With These Hands
Who: Edward and Kim! And open to Kaylee later, if she wants to repair his leg for him? ^^
When: 1:00 AM, Day 11
Where: The Gym while Edward waits patiently for his leg to get reattached.
What: Reunion!
Rating: PG for now
Status: Active

Edward was a sweet, patient thing. He lay quietly, as Gambit had instructed him, with his detached leg tucked safely under his cot, for someone to come and reattach his leg, but he was well aware that it might be a while. Since he had seen what kind of shape others were in, like Watanuki (who had had a balcony come down on him), and a man with two broken arms, and another who was deliriously talking about non-parasitic Platyhelminthes due to the generous amounts of morphine distracting him from a shovel in his side. He listened to that man's soft mumbling for awhile, wondering why the inventor had never told him any of those interesting things about flatworms. They would have been scary, if they weren't so small!

Things did get dull, though. Since Edward didn't sleep, he resigned himself to simply staring at what remained of the ceiling in the gym, and the stars that were visible where sky peeked through.

Kim tried to be sweet and patient, really she did, but she hurt all over--too much to sleep, and with the groans and quiet weeping of the other 'patients' in the pseudo-hospital, she wouldn't have been able to rest even if she hadn't been in a lot of pain. She'd tried to pick some of the glass out of her good arm earlier, which had been a stupid idea since she'd had to do it with her teeth, which only aggravated the large gaping gash on her cheek. Finally one of the doctors had noticed her struggles to take care of herself and come over with a needle and thread to sew up her face, remove the glass with tweezers and set her arm before putting it in a sling. Kim wasn't ashamed to admit that she had screamed like a banshee when she felt her bones grind against each other before fainting again.

Now she sat hunched in on herself, wishing she had some sort of painkiller or company or anything really to keep the hurt at bay, rocking slowly and casting her gaze around the gym in between the occasional coughing fit. That was when she'd spotted something--or rather, someone--new and couldn't rip her eyes away. Someone who couldn't possibly be here. Assuredly, she was hallucinating his presence on that cot over there. Assuredly, her poor brain was conjuring up the only man she'd really ever loved to comfort her in her hour of need. She felt tears start to track down her dusty face, and she swallowed hard. Oh, how she missed him, suddenly and with a deep sharp ache that succeeded in distracting her from her physical hurts. She'd almost called out his name, she realized, the syllables still waiting behind her lips for release she couldn't give them.

Edward...

There was a certain sensation that accompanied being stared at. Even Edward still felt it, though he was often the object of staring... he glanced at the man who was still mumbling deliriously, but his eyes were closed... and that at a girl across from him, who was crying and staring at the wall. He turned his head, and his previously steady breath caught in his throat when he saw her.

There were many pretty blond girls in the world, but Edward would have recognized Kim anywhere. It didn't even register, immediately, that she was injured badly and in pain. All he saw was her face, and her long hair, and the brown eyes he had missed so much for (though he hadn't been counting) over fifty years.

He jumped up, landing on his one foot but crumpling to a heap when he forgot, yet again, that his other one was lying immobile under his cot. It was a lot like the first time they had met, when he thought about it... he had seen her and ended up on the floor. But he could still talk, in this situation, unlike that one, and he planned to take full advantage of that ability.

"KIM!"

Yes, the reason for Kim's staring was quite different than the typical looks she knew Edward had received during his time in Suburbia. This staring was incredulous but filled with longing and heartache, and the guilt of someone who had pushed another loved one away for "their own good" and lived to regret it. Every day she missed him, and though she visited home on all the major holidays, she was distracted, often staring at the castle atop the mountain and wondering how Edward was doing up there...what he was sculpting now...if he'd forgotten her already, as well he might have. If he was alright. If he was lonely. She tried hard not to ask herself those questions, because if he wasn't alright--what if it was her fault? What if--so mostly she tried not to think about him, and how life had lost some of its color since she'd said goodbye to him.

But she was thinking of it now--how could she avoid it, when the hallucination-Edward was staring right back at her and then moving toward her--falling, too, and something was wrong there. He was clumsy, but unless he was drunk on her dad's cheap booze, Edward wasn't that clumsy. Kim' eyes widened half out of their sockets when he called her name. God, but this hallucination was vivid. And oh, how she wanted to believe that he remembered her. Knowing how stupid she would feel when she reached him and he disappeared beneath her fingertips, Kim moved from her sitting position and determinedly headed toward him anyway. It would be worth it, just to see his face again, the face she'd grown to love in such a short time.

