Day Eight - Mid Morning
Who: Luna Lovegood, Tonks and Dean Winchester
What: Collecting the Girls
Where: Library
When: Day 8, Mid Morning
Rating: TBD
Status: Active

If it had not been for Tonks' presence, Luna would have tried to immediately find someplace to hide. Something that might have been problematic as she was quite claustrophobic at times, and when the threat of Death Eaters lay upon the immediate world heavily, she would have been terrified to be in a small place. As it was, she sat in a far corner of the room, her back firmly against a wall and one shoulder against a bookcase.

That Dean was coming, it eased her terror, if only a little. The Mark, the strange entries in the journal that she had read this morning, they all pointed to one idea in her mind, and it was one that had made her sleep fitful and grasped only in short intervals.

Luna was frankly terrified, and it was not something that she could or would deny. It was not the death that Voldemort's followers wrought, it was the torture, and the shackles, and the windowless, skyless cells. One of her hands slid into her jacket pocket and grasped the three blue Pixie Stix in her pocket, the move unconscious and unnoticed. With her knees pulled up against her chest, the small witch was more of a ball of frightened humanity than her usually dreamy self.

Dean was fresh from having delivered Lexie to the gym and it was a long trek to the library in the snow. He was tired from a restless, cold night, and it was almost more than he wanted to deal with trying to get to the library to make sure Tonks and Luna were safe. Still he was not going to leave them be by themselves for anything in the world. He couldn't understand what the men were thinking leaving women by themselves and he would have liked to have kicked a few of them in the ass if he could have.

He was within sight of the library and when he pushed even harder, he was able to trot up the stairs and in the door. Looking around, he called out through the building's front hall with its librarian lecturn and front desk. "Luna? Luna! Where are you?" he shouted a bit hoarsely.

He turned a corner at a fast pace and his boots skidded with a loud screech on the marble floor as he stopped abruptly. She was there, huddled down in the corner, looking so small and scared. "Oh Luna, are you okay?"

Tonks wasn't exactly what one would consider a shrinking violet. But she wasn't unsympathetic toward Luna and her fear. There was something more there, something more than Luna would say. Something happened, but Tonks didn't know what. Fucking rules of time-turners applied to accidental time-traveling as well. That was what Tonks thought. But she had done a quick scan through of the area, armed with what she could arm herself with.

It was two things, actually. One was a stick that looked sort of like a wand. And the other was a piece of wood that could knock someone out. If you can't magic them, physicality would have to be an option. And the fake wand would throw them off guard. Hopefully, anyway.

The yelling caught her attention, and she ran to follow it. The yelling was Luna's name, though no voice she'd heard. Skidding, literally, to a stop, Tonks came up behind the man. Not close enough to be a threat. Not yet. "Who're you then?" Not a figure she knew, but she didn't know every Death Eater.

It would have been impossible not to hear Dean before he ever came into sight, yelling her name and pounding boot steps. "Dean?" Her own call was far quieter, far more shaky. It was, however, slightly strengthened, as well as edging with a bit less fear because it was definitely not a Death Eater entrance. They practically slithered into place, nearly silent, if not completely. And most certainly would not imitate American Muggles to draw out a single witch.

Imagine, imitating both a Muggle and an American.

He asked if she was okay, and she gave him the most honest answer she could give. Luna shook her head slightly. The journal she could barely stand to be around lay open off to her side, full of comments and notes and messages.

Just then Tonks appeared, and Luna looked over at her, at the other woman who she had only met originally on her way out of the hospital wing. This same age that Tonks was now, in fact. "Tonks, he's Dean. He's safe."

Dean whirled around at the sound of a voice behind him. He blinked once, his brows knitting together as he was questioned by someone. Had to be Tonks. He'd known Tonks was with Luna but he hadn't expected her to be on the defensive when he got there. He supposed that was a good thing though. There needed to be a few girls who knew what they were doing or at least put on a good enough show to stop people in their tracks. They couldn't all be fragile. Not that he minded fragile, he just wasn't good with it really.

