She had hung there a second, that mental inventory of her shoulder and her head and her back taking a moment. She'd firmed up her feet and she felt a reassuring hand on the small of her back. Andy wasn't going to let her fall. Thank God.
They walked at a slow pace at first and Andy let her hold on to him. She'd been sort of held by Dean before; but, she couldn't hold on, really. She didn't want to hurt him. She didn't remember anything from Elliot's notes that would indicate her head on his shoulder would cause Andy pain. So, she kept it there until she had to separate to make it through the rubble. Careful steps carried her over and she was as patient as she could stand with Andy. She wasn't going to let him fall, either.
"C'mon," he said quietly, as if he could read her mind. It didn't occur to her that perhaps she looked just as broken on the outside as she felt on the inside. Had she realized perhaps she would have tried to make it all just a little bit better.
It was quiet where they wound up, in the back of the gym. The wind had picked up and it tossed around Lexie's hair, blowing it into her eyes. She didn't care, though, because even as she stood there quite still it was fairly obvious that there was a quiet start of a sob building up in her shoulders. As still as she tried to keep them her muscles moved involuntarily, she had finally broken down.
"I'm sorry, Andy," she said, unlinking her arm and reaching up to paw at her eyes. He didn't deserve to see her like this. He was just so happy and she was crying all over the place. "I feel so stupid," she blurted because she did.