"Edward?" She finally let the word slip past her lips. "EDWARD?" She broke into a skidding run, dropping to her knees next to him, covering her mouth with her good hand. Oh god. Oh my god. Oh my god please let this be real. It was a selfish prayer, and she knew it. But she didn't care. With a hand that was shaking from a sudden adrenaline rush, she reached trembling fingers toward his face, hardly daring to touch him, even now.

Though Kim had, essentially, abandoned Edward for a noble cause, he had never thought of it that way. In his heart and mind, she might have decided to come back at any day, and he patiently awaited that day and sculpted her image on the days in between.

As she approached him, he was overwhelmed by happiness. Today, he'd been convinced that Vas Captio was "not a nice place at all," but now he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was heaven.

He had fifty years worth of scars all over his face, and one night's worth of emotional ones that had softened over all that time. His innocence, even after all this time, was still pristine.

"You came back? I knew you'd come back!" he furrowed his brow, his ecstasy slightly dampened when he saw that Kim's arm had been injured. "Are you OK...? He wanted to hold her, but he'd restrain himself if it meant that he would hurt her.

If Kim had known that Edward was waiting for her return, if she had known that "goodbye" wasn't permanent for him--after all, he hadn't quite understood the inventor's death, so it was clear that his perception of loss was altered from many others'--she would have undoubtedly wavered in her resolve not to visit him again. For him it had been fifty years. For her it had been only two, but the impossibility of the reunion would not in any way have diminished its significance to Kim, even had she been aware of it.

Edward had scratched himself again since last she had seen him, although the white lines looked healed over, so perhaps he had learned not to touch his face over time. Bringing her hand to his cheek, a tiny incredulous smile began to blossom over her face--a bad idea, given her stitches, but she couldn't help it. Edward was still here. He was real.

"I always wanted to come back," she said honestly, unable to believe what was happening to her, yet unable to deny it. Suddenly, the earthquake, the kidnapping, her injuries--all seemed worthwhile, if they had brought her closer to him. Not wanting to worry him, she shrugged off her arm difficulties, deflecting in a murmur, "they're just scratches. Are you--are you okay, Edward? You went down pretty hard a minute ago."

It was true that Edward had gotten better about not scratching his face, but as the whole of Vas Captio had learned to their cost, it was very difficult to maintain accident-free track records during earthquakes. Personally, he was thrilled that he hadn't cut anyone else, and considered that yesterday's miracle.

The powers that be were generous, he thought happily, because he had been given another miracle, today. Kim was here. She looked just the way he remembered her, except her arm and face... worried, he reached toward her stitched cheek, but remembered that he couldn't do that and withdrew in time.

"I'm OK... it's just my leg," Edward reassured, with a bright smile, staring at Kim as if desperate to sear her image into his memory all over again. "It fell off, so I'm waiting for someone to put it back on. I always wanted you to come back. I waited every day," he said, his desire to be close to her at frustrating odds with both their injuries.

Kim was not afraid. Not of Edward, certainly, or of anything his blades could do to her. She trusted him implicitly and with all her heart. Others had hurt her in the past. Jim--well, she tried not to think about Jim. But when Edward's "fingers" reached toward her stitches, she didn't jerk back or move in startlement or fear of injury. The last time he'd accidentally cut her, it hadn't even hurt. And sure enough, the blades withdrew, and her trust was rewarded, as she had been sure it would be all along.

"Your leg...fell off?" Kim said, uncomprehending, his happy attitude completely contradicting the words he'd just spoken. Looking down at his torso, she saw that a limb was indeed missing from Edward's form, but that--bafflingly--there seemed to be no blood, no bone, nothing broken. Her eyes grew wide. "Edward...normally, when people's legs fall off, they can't go back on again. Are you sure that's what you're waiting for?" Unlike most people, she wasn't trying to talk down to him with the false patience of an adult coddling a child. Edward's mind was sound, even if his thinking was unconventional. She just wanted to make sure that she understood.

"I didn't know...how to visit you...without putting you in danger," she confessed, her hand straying up to his mess of hair. "But every time it snowed...I wondered what you were making."

The trust was mutual. Edward knew how fragile Kim was, and that she would never let him hurt her. She was bright and sensible where he succumbed to flights of fancy, and he could rely on her very real vulnerability to gently keep him from doing anything irreversible.

He nodded to affirm the fact that it had, indeed, fallen off, glancing down at the black, leather-clad stump. "Yes... all gone, see? But it's OK, I still have it, and it's easy. Father put them on me once, I think that someone else could do it again!" He was unfalteringly optimistic, even though he was missing a limb, because he knew that there was always a way to fix things. Wasn't Kim breathing proof of that? She'd fixed his sadness!

