WHO: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones & Open [if a doctor wants to swing by]
WHAT: The end of the day, Jack needs a break from Hero-duty.
WHEN: 22:00
WHERE: The Gym
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Active

Walking through town, helping as many as he could, by the end of the night, Jack had reached the point of exhaustion. He slowly walked through the darkened town, once more getting the strange feeling he had while with Gambit. Even before the earthquake there had been an odd feeling about this place, now, with the silence, Jack was worried. If this had been Cardiff, he would have shaken it off, helped who he could and went back to the Hub to 'sleep' it off.

But here? It was a veritable unknown. There was no tech to take readings, no way of knowing what was coming next. At least in the Hub, they had some sort of warning when something was about to happen when the Rift monitor went off. Here? There weren't even sirens to let them know a quake was coming. What was next? Typhoon? Tornado?

He looked up at the dark sky, knowing the glass cage was above and felt like a caged animal, placed somewhere to be observed. Jack breathed in, lowering his head and headed in the direction of the gym. Right now, he wanted nothing more than to see Ianto. Between the conversations with the Insider and hearing Gray's voice in the void, it was safe to say that Jack wasn't on his game. He'd been able to distract himself playing hero, but no longer. Now, all Jack had were his thoughts. It was strange feeling like he had to depend on someone -- Jack was the strong one. Not weak.

Well, everyone could have an off-day, right?

Hands shoved deep into his pockets, he made his way inside the rubble of the gym, glancing at the injured parties and hoping the doctors were handling things. He'd be around to help, but right now, Jack needed time to himself. And that meant finding Ianto.

Ianto had spent time drifting around, offering a bit of comfort (which really wasn't much like the stoic teaboy) and assisting doctors where he could. He knew first aid, at the least, and could administer drugs if necessary. But eventually the ache in his arm and head forced Nurse Jones back to his bed where he sat, paging through his journal while there was still light enough to do it.

Now there were only glimmers here and there, beams from the torches the doctors had and reflected moonlight off bits of metal. He never did get a chance to make his lamps, he reflected. Ianto just sat, watching restless people try to sleep in spite of all their fears. As frightening as this place had been, now it was so much worse.

When another figure moved through the dark, Ianto watched it for a while, trying to discern the identity from the way it moved. He was a bit jumpy, and hopefully understandably so. Dispite his cavalier words to their mysterious watcher, the idea of the creature coming to call was a chilling one. It was like meeting a terrorist. All he wanted to do was hit them in the face, hard. He just hoped he'd recognize the watcher.

But this figure, moving with grace and exhaustion, Ianto knew very well. "Jack," he called quietly, as not to disturb the sleeping people round him. At least, he figured Jack was looking for him. If for nothing else than an update. He hoped like hell it was for more than an update.

Jack was in deed looking for Ianto, trying to pick his way through the carnage in the gym without waking anyone. It was proving to be a harder task than he originally intended it to be. The sun had set long ago, making it increasingly hard to see who was who. Jack flipped open the cover of his plastic wrist strap, about to start using the little blue torch contained within he'd discovered the other day when he heard those Welsh vowels ring out from behind.

Ianto was still here and Ianto was still fine and that was all that mattered.

He made his way towards the sound of the voice, finally making out Ianto when he was close enough. Jack threaded his fingers through Ianto's hair, lowering his head to kiss the other man's forehead. "How are you feeling?" he asked softly, pulling a nearby cot closer and settling down on the edge.

At the little kiss and the touch through his hair, Ianto sighed a little and relaxed marginally. He hadn't realized he'd been that tense, knowing Jack was out and about in the mess that was their cage. Having him here made him feel better. Oddly, it wasn't because he, Ianto, was protected now. It was more that he could keep an eye on Jack and protect him. Odd little man.

"Better. Least my head is. I'm told that the arm's fractured but not badly. More than that, no one knows. I think everyone's doing alright physically. Mentally? I don't know. The game's changed." The rules were different now and Ianto wondered at them. There had to be a way to anticipate things around here. To win. Since it was obviously a game to the Insider.

"What about you? How're you holding up?" And he didn't mean physically.

Knowing how they both were in the face of any dangerous situation, Jack knew Ianto had to be as tense as he was. Jack flicked his glance towards the arm and sighed, wondering if he had been a bit quicker if Ianto would have gotten off easier. Sighing, Jack clasped his hands in front of him, nails digging into the backs of his hands. Taking care of his team -- even if it was a team of one right now, that was Jack's role.

Right now, he never felt more helpless.

"The game changed. Weather being at their whims was one thing, but to deliberately hurt captives? It's something else entirely." Jack had flashes to his own past, the creatures that had invaded his homeland and quickly suppressed it. "I don't know if there is a way to anticipate. They control everything so anything that happens would be at a whim."

Jack shrugged, forcing a smile to his face. "Me? Never better. Running off and saving people? I'm in my glory." There was, however, a look on his face that belied Jack's words.

