Entry tags:!complete, day 08, l lawliet, location: pharmacy/liquor store, merope gaunt

Who: L & Merope
Where: Drug/Liquor Store.
Where: Around noon.
What: Coming to sit with him most likely.
Rating: G or PG.
Status: Active

Merope felt that while she would rather rest up, she knew that L seemed to need company. Unlike many of them here, Merope offered the unusual mothering, openly affectionate care without being asked for it. Gathering herself as best she could, it took her about nearly ten minutes or so to get where she had to go, regardless of how slow her gait faired. Once she arrived at the store, she moved with ease into the store with a jerk of the door and released it so it made a noise, making her jump lightly.

Her hands shoved into her sweater pockets and looked around for someone else, but had such a difficulty and she frowned.

"L..L?" She called for him in her soft voice.

Inside, L was freshly returned from his foray out into the cold to help George and Sid's clone. He would have paid dearly for a cup of hot cocoa, but he had to settle for cold whiskey, relying on its burn for warmth in his frozen gullet. L didn't drink, but necessity drove him to it today. Even though the snow was melting, it was still cold. And, of all people, L had an IQ approaching 200 and certainly had brain cells to spare.

He glanced up from his place on the floor after dizzily setting the whiskey bottle aside, feeling slightly sick. He wasn't used to drinking, and he didn't think that he would be again. It seemed that someone had come to see him, and that she was the very person he'd invited. "Merope?" he asked, surprised to hear her call him "L". Word got around, it seemed; no matter how often he professed that his name was "Ryuzaki", people would call him L. It was only natural, he supposed, that the true name and title would win out over the pale pseudonym.

Merope looked around for him, finding him sitting down on the floor. Her mouth moved to the side and she lowered herself slowly onto her hands and knees, allowing herself to lean to one side and let her hip help her sit down beside him. "....Are you okay? You don't look okay..." Merope was a strange creature, she moved her hand to his forehead and allowed her hand to rub lightly before pulling away.

The black haired girl leaned close beside him so their shoulders touched but nothing more,"You look cold." she frowned.

L instinctively shifted away from Merope; it was his first time meeting her, and he was always nervous around new people... but as he observed her and got used to her, it became easier to match her face and voice to the way she wrote in the journals. He took a deep breath, sighing, reconciling things in his own mind, before offering her a timid, pale smile. Like Merope, L himself was very strange.

One thing that caught L off-guard was Merope's comfort with and willingness to touch him. It was very odd to him... he furrowed his brow. Her hand was warm. Nothing like Laura. And something about that made him freeze inside. When their shoulders touched, he moved away until that was no longer the case. "Sorry..." he apologized, with no trace of anger or resentment in his voice. "I have a thing... a problem... when people touch me I panic. And I'm not cold... not really... my clothes will dry and then I'll be fine."

He retracted from her, she instantly felt upset, uneasy and her stomach turned in circles. While she never really smiled, her uneasiness was hard to detect thanks to this lack of real emotional expression other than miserable. Her eyes lowered, she was looking forward to be around someone that actually didn't seem too busy.

A sigh came from her mouth and she moved from where she was to the opposite wall, wincing as she pulled her knees close to her chest, arms locked and fingers interlaced. "Sorry, I shouldn't have done that."

Merope had so much love to give, it bothered her that none of it was ever acceptable or returned. In her own mind, she felt as if she were unlovable, but wouldn't dare say it allowed as others would feel the need to maybe say things they didn't mean.

Empty words, basically.

Her eyes lifted, their mismatched colours resting on his hands mostly and up to her mouth and nose, but not his eyes.

L seldom regretted his actions when they affected others, paying no attention to whether they were positive or negative. However, Merope was so pathetic that he did actually feel something like guilt. No wonder that fright Rorschach reacted so well to her. She was more afraid of L than he was of anyone. Someone like this was completely harmless, surely.

L never noticed that Merope's eyes were different colors. Had he been able to make eye contact with strangers, he might have, but it seemed that he and Merope had something in common. "It's not a horrible thing... it's not you, it's me," L said, the words ironic considering they had just met and had never broken up, or anything along those lines. "You certainly didn't have to move all the way over there. It's just touching. You're warm, even though you came in from outside, and that startled me, I guess."

Briefly, her eyes found his own for only a moment or two before lowering them. L had been the first person she ever met that was Asian, his face was so strange in comparison to hers. As much as she wanted to stare, she knew much better than to do that, but could barely help herself from it unless she avoided it all together.

Merope shook her head,"It's okay."

Instead of making a big deal about it, she took a deep breath and tried to avoid saying something about the situation so it would drop.

"I didn't mean to startle you. Are you okay?" She tilted her head.

Technically, L was only part Asian, but he was probably the closest thing to that Merope had ever seen. Personally, L saw so many mixed breeds and caucasians that there was nothing particularly special to him about Merope, except perhaps that she looked terribly sick.

