Day 10: Early Morning
Who: Sarah Jane Smith, Jack Harkness
What: reunion!
Where: museum
When: Day 10, early morning (let's say 8?)
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

Well, the museum was certainly not the most comfortable place Sarah Jane had slept, but it felt more secure than the carnival where she'd spent her first night. She could have been here for her first night as well - the Doctor had certainly offered - but she'd wanted to explore, and lost track of time, and didn't feel she should be walking across town after dark alone. It was far more comfortable than the carnival as well. The hard floor was at least able to be swept free of dirt and rocks. Sarah found that she couldn't sleep much past daybreak here, which was in keeping with her usual routine at home. And, being Sarah Jane, she couldn't keep still for long in the morning either. She'd munched on the remaining bits of venison she'd had from the day before, then decided to wander the museum.

She hadn't gone far before she spied a familiar figure in one of the exhibit rooms. She grinned, despite their circumstances. "Captain Harkness?" she said, stepping into the room. The Doctor had said he was here, but this was the first she'd seen of him.

Left to his own devices for the morning, Jack took the opportunity to wander around the museum and do a bit of exploring. He hadn't quite been keeping to the room he shared with Ianto, but Jack hadn't been his typical exploring self either. And so, alone, he decided it was time to trek out and take a look at the museum. Wasn't always a place he enjoyed, the reminder of so many things being eternal -- and one day he could be among them. Come see the immortal man, five pence a pop. Wouldn't be the first time he was on display.

Hands shoved deep into the pockets of his coat, he rocked back on his heels and observed the exhibits. Until he heard that all-too familiar voice ring out. Grinning, Jack turned around, his smile widening if possible when he spied Sarah standing at the doorway. "Well, well, well, if it isn't Sarah Jane Smith. As I live and breathe!" He said, adopting a horrible southern American accent.

Sarah managed a chuckle at the bad accent. The captain did have a flair for the dramatics. She took a step into the room, hand extended to shake Jack's, but halfway to him, she changed her mind and opened both arms to wrap him in a friendly hug. True, she'd only met him briefly, but there were some things that instantly bonded Sarah to a person. Knowing the Doctor was one of them. Defeating the Daleks was another.

"It's so good to see you," she said. "Although I could wish for better circumstances. Just once, I'd like to have a reunion that didn't involve aliens or kidnappings. Just a trip out for tea, or something normal."

Flair for the dramatic, that was Jack to a tee. Grinning as she approached, he took a few steps towards her to meet the woman half-way. The handshake would have been expected, but the hug was much nicer. Laughing in spite of himself, Jack wrapped his arms around Sarah and pulled her into a bone crushing hug. Didn't matter if their meeting had been brief, they had saved the world together, had they not?

"Oh I don't know, sometimes it's the best time to run into a bloke," Jack replied with a wink. "Dashing hero, beautiful damsel in distress -- distress, I said, not 'in a dress'." Bad joke, but Jack wasn't ashamed to make the pun. "Shame there isn't anything resembling tea around. Or coffee for that matter. I'd take you out for a cup of coffee -- a bright spot in the middle of the dark and kidnappings." He dropped an arm around her shoulder and tugged her in close. "How've you been? Keeping out of trouble?"

Sarah laughed as well as she returned the hug with equal force. Again, knowing there were people here she trusted made her feel safe, in spite of the circumstances. Whoever had brought them all here was either a fool or ignorant. The lot of them together had saved the world, more than once. There was nothing they couldn't do together.

"Damsel in distress?" Sarah said, a touch of mock hurt in her voice. "I've never been a proper damsel in distress." She laughed again, shaking her head at Jack's bad pun. Light humour did wonders for her spirits. Although, no tea, no coffee...whoever had dropped them here was just asking for trouble.

"For the most part," she said. "Trouble has a habit of finding me." She grinned. "But it's been rather quiet for the last few days, since we made it home." She gave Jack a knowing look. "And you? Trouble seems to find you lot more than it does me."

In his estimation, there weren't many people he wanted to get stuck in some deserted, abandoned town where strange things kept happening. With those who were here, however, Jack couldn't have been happier. With great reluctance, he finally pulled back from Sarah, though kept a hand on her arm to keep that contact. So many of their friends were here, so where was Gwen or Rose? Part of him hoped they would stay far away from this place, and another part of him wanted them near. Quite the conundrum.

