Laura couldn't go out during the part of the day after dawn and before evening. That was a given, due to her permanent and serious condition. But L could, and did, simply to briefly escape the quiet dark of the drug/liquor store. He needed to get out... he needed to just start walking and turn his mind to different things. The confrontation yesterday between Bob and Jay had shaken him enough, but after the discovery of Light's body, all he could think to do was get away.
It wouldn't do to stay with Laura at the moment. Though she was L's favorite person and lover, he was running from death today and her presence was a true reminder of that. Only Light would not be like Laura. Light would stink, and rot, and fall apart and do it all with sightless eyes and putrefaction bloating his belly until it burst. It would not be lovely and sensual and mothball-tasting kisses, it would be terrible. As the day grew warmer and the body continued to hang from the clocktower, the decay was going faster, and L wanted to put it behind him. That could have been me. Maybe it's because I taunted the Man Behind the Curtain... is this because I dared to ride the lightning and touch something I shouldn't have? Though L and Light's relationship had been complicated... no one L could think of deserved to die like that.
L looked up, finding himself at the church. A large iron cross adorned it, like so many other churches. A place of peace, rest, and worship. People were baptized in buildings like this, got married in buildings like this, and their funerals were held in places like this.
L did not believe in God. He slipped the skeleton key into the lock, and it fit, so he locked the door. Immediately after, he unlocked it, pushing it open, looking inside at the dark, solemn interior. God damn you, Light Yagami... and God damn this place. Silence answered his silent curse, as was to be expected.