"Of course I'm OK," he said, his voice soft and clipped, with naturally precise articulation. L was a quiet thing, thin, pale, and fragile-looking. In most ways, he was Rorschach's exact opposite.

"You can come closer, if you want. I'm getting used to you."

Merope felt a pang of sharpness in her lower body but said nobody, she knew better than to move and kind of irritate it. In a childish manner, her hands played with her shoes and pulled the laces and tied them back on purpose.

"How come your name is only one letter?" She asked, resting her head on her kneecaps.

L glanced at her shoes, his bare feet touching and rubbing against each other. Even when it was cold, he avoided shoes when he could, and his feet were already cut, bruised, and dirty as a result.

"Oh, it's..." L paused, surprised that she had asked him something of that nature. "It's one letter because no one knows my real name. It's like a stand-in... to be safe. That's what I was known as in my world. I had a dangerous job." Even though L was wary about sharing even that much, he was a fairly good judge of character. Merope, timid thing that she was, didn't seem the type to spill.

Tilting her head a little, she decided that now was a safe time to moved beside him. Merope, with ease, leaned forward on her hands and knees and crawled beside him and set down rather delicately as she did not want to feel a pain shoot up into her body. Once she was situated, she leaned her shoulder against the near the wall and raise her eyes to him.

"What is your real name? I'll be good, I won't tell." Merope pulled off her sweater and she rested it on his feet in hopes of warming them.

L watched warily as Merope approached, still not entirely comfortable with the idea of being too close to someone else. His time spent in close proximity with Laura had gotten him used to contact in some ways, but if possible, he could have been even more alienated from other aspects of human interaction. The living, even as pathetic as Merope, gave him the willies. Unlike the dead, L felt that he had something to fear from them.

"I'm sorry," L said, with a slight shrug. "I'd tell you if I could, but no one knows. Not even my girlfriend knows the name my mother called me. Even if you wouldn't tell, I came from a world where a person could kill you if he knew your name, so I have to be very careful. It's become a habit, and I am careful whether I know it'll save my life or make no difference at all."

Merope leaned against what she could, her eyes looking him over,"Being alive or dead isn't important to me really." She was just waiting for it to come her way as it seemed that she deserved it and even more damnation thanks to what she done. Regardless of what Rorschach said, she was an awful human being in her own mind and deserved nothing short of death.

"If I cared about living...it would be a problem, but if you don't want to tell me, you don't have to." She said turning around so she wasn't as close to him anymore.

"Me, either," L agreed quietly, drawing his arms closer to his chest as if cold as Merope watched him. A voyeur and observer himself, L disliked being looked at. He looked pathetic and thought that he was ugly, so any sort of scrutiny was generally unwelcome and unpleasant.

"Sorry. I just can't..." L said, shrugging. "Call it 'trust issues' or 'paranoia,' but it's not something I'm at liberty to divulge. I haven't told anyone my name in almost twenty years. It's one of the only things I have that belongs only to me. Like... well... I don't know that I could compare it to your child, but... something like that." L's analogy was heavy-handed and inexperienced, but how else did he explain his reluctance to share something as human and common as a name?

Merope was somewhat childish in a way, she couldn't help but stare at his face often. She tilted her head a little to the right,"I like your eyes," She moved her fingers to her own eyes to mimic but she looked a little silly. Granted, if it was someone else, she might have been more offensive, but she complimented him.

When he mentioned the word "child", Merope's mouth went dry and she felt a tension there as a reminder of what she lost.

L groaned inwardly. It was the second time today he'd said something stupid to a woman about babies and children. Trust him to make that simple and devastating mistake more than once.

"I'm sorry. I'm not the best socially... please forgive me for bringing that up," he mumbled. "I didn't mean to offend."

Merope shook her head,"...You didn't, don't worry." Luckily, she would have to have an extreme emotional moment to even think of crying as it'd been mostly whipped out of her. At least L wouldn't have to deal with that, no over dramatics and wailing.

"I'm not offended." Well, she was, but she was only reminded that she should have not allowed herself to be taken and cared for her child. Merope wanted that child so badly now.

Raising her eyes briefly, she looked over L,"Why did you pick this place?" She looked away, trying to change the subject.

"I'm not really sure," L said, shifting slightly, leaning his head against his drawn-up knees. "I suppose it was here, and I ended up staying because of Laura. She's my partner," he said, wishing he could say more with a man's pride. That they were also lovers now, and that he had not been rejected by a beautiful woman. Never mind that she happened to be dead.

"How are things between you and Rorschach?" L asked, wondering if other sets of partners were pairing up in additional ways.

Merope listened intently, she thought of moving to get closer to him but resisted the urge because of last time. She didn't bring a smile to her face when he said the word partner, her mind went to her husband and her eyes went to her the missing ring on her finger.

She often wondered what would happen if this hadn't happen and if Rorschach wasn't there, would she even have ran into Sam?