Ianto reached for Jack's hands, one by one peeling his fingers and starting up a one handed sort of massage, trying to will Jack to relax by touch alone. More than anything, he wanted to be able to strip Jack down and give him a real massage, but that'd have to wait until they could get someplace a bit more private.

"Good, then you don't mind staying here for a bit," he said, speaking to the look on Jack's face instead of what came out of his mouth. "Because bugger all if I can sleep what with all the noise." Which was entirely untrue, but Ianto wasn't going to admit that the real reason was nightmares and pain. He was refusing painkillers, which was typical for the man. But then, he didn't think he warranted morphine. Just paracetamol.

"I could use the company." His fingers tightened briefly.

Though his hands were firmly clasped together, Jack still allowed for his hands to be moved apart, gaze fixed on the dirty floor as Ianto rubbed one hand and then the other. The bit of contact was a relief, though Jack would never admit it. He was bone-weary tired, a feeling he didn't often have, and wanted nothing more than to find a cot and sleep for a couple hours.

"No, I don't mind staying," Jack replied, forcing a half-hearted smile to his face. Ianto could always read him so well, even when Jack was trying to play the big man on campus, Ianto could read his motives better than anyone else. "Well, maybe should see if you can get something from one of the Doctors. It'll help you sleep I'm sure."

Jack looked down at their intertwined hands and smiled softly. "You have the company, Ianto." Rising, he settled himself on the floor by Ianto's make-shift cot, his chin resting on the other man's knee; the simplicity of their touch speaking volumes for the way Jack was feeling at the present.

Oh, it had to be bad for Jack to be sitting like this. Ianto's hand moved from their hands to Jack's face, tugging a little at still crazy and spikey hair. It was much like the Doctor's hair, he mused. It seemed to have a life of it's own. Fingertips trailed down Jack's nose, across his eyelids, touching in an intimate but publicly acceptable way. "I'm sure it would help me sleep, but all I want is paracetamol and we don't have it. I'd rather not take morphine for aches. Though, when everything's a bit more secure, I may attempt to find a decent scotch and entertain everyone with drunken Ianto antics."

Eventually, Ianto's hand ended up on the back of Jack's neck, fingering the soft hair that lay there and rubbing lightly at tense muscles. "Thank you," he said softly. "The company means a good deal to me."

Jack's eyes drooped, closing the moment Ianto's fingers began to caress his face. He tilted his head enough to lean into his touch, letting himself relax with his lover. Intimate enough for now, it was these times when Jack realised how their relationship had changed. Since when did a simple touch mean so much, serve to relax him so? Didn't matter, but it did and Jack was going to take the comfort. At least with Ianto, Jack didn't always have to play the hero -- he could actually show those human failings he claimed not to have.

"In that case, I should find some scotch post haste," Jack said with a chuckle. "I shouldn't be the only one here to ever see you in a drunken state. Though, without Owen, I don't think it's a proper drinking contest."

Just as Shannon had earlier, Jack sighed feeling the hand on the back of his neck. God, was he this much of a sucker when it came to touches like these? Apparently so. "Think an earthquake is going to keep me from you?" Jack asked softly. "Daleks couldn't. They'll have to try a bit harder." Empty words, maybe, but he needed to lash out at someone and the unnamed Powers were the only target he had.

Ianto's fingers tugged teasingly on a bit of Jack's hair before going back to sifting through it. "Careful, there, Captain. You're getting sentimental." Dangerously so. Though Ianto's voice was warm and easy with amusement and something else at Jack's words. At his tone, more than the words.

"But it could be amusing for everyone," he continued easily. "A sort of drunken revelry. Though the last time I got truly soussed, I kept trying to stick things down my trousers." Bottles, napkins, pens, mobiles. In the morning, he couldn't figure out why and just chalked it up to one of those stupid things that made perfect sense at the time. And for all that Ianto's voice kept going on, matter of fact and tinged with amusement as it usually was, his fingers were gentle and said entirely different things than his mouth.

Jack made a contented noise in the back of his throat between the gentle hair tugging and the fingers lightly rubbing his scalp. With each deep breath, he could feel the tension leaving him, turning his head just enough so that cheek and not chin rested on Ianto's knee. He said nothing about the sentimentality, merely ignored it in the hopes that it would go away and they'd forget he said anything to begin with.

"Sticking things in your trousers and not even having any fun with what went down there," Jack replied with a chuckle. "I think Owen kept the CCTV footage just for bribery purposes." Jack's own hand slid up Ianto's trouser leg, rubbing the back of his calf in counterpoint to the hands in his hair.

Watching Jack relax strangely made Ianto feel all that much more relaxed. Maybe it was that they could unravel round one another without any of the fall out that'd happen round others. Maybe it was just sentimentality and Ianto would just have to live with it. "I think you kept the CCTV footage for amusement's sake. Didn't your mobile go down my trousers?"