"Dean Winchester," he answered somewhat seriously then tried to lighten the mood because Luna did not need anymore seriousness. "Knight in hamburger-lined armor. You must be Tonks?" He held out his hand to her to shake though his friendly smile didn't quite reach his eyes this time. He was too frustrated with the fact that these two had been left alone to fend for themselves when all hell had broken loose.

Turning back to Luna, he asked, "Are you okay? I mean, not hurt or anything?" He knelt down beside her and gave her a quick once over with his eyes to be sure there wasn't anything more to her being huddled down there than the fact that she was scared.

She was petite, yes, but a fighter. So, against a Muggle, it was less a show. Against another wizard, who had their wand? And a Death Eater? Totally a show. But it was the Yank with the interesting taste in music. Quick glance over to Luna, to make sure that she was seriously okay with the man, and then Tonks nodded once. "Tonks. Knight with pink hair." Said with a wry grin and a handshake. Least right now it was pink.

She crouched down as well, putting the stick that was supposed to be a wand in her back pocket with her journal. Moody would have yelled at her, but it felt comfortable there. She felt a little more in control with something that at least felt vaguely familiar. "Nothin' doing, lambie. I took some pokes around and couldn't find anything." From a crouch to an unceremonious flop onto her rear. Hands tousled through bright hair. It was whoever had the control-stick, fucking with them. That was what it was, Nymphadora.

Luna wrapped her arms tighter around her legs, her hands sliding over one another as one moved to tighten her fingers around her wrists in a clasp. She had drifted off into her own world while they introduced themselves, without meaning to. The safety of her internal little space of dreaminess was threatened too much to remain their for more than a second before she did her best to drag herself immediately back out again.

Usually peace could be found there, now only shadows of nightmarish figures.

Physically okay? It took a moment to get the message through, but she managed a stiff little nod through her fear, which blocked her off like the wall behind her and the bookshelf beside her. "No evidence of the Cruciatus, of Avada?" While her voice shook, especially on the name of the former curse, Luna needed to know and Tonks would know what she spoke of. That those two curses were left in traces in the wake of each attack, as if they were the favorite toys of Death Eaters.

What she really feared snaked its way out next, "Of Lucius Malfoy? I do not wish to go back, please do not let me go back."

Dean frowned and looked between Luna and Tonks as they talk about things he couldn't understand. He figured it must be something to do with their wizarding world and the spells that Luna was practicing to do with her hands. "I'm guessing those are bad things and they aren't around?" he asked, pointedly looking at Tonks as he spoke.

He wanted the reassurance that there wasn't anything magical that he needed to worry about since he obviously wouldn't know how to look for it himself. He also wanted to have her repeat it to reassure Luna as well. She looked so small and lost in herself that he had the urge to just pick her up and carry her right out of there. The danger with that was who knew what was outside the building with all the damned clones running around causing havoc. The last thing he needed was to run into a Luna or Tonks clone with the real Luna and Tonks and have Luna have a breakdown of some sort. He didn’t know if she would but he didn’t want to take the chance.

Yeah he sucked at this whole crying girls thing. Get it together, Winchester, he thought and turned questioning eyes to Tonks.

"Those are bad things," This said to Dean, but she was focused on Luna. "But they're not around. I did a thorough check." Her face twisted into distaste at the mention of Malfoy. He was such a wanker. "He's not here either, Luna." And if he was, she hoped that he was stuck without his wand. In mud. A lot of mud. "Just the ones y'know." Which meant her and Merope Gaunt.

She reached over, tugging Luna's hair lightly. She did that with Ginny from time to time, when they had done the girl-talk thing at Grimmauld. "Wanna see somethin' funny?" Asked with a small grin. Don't worry, Dean. Tonks was a girl and kind of sucked with the girls crying thing. She hated seeing people upset. "Gimme an animal."

Despite the fact that Luna was just slightly older, had technically (at this point) been involved with the war against the Death Eaters longer, the fact that Tonks was an Auror (not involved in the Rotfang Conspiracy), it gave the blonde some comfort. She trusted the other witch to know what she spoke of.

