shake of the head. "Back to the barn?' He asked, knowing that chances were he had another grave to dig before they could do so. "Where do you want to go?" He asked, reaching down for her hand. "We can go wherever you want."

The smoke from before caught his eye in the sky. If there was anywhere left to go, that was.

Relief washed over her when Sam said that everyone was fine. No more deaths. Thank God for small favors. Her fingers threaded into his hair again as he kissed her and when he pulled away, her hand slid down the back of his head and back before falling away back to her side.

"No," she said, looking down. "Not there; everyone's there." He took her hand and asked where she wanted to go and for a moment, Shannon didn't answer. She looked over her shoulder and her mouth drew down into a frown. "Home," she whispered, knowing that she couldn't; even the home she'd built for herself in this place was no longer an option. Looking back at him, she shrugged. "We can go back behind the gym, if you want. So you can be close to Dean and Andy," she replied. "Whatever you want. I don't care. The only place I want to be, I can't be, so..." she admitted, her voice trailing off.

With a sigh, she pulled away and turned from Sam to look back at the museum, wiping her eyes and sniffing out of reflex. "Let's just get this over with," she said in a low voice, eyes drifting back to where she knew Domeki's body was lying just out of sight.