"Could always pretend," Jack said, waggling his eyebrows. "Of the two of us, I think you're most suited for wearing a dress, but I suppose the roles could be reversed just this once." He struck a rather feminine pose, sticking a hip out. "Just so long as it's red."

Chuckling, Jack nodded his agreement. "Keep saying trouble's my middle name but no one seems to believe me either. Wish I could say it was quiet for us, but no rest for the Torchwood types. If it's not Weevils it's a time rift and if it's not a time rift it's a wonderful little beetle that crawled through the phone lines. Gave a whole new meaning to the phrase 'bugging' phone lines."

Sarah let out a full on laugh as Jack struck his pose. "We'll have to rummage through that thrift shop and see what we can find," she said, shaking her head in amusement. Oh, it was good to have a friend around! Between Jack and the Doctor, she'd never lose her spirits here. Which meant they'd all get out sooner.

"Beetle in the phone lines," Sarah Jane echoed, imagining what that must have been like. That was a new one for her. Mr. Smith hadn't mentioned it, so Sarah assumed it was a problem local to Cardiff. "Not sure if that's better or worse than a tyrannosaurus in central London."

Thinking of the dinosaurs reminded her of what she'd wanted to ask Jack about when she saw him. "The Doctor's not from the same point in time as we are," she said, her expression turning more serious. "He doesn't know what's coming, does he?" From what little she actually comprehended about time travel, it would break a law of time if he did...something about Blinovitch or Blagovitch, or something. It had been years since she'd had to think of those things.

"I'll let you buy me something there only if you promise it'll match my eyes," Jack said, barely managing to hide a grin. Aw, what the hell, he let his laughter ring out to match Sarah's, glad for this release of the tension he'd been carrying. Nothing like being stuck god knows where and having friends about. Apparently the Powers that Be had missed that memo when it came to Jack: never drop him somewhere with those he's been through hell with. They'll accompmlish anything in the end. Even escape.

Jack shuddered. "Worst was when it was a landline and a couple crawled out of the ear pieces. Mobiles had been a bit trickier to deal with, in all honesty." Jack lifted an eyebrow. "Tyrannosaurus? I wonder if that's from the same time when Ianto found Myfanwy. Our own personal mascot at the Hub: pterodactyl."

Her question caught him off guard and Jack drew his lips into a thin line. There was an assumption there that Jack knew what was coming, knew the Daleks would attempt to steal Earth and... everything else that came with it. Shoving his hands into his trouser pockets, Jack rocked back onto his heels. If he said something and it wasn't what she was referring to, it'd screw with timelines. Was it possible something else had happened that would have drawn all the Doctor's companions together once more? Taking a gamble and going with the Dalek scenario, Jack shook his head. "He doesn't. Myself and Ianto -- the one who was with me in the Hub -- we three are the only ones that know. And I can't tell him what's coming and it's killing me."

Sarah Jane blinked at Jack. "You have a pterodactyl? How long has it been there?" Operation: Golden Age had been years ago. The Doctor had been very different then, and so had she, although her change wasn't quite as dramatic. "If he's left over from when the tyrannosaurus went through London, he's been very good at hiding. It must have been at least thirty years back, perhaps nearly forty." She looked at him curiously. "Surely someone in your lot would have heard of it. The Brigadier's story wasn't good enough to escape notice by people in the know." She still wasn't quite sure how he'd managed to spin that particular episode, considering the city had been evacuated.

Sarah shut her eyes a moment as Jack confirmed what she hadn't wanted to accept. "I thought as much when he mentioned Donna and a mauve alert, and didn't know I had a son." Her eyes widened. "I hope I haven't mucked it up too badly for telling him about Luke." She considered Jack's words a moment. "Hang on, does that mean Martha isn't from our time either?" She didn't want to give up hope that the other woman was still here, somewhere, and still okay. That body she'd found with GLaDOS when they'd first arrived couldn't have been Martha's. It just couldn't.