It was hard to believe that Malfoy was Tonks's uncle, technically, at least. She was much more like her cousin Sirius from what Luna had heard, although she had never even seen him in person once. By the time Sirius had showed up, she had been knocked into unconsciousness and had not woken until the next morning.

No tears were shed, although she did sniff once, just in time for Tonks to tug on her hair. Something that definitely distracted her slightly, making her look back at the pink-haired woman. "A rabbit?"

Dean sat there silently, listening to the two girls interact. Well mostly Tonks explaining and Luna offering a few sniffles. She was so completely not herself that it set Dean on edge. Where was the girl who laughed at him model-walking in horrible clothing or gave him pixie stix and made her own constellations? It was so hard for him to imagine that this Luna was the same person he had met a few days ago and instantly liked probably more than anyone. There was no peace around her though and he was frustrated still that anyone would leave her alone.

Then Tonks suggested Luna choose an animal and Dean did a double take. "What? Wait a minute. There's some serious stuff going on right now and you two probably shouldn't still be here. Especially not alone with Luna like that." He indicated the blonde with his open palm up and, in his irritation, he pushed himself back on the heels of his boots and stood up straight. "It's not time for games."

Tonks wasn't ignoring Dean. Not completely, anyway. She was, however, trying to get the other woman's spirits back up. "Don't have chocolate." Muttered to the man. So this would have to do.

"What was that, Luna? Didn't hear ya right." An impish smile appeared, as she was watching Luna, and an ear perked. A rabbit's ear. There was a set of rabbit's ears popping right up from the moptop of pink. Well, actually, they less popped up and more just appeared. Like they were always there. Luna was the young woman who, at fourteen, faced down Death Eaters. So Tonks wasn't treating her like a child, but rather getting the blonde to a spot where she could function without being crippled by her fear. Laughter helped with that.

At least, that was what Tonks was hoping.

Distraction was a way to allow yourself time to pause your fear so that it could be managed and dealt with later. Luna knew this well enough, and did appreciate the distraction of bunny ears from the other witch.

A slight smile pulled at her lips, and even Luna felt the pain of regret that she had not been able to interact with Tonks in that other world. Her own magic was nothing like the Metamorphmagus ability that Tonks was born with, and it fascinated her even more for it. The smile widened a fraction for a second as she looked at the ears curiously, "Lagomorph ears on a witch," her wide blue eyes met Tonks for all of a second, before she looked up and up at Dean.

"We should go? The library is not a secure stronghold." That did not really sound like her at all, but instead shades of an overheard Mad Eye Moody speech. Of course, he had not spoken it in her voice, drenched in fear, but tipped in her usual dreaminess.

Luna moved to stand up, unfolding her small body and using the wall as a brace.

Dean was focused on Luna, about to reach down and offer her a hand up because Tonks didn't seem to be taking things seriously enough. There was a time and a place for fooling around and this was not it. What did chocolate have to do with it? Then he saw Luna's expression, her smile beginning to reappear and he glanced toward the other girl. Stopped. Slowly his eyebrows raised and his look turned to a somewhat impressed one. "What do you know? Our very own Easter Bunny. That'll stop them in their tracks." He chuckled and almost reached out to see if the ears were in fact real but held off the childish impulse.

The site of the girl with bunny ears and hearing Luna begin to pull herself out of the debilitating terror she'd seemed to have been in sort of broke the spell of seriousness for Dean. He felt himself unable to stop smiling or hold back his other childish impulse. Asking for a request. "Can you do an octopus?" he asked, momentarily completely fascinated with Tonks. They must put something in the wizarding world water because these native girls had serious stress relief capabilities. He could really get into that.

He was so focused on Tonks that he almost didn't hear Luna. Breaking his attention away for a second, he turned toward Luna to offer her his hand to help her up from the floor. "We probably should leave, yes, but only if you're okay."

Tonks winked at Luna when she spoke about the ears. Atta girl. And was standing as well once the blonde was picking herself up. "Moody got to a whole new generation, I see!" She grinned brightly in spite of the situation at hand. Her mentor could be a complete ass sometimes, but she loved that gruff man like an uncle.