"I made lots of things. I saw beautiful things that inspired me." He didn't have to say it, by any means, but it was clear that in his eyes, Kim had been the most beautiful and inspiring of everything he had seen in Suburbia.

"I hope you're right," Kim agreed. "Wait--you were awake while your dad put your legs on?" That sentence felt so weird to say. "You're kind of incredible, Edward. You have skin and everything...but your leg fell off and you're not bleeding...does it hurt?" Kim hoped it didn't. Edward in pain was such a heartbreaking sight that it made her want to cry. She wouldn't be able to stand it if Edward was really hurt. She would have to find one of the doctors and demand--albeit very politely--that they put his leg back on at once, if that was the case.

"Do you ever take this suit off?" She wondered aloud. It was probably a silly question, because with all the buckles and straps, it would be pretty impossible for him to do so. Kim wondered, too, if he ever wanted to take it off, or wear something else. Or if the suit was what was holding his body together. Now there was an alarming thought.

"Then...it was worth it?" She hesitated, then forged ahead, gently working through the tangles in his unruly hair with her good hand. He didn't feel like a doll. He felt real. "Coming to visit us, I mean. Was it worth it? Because you were inspired?"

"Of course I was awake," Edawrd said, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. "He waited until I had learned all about poetry and literature and art, so I wouldn't get bored and walk away." How well Edward could remember not being able to move anything except his face and his hands during the early stages of his cognitive development. That had been very interesting. "No! No, it doesn't hurt. It's missing, but it's not painful. I'm OK," he assured her, smiling. But it was clearly different with Kim's arm. "You're broken?" he asked quietly, staring at the sling her arm was currently held in.

The buckles and straps did make removing the suit impossible for Edward. He had never tried, and there was the thought that the tight leather served like skin, keeping his insides inside of him. Even Edward wasn't quite sure if that was the case... obviously, he couldn't feel through the leather, but he had worn it for so long that it might as well have been his skin. "No...I can't..." Edward said, shaking his head slowly back and forth. "It protects me, but it's hard to move, sometimes..."

He sat up straighter when Kim asked him if it was worth it to come down to Suburbia. Eyes shining, filled with knowledge that had not been there before his introduction to society, he nodded.

Kaylee was muzzy headed, but unable to sleep. Concussions come with all sorts of perks like that, along with a pounding headache. Although, she could happily announce that she was no longer a glass porcupine, the shards removed from her back. Since medicine was at a premium, she had only agreed to take some light ibuprofen.

Someone had said that a man, his leg had come off, but that he was more like a Bot. With nothing else she could do with just this bone deep tiredness but a mixture of not wanting to, and not being able to sleep, Kaylee went to find the strange man/bot. It had been the one who had been quite sweet in the journals, she remembered, before that lapse in her memory of the last two days.

"Edward?" she called, spotting a pale man with dark wild hair and a thin, young woman perhaps a few years younger than her, clutching him.

"Oh!" Kim said, a small smile lighting up the good side of her face (she had remembered, this time, that she couldn't move the stitches without pain, so the smile ended up as more of a smirk) as she pictured Edward being forced to sit through hours of etiquette lessons and being taught all about the fine arts, unable to leave or move. That would have been an intelligent tactic to use on her peers in university, she thought, although a bit impractical, since their legs didn't come off easily. "I'd love to hear about that some time." And really, truly, she would. If Edward was willing to tell her anything about his mysterious past, it would bring her joy. "I'm glad you're okay. And I'm fine, mostly. I'll heal. I'm not permanently broken," she assured him, squeezing his shoulder with her good hand.

She looked thoughtful when he mentioned that the suit was sometimes difficult to be mobile in, and eventually offered, "if you ever want to try wearing something else, not just over the suit, let me know. I'm sure we could find something for you." And she was glad, so glad, that Edward had found the whole experience worth it, and not traumatic, despite its awful end.

"Me, too-" she began, a bit shyly. "I--" Cut short by the young woman calling Edward, Kim turned toward her, a fleeting, incoherent pain-addled thought crossing her mind: what if Edward found someone else? What if she's--? But then, he would have had the right to do that. Kim had left, after all.

"Over here," she called, looking up at Kaylee. "Can you...can you fix him?" Kim would give anything if this woman could help Edward. It was almost terrifying, how overwhelming and how deep her feelings were for him.