How long had it been there? That was quite the easy question. "Little over two years," Jack replied. "One of my operatives found it and he used it as a bit of leverage to get a job with me. Have to say it worked." Jack rubbed his chin thoughtfully, the rememberance of a tyrannosaurus was only vague in the back of his mind. "Heard of it," He agreed with a nod of his head, "but don't completely remember it to be honest. Then again, the amount of 'spooky-dos' I've seen over the years, it'd be impossible for every one of them."

Jack reached out a hand, lightly rubbing Sarah's shoulder. "No, I don't think you've mucked it up. Besides, who knows what's going to happen with timelines now anyway with us lot here and no control over the outside world anymore. No one really knows how things will be affected." Jack frowned, slowly shaking his head. "Sarah... Martha isn't here," He said softly. "I heard she was here briefly but... I've been here nearly a week and I haven't seen her. I don't know what to tell you."

Sarah Jane chuckled at his terminology. "'Spooky-dos'?" she asked. "Is that what we're calling them now?" If they'd only known about their pterodactyl for two years, it was unlikely to be a holdover from that horrible business years ago. Someone would have noticed it over the years, and done something about it.

At Jack's next words, Sarah Jane felt a chill go through her. She had been so pleased to see both him and the Doctor that she hadn't considered fully what that meant. All three of them here, no one keeping an eye on things properly. "This is intentional, then," she said, lips set in a thin line. She reached up to squeeze Jack's hand. "The sooner we get out of this place the better."

Her spirits sank further when Jack said he hadn't seen Martha. "The Doctor had," she said. "But said she'd gone missing." She closed her eyes for a moment, the image of that woman's body flashing in her mind. "When I first arrived, remember I said there was something awful I found in the woods? It was a woman's body, face too badly mangled to be recognizable. It couldn't...." She turned away from him as her voice caught in her throat. She'd known the woman for such a brief time, but still felt a close connection to her, as she did with any of the Doctor's companions she'd met.

Jack shrugged, giving her a playful smile. "'Spooky-dos' sound a lot better than 'really fucked up shite we don't have a good name for and probably never will' doesn't it?" Hard to say if Myfanwy had been around for that long or not -- and she could have come back and forth through the Rift countless times over; the Rift had funny ways of working most times.

"Has to be intentional," Jack replied, knowing he should probably learn how to sugar-coat things, but also knew full-well that speaking that way to Sarah would be condescending only. They'd seen too much and to try and soften the blow was demeaning. "The Doctor's been trying, making a sorta sonic modulator but I don't know what luck he's been having unfortunately." Jack sighed. "I want to get us out of here and back where we all should be. Not... studied like fucking lab rats."

Jack closed his eyes, drawing in a deep breath, taking a step towards Sarah Jane and cupping her face in his hands. "Sarah... what exactly did you see when you got here? Describe the whole thing to me."

Sarah nodded, admitting to herself that it really did. She wasn't a fan of swear words in general, which helped her prefer the former to the latter. "It doesn't seem like something you'd say, necessarily," she said. "You didn't coin the phrase."

"He was gathering parts for the modulator when I met him here," she said, thinking back to the amusement park. "He said 60-40 chance at best, once its finished." Not the best odds, but better than nil, so Sarah Jane was quite happy with them. Besides, even at a 1 in a thousand chance, the Doctor usually came out trumps. If he thought there was any chance of the modulator working, then Sarah believed in it as well.

She opened her eyes as she felt Jack take her face in his hands, and took a deep breath. Her journalist's memory wasn't always pleasant to utilize, but Jack needed to know. "Out in the woods, between the carnival and the gas station, maybe about a hundred meters from the road, there was a body half-buried in the snow. A woman, slender, dark-skinned, clothes too dirty to tell what they'd been aside from trousers and a shirt. Hard to say what had killed her. The woman I met when I first arrived, GLaDOS, couldn't tell either. But her face...." Sarah shuddered for a moment. "There was nothing left of it, Jack. No way to tell what the woman had looked like before she died. It had been clawed or sliced completely. GLaDOS said she thought the wounds were done post mortem." She held Jack's gaze. "Have there been other incidents like this?" she asked, not entirely sure she wanted an answer. "Any other bodies like that one?"