Turning to Dean, Tonks' eyes got wide. "I've never tried an octopus! Remind me later and I'll give it a go, yeah?" Appreciative Tonks was quite appreciative. Dean took the fact that she could do that very easily. It could have gone a lot worse.

She looked to Luna again then, and lifted her eyebrows a little. "Alright?" Once given the go-ahead, Tonks would be ready to go as well.

Rather than answer, Luna simply nodded. Now was not the time or place to break the laws of Time Turners to explain how the other witch's mentor had been killed less than a year before the pink-haired witch herself. So many senseless deaths that it had taken a good deal of healing for their world, in order for its inhabitants not to want to burst into tears or break something when thinking of all that had been lost.

Tonks's ability being explored reminded Luna, just as she was setting a hand in Dean's proffered one, of the magical experiment she had meant to show them both. Distraction, temporary distraction. Enough to keep her functional and not lapsing into thinking of things she already knew would be coming for her in her nightmares soon enough.

When asked twice if she was alright, if she was better, the blonde witch took the offered help to stand properly, before she answered. "The wandless Cheering Charm, I finished it. I know how now." Luna's fingers squeezed those of Dean's, drawing a measure of comfort from the relatively brief contact.

He'd seen enough in his life to not be shocked to see a girl produce rabbit ears at will. He'd also seen Luna practicing her Cheering Charm and he knew that she believed in animals and creatures that most human (or rather Muggles) thought were hoaxes or legends. They probably existed in her world and he wished he was part of her world. Except right now she was not dealing as peacefully and cheerfully as he had known her to do.

So Dean would have liked to have paid more attention to Tonks because she was the one clearing the room of stress but Luna had been working on the Cheering Charm. She'd promised to show him the funny outcome that apparently wasn't the one she had wanted when he next saw her. He'd forgotten that but he remembered now and turned a smiling face to her. Especially when she squeezed his fingers. It was that squeeze that made him wonder how many of his own little touches had truly not gone unnoticed as he'd thought they had.

"You mastered it? Does that mean no funny side effects?" he asked, holding on to her hand longer than he needed to. "You girls with your magic. A normal guy could end up feeling unnecessary." He smiled genuinely at Luna. "Good thing I'm not normal." Then his expression was amusedly ribald. Was he actually flirting in a crisis situation? Looked like it. Yeah, he was an ass and he knew it. No walls up now. The whole serious, savior of the day, persona was shot to hell. He was just Dean Winchester, distracted man of the hour extraordinaire.

Tonks was a people-watcher, and was doing that right now. Eyebrows lifted a little, quirky smile appearing as she saw how Luna and Dean touched each other. It was those small things that she had done with Remus. And those small things that made her realise that she had a huge crush on the older man. She hoped he and Sirius and the rest of the gang were doing alright.

"Wandless cheering charm! Oh, that's ace!" Obviously, Tonks knew what Luna was talking about. "Let's see it, then." And then she laughed at Dean's comment. "Normal is completely overrated at any rate." Said with a wink. He was Charlie Weasley in Muggle form. It amused the older (well, currently younger) witch. She liked this version better than Atlas Shrugging-Dean.

"Let's have a look as we're going." Still, there was a mission at hand. And currently it included changing locations.

Choosing to focus on her two companions was allowing her to reel in her fear, at least a little. The last thing she needed was another flashback as she had had the night before, something that she had not had in years. They had only started in her seventh year anyway, and she had not been alone in dealing with them. So many had required mental Healers in order to sort everything out.

A small, tremulous smile was gifted in exchange for the one Dean turned on her. She gave an equally small nod to answer both their questions/comments, not pulling her hand from Dean's.

It worked well as a momentary distraction, holding one palm upwards and focusing on it for half a second until the necessary little globe of golden surface appearing. Blowing on its surface to put more air inside was just another step to pushing off her fear. When it had finished, it blew off her palm in a perfect bubble form to float lazily away and upwards. Luna pulled a slight smile from her array.

They really were Cheering Charms.