After a bit of silence, she let her mouth slack on one side,"...I don't know, he's always busy. I....think I --" She shook her head," I care about him very much, he's...very..very gentle." That actually brought a light smirk to her face. "No one has every been gentle in my life before."

Merope looked over to L,"..I'm often alone. I don't feel very welcome by alot."

L, a skilled investigator, of course noticed the effect the word "partner" had on the lonely girl. She had had a child, and very probably a husband, he realized. "Sorry," he apologized again, growing frustrated with himself. Why did living women have to be so difficult to talk to and understand? Though... who knew. Maybe it was just Merope.

No, it was definitely L.

"Rorschach is busy a lot, but he's deviated from his typical pattern in speaking to women, and the change is apparent when he speaks of or to you. That is a very significant occurrence, especially for a sociopath," L said, with a slight shrug. "As for being alone... well... I suppose that can get lonely."

Brilliant deduction, Sherlock.

"I know that sounded stupid," L said after a moment. "Believe it or not, I'm... not. Stupid, that is."

Knowing that he spoke of her or to her in a manner which made her special caused a light smile to cross her face. Just the thought of being special to someone else had made her much happier,"...You don't sound daft to me, not at all. It's alright, don't worry about offending me." Merope, while simplistic in nature, was quite used to being harped on so small accidental things said didn't do much to her.

"You are right nice to me," Merope hoped to encourage him to not feel so apologetic.

L was glad to see Merope brighten, just a bit, when he mentioned that Rorschach seemed to think highly of her. It made him gladder to know that he was telling the truth about it.

"No, really, I can be very daft," L said modestly. "It depends on the day and the patience of whoever I might be conversing with. And you're actually a pretty easy person to be nice to," he added.

L's words were easy to take as what they were, she rarely received compliments and it was taken straight to heart. "You are not daft." She said again as if she hadn't been heard the first time,"...Hey, do you know if there are any snakes around?" She tilted her head a little bit, wondering if maybe someone knew the terrain better than she did.

Considering she never came out often.

"Snakes?" L asked. "It's funny you should mention that... because my first couple of days here, I was looking for snakes. I'm good at chemistry, and especially good at making poison, so I thought it might be useful. I didn't find any... it was too cold, and snakes have cold blood... but maybe you could find one now." he paused, remembering his own reason for wanting to find a snake and growing suspicious.

"Why did you want to find a snake, Merope?"

Merope had completely forgotten that she wasn't in the world of Wizard's and that nobody knew her lineage. she raised her eyes a little and settled them back onto L,"Oh, I can speak to snakes....I thought it would be nice to have some company." She grinned lightly and moved her right hand along the back of her head.

"It would make me feel safe.."

L raised both eyebrows in surprised unison. Well... there was something you didn't hear every day, even from the intensely disturbed.

"Really", he asked after a pause in which he tried to mentally digest that information. Not only did she consider serpents good company, but she actually felt safe around them?

"How does one go about talking to snakes?" L inquired, with the interest of one who had to know.

Merope nodded, she didn't know if she felt completely comfortable speaking as snakes did in front of him. She took a long, deep breath and calmed herself before speaking directly at him,"..Hello, L, I think you are nice." The words she said sounded exactly in the tones and frequencies that snakes would use, while it would not be understandable to people who didn't speak her language. It sounded just like a series of hisses, and strange breathing the way it came out of her mouth but it was very natural in a sense.

"..That's how..I talk to snakes." She said, her pale, unhealthy form slacked against whatever they were leaning on.

It was understandable, that Merope might feel uncomfortable doing anything unconventional in front of the excruciatingly judgmental L. He was critical even of the people he considered friends.

It went without saying that L didn't understand what she said. It merely sounded like an assorted series of hisses to him. He bit his lip, knowing that either Merope was insane, or he had actually heard a language he had yet to learn, or (was it possible?) couldn't.

"I see," he said, blinking several times, trying to think of something else appropriate to say in comment to Merope's unique demonstration.

The way he spoke, slow and unsure, she knew that he probably thought that she was insane or something. The frown came to her face as she slightly turned her head away, hands resting on top of her thin thighs.

Why was she so nervous, so strange about speaking in something that was almost native tongue for her? Who knew.

"...Is it bad?" She frowned.

L paused, not wanting what he meant to say to come out sounding wrong.

"No... it's not bad. It's just different," he explained carefully. "I've never heard of people who can speak to any sorts of animals before, at least, not really. Everything like that I've ever seen has either been fiction or a hoax, and it's just very, very impressive, if that actually works. Can you call them to you? It might save you the trouble of going to find one..." L repressed his initial desire to ask Merope if she could use snakes as weapons by urging them to bite others, or if she could control them. It would be a manipulative, selfish thing for him to do, to ask her that so soon.

"...If they hear me, I can, but otherwise I can't..."