Jostling himself a little, Ianto leaned forward, bending himself nearly in two, just to rub the tip of his snub nose against Jack's cheek. "When's the last time you slept, Jack? I know you don't need much, but you do need some." Running on empty wasn't going to do much for anyone except breed desperation.

With every light caress, Jack could feel his weary muscles beginning to relax in varying degrees. This was what he needed though, just time with Ianto. He closed his eyes, letting his own hands work by feel, enjoying the sensation of Ianto's skin under his fingers. It would have to do for now, wouldn't it? "My mobile did go down your trousers. And I had quite the time getting it back." Jack grinned. "THank god it was set on vibrate that I could keep calling it..."

Yes, Jack could be a prick when he wanted to be.

Jack's breath hitched the moment Ianto's nose nuzzled the side of his face. He ignored the nagging voice that screamed domesticity and just enjoyed the touches between them. "Last I slept? The morning you and I woke up with Shannon. But that was a brief nap... not actual sleep." Jack opened his eyes, looking up at Ianto. "Is that concern I spy?" he asked, lips brushing Ianto's cheek.

"It could be concern. It's a shy thing, concern. Hides like a rabbit sometimes." He murmured it right into Jack's skin, soft and sweet and only meant for the two of them. The only trouble was that he couldn't hold this pose for very long. Eventually he'd have to straighten. Not just yet, though.

"Stay with me and nap a bit? I'll stick things down my trousers to entertain you till you drop off. You can't call them, but it could be amusing." He was foggy on details, but he seemed to remember asking Jack to call by the end of the night. Just remembering it made him smile. That was a good night. It was a memory to hold on to, even if it was him being ridiculous.

Ianto's breath, hot against his own skin, did much by way of putting Jack's mind at ease. "It did. Though I think you were keeping it hidden just so I'd have to look and explore to find it." Jack chuckled softly, lifting his head so Ianto could straighten up. Jack was the one who should be doing the bending as the uninjured party.

"Your wish..." Jack tugged on Ianto's trouser leg, his other hand reaching for a pillow and a blanket. "I doubt a cot will hold us both. And, really, there's only one thing you should be shoving down your trousers, and unfortunately there's too many people around right now." Jack cleared his throat, arranging the pillow behind his head and tugging Ianto down and into his arms as carefully as he could so the fractured arm wasn't jostled. "Shame there aren't mobiles around here. Wouldn't mind playing a game of 'hide the mobile' right about now."

"I think the cot would crumble under our weight," he agreed, though this couldn't have been good for Jack's back. Ianto, though, didn't complain. He simply came along and lay himself carefully, so that his broken arm was laying on top of Jack's chest. Safely out of the way. A moment later and he was breathing out a sigh against Jack's shoulder and letting himself relax.

"You like hide and seek. Seek the concern. Seek the mobile. Seek Ianto..." His eyes closed, though he didn't fall asleep just yet. You could tell by the little smile he wore. "Comfortable?"

"If it crumbles under our weight, neither of us are getting the exercise we should," Jack replied with a chuckle. Still, he made himself comfortable on the floor ignoring the way his back protested under the uneven floor, knowing it would be better for Ianto and his injuries to have a more flat surface.

Jack gently rubbed Ianto's back with his free hand, his other propped up behind his head to work as a make-shift pillow for the time being. "For the record, I don't cheat when it comes to hide and seek. I can do quite well on my own." Even if Jack's idea of hiding was keeping as much of his body visible during the hiding process. "I am. How's your arm?" Yes, asking about an injury was equivalent to asking after the weather.

Silly man. There was a perfectly useable pillow up on the cot along with a blanket that could be bundled up, if more pillowing was needed. Still, Jack needed to do silly things like this sometimes, Ianto reckoned. It had something to do with the whole hero process. It made sensible fly out of the window. "Alright, maybe it wouldn't crumble. It'd buckle a bit, though." And for the record, Ianto was lighter than when he first arrived. But then, the diet here wasn't so good.

"My arm?" One of Ianto's eyes opened to regard Jack a bit. "Do you know ... I think it might be broken." He deserved to be swatted for that one and knew it, chuckling very softly.

He was not silly -- he was a bright, charming and intelligent captain. He simply chose not to show it at this point in time. "Crumble... buckle... I'm not sure there's really much difference in the two occurring," Jack reasoned, hand running absently along Ianto's back, moving up to run through his hair then back down again.

"I'm aware of that," Jack replied with an exaggerated roll of his eyes. "My question more dealt with how is it feeling at this point in time, oh master of the obvious."

"Well," he said, attempting to distract Jack from worry about his arm. He didn't want to answer that. "I think crumbling is worse. Buckling is only a bit of it bending. Crumbling is the whole thing coming to the ground."

Frankly, Ianto ached. But they didn't have anything he'd be willing to take for pain so there wasn't much they could really do, was there? The fingers of his bandaged arm tapped a rhythm on Jack's chest while Ianto focused on breathing and relaxing.