"True enough, Tonks!" he answered. Normal was very overrated. He'd never been normal a day in his life. Not even back before Sam had come along and Mom had died. He'd always been a little charmer with a penchant for mischief far beyond what most kids his age had gotten up to.

They were both talking and doing something different. Dean felt like he had ADD just now. His focus was so divided that his head was all but going back and forth like he was looking at a tennis match. Though once Luna started the deal with the bubble he was completely fixated. He'd seen plenty of "magic" in his time. There was the dark power demons wielded and there'd been that coven of witches that only wanted to nab husbands without having to get plastic surgery among other things. But this was something else for some reason. Maybe it was because she was holding his hand and he could almost feel the tension in the room lift away some as she did whatever it was she was doing.

He was silent until the bubble had floated upward and Luna was smiling a bit more. "So that's what you were working on last time we saw each other," he muttered, still looking up after the bubble with some awe on his face. He gave her hand a squeeze and turned his eyes toward her and Tonks.

"Really should get on the move now. Are you two ready?"

Tonks grinned widely, watching the bubble float up, up, and away. Cheering charms were always a favourite. Both bunny ears perked upwards then disappeared as if they were never there. "We should put them in various places round." Mused to herself thoughtfully. Cheering charms might help morale.

"That's completely ace, Luna!" Cheerfully spoken, then she was shooing them both. "Let's go. Where are we off to? Where's the safest, then?"

The bubble wandered away in the air, and Dean gained a slight nod of Luna's blonde head for his barely discernible comment. The spell did not work quite as expected, it did not direct itself at a specific target, it was visible rather than invisible to the naked eye. Or the clothed eye, even, if eyes wore clothes. Still, they seemed to do something to lighten the surrounding area, if only by being cheerful looking.

Her hand curled around Dean's larger one, not dissecting the fact that she had yet to let go, and neither had he. Despite the loosening of the coil of fear and worry wrapped around her insides, things were not yet peaceful and calm once more. Instead, she spared a slight smile at Tonks' assessment of her spell, and waited for the other two to decide where they were going. As long as it did not involve a small space and/or a basement, she was willing to be led for the moment.

Dean gave Luna's hand a squeeze as she put it into his. Such a trusting gesture considering everything that had been happening today and the state she'd been in when he'd found her a few minutes ago. The Cheering Charm really did work, apparently. He was pretty sure he was going to need a few of those for himself when all was said and done today.

He shifted his eyes toward Tonks and asked, "Where is a good place for you two to hang out until this all blows over?" The question was half rhetorical. He wasn't sure Tonks had any ideas better than his own. What he wanted to do was bring them to Sam. Instinct told him that Sam was the best person to delegate responsibility and ensure things worked the way they should. Or maybe that was just his brotherly instinct to trust the one person he knew in this place the most.

"Where did Logan go?" he added to his list of spoken questions. He'd like to have smacked that one around a little for leaving them by themselves. But then he wasn't feeling very philanthropic toward most of the men in Vas Captio today. So best not to even think about it.

"Mm. Somewhere where there's a lotta folks." She suspected that Luna was a bit like Tonks herself, and preferred the company of others during darker times. Social creatures, as it was. But she was still relatively new to the area and didn't quite know where that was. "The gymnasium, maybe?"

Ah, as to where Logan went, Tonks gave the hamburger-coated knight a wry smile. "He can't just watch over us two all day." Reminded to Dean. Logan was one of their biggest muscle, and he was going to be needed in other places.

With a nod of agreement, Luna wished for a safe haven like Grimmauld Place was supposed to have been. Protected by spells and hexes and old, old magic. "It's a shame there is no place guarded by gargoyles, their protection is difficult to match."

Of course it was just as likely that Dean and Tonks had either not known of their protective qualities, in Luna's thoughts, or chose to disbelieve in the old myths. Churches might have been protected by them in the past millennia, but the creatures used to roam about and set protective lairs for those they chose to save from darkness.

Quite possible they all settled down for a nap when the Muggle Christians began placing them about their houses of worship. Poor things needed a few millennia of rest. Always chasing humans about and trying to keep themselves from harming themselves and each other. One could tear their hair out just thinking of taking the task.
