Day 7, after dark
Who: Luna, Tonks, and Wolverine
What: Dark Mark freak-outtage
When: After dark and through the night
Where: on the street and in the Library
Rating: PG-13 for language ... to start
Status: Active

Logan was heading out to patrol after the sun went down. He cracked his neck and looked around, sniffing for any Weevils. Fuckers had gotten brave last night ... no telling if they'd do it again tonight. In looking around, he noticed something in the sky, and stopped to get a better look.

The hell? Looked like some wierd-ass skull and ... a snake? Made out of clouds? The hell? He sighed and rolled his eyes. No doubt this was some shit dreamed up by their 'keepers'. He shrugged, shook his head, and started to cross the street towards the carnival.

With her back to the windows, her face to the bookshelves, Luna Lovegood was searching for a particular book among the tomes she could see. 'Lord of the Flies,' yes. Of course, she had no idea who it was by, what it looked like, or how long it was. But that just made it a sort of challenge/hunt. Something fun and interesting, as she practically floated around the shelves, looking at the titles on the backs of the books.

It took her nearly an hour to look through enough of the shelves to find it, and she made a happy sound to herself as her fingers closed around the binding of the thin novel. Dark had fallen while she had been in her own little world, completely having forgotten all those warnings not to go out at night.

Still not seeing what was in the sky as she passed windows that simply showed her dark sky, Luna thought to hurry, she should not have stayed as long as she should have. There were monsters out here.

When she opened the front doors, in order to exit, what was framed in the sky in front of her stole all the breath from her lungs. As if she had been hit with a hard curse straight to the chest. Her mouth unconsciously fell open in order to cry out in fear, but no sound came out as the book fell to the ground from nerveless fingers.

Death Eaters.

After hanging out with Andy for a while, Tonks knew that she needed to get back over to where she and Edward had been staying before the snow got any worse. Well, it was already bad. Really bad. But the witch was heading out anyway. It might be a good time to see if Apparating worked. Especially seeing as how the sky was darkening. She hadn't honestly tried yet.

With that thought, Tonks was ready to attempt an Apparation. But she was stopped by the glowing in the sky. Even through clouds, that all-too familiar marker was quite visible. Fuck. Fuck, fuckity fuck. The Auror thought of scribbling a note in her journal, telling everyone to stay inside and not open the door to outsiders, but right now the need to find the Death Eaters was overpowering that particular want. She ran in the snow, boots crunching. Why the hell did they take her wand and not theirs? Fuck. So now she was a petite figure of pink hair against the darkness and white snow running down the street.

The sound of the rusted library door opening made Logan turn to see who'd 'invaded' his lair when he was about halfway across the street. One quick look had him frowning.

Whoever she was, she was rigid and openmouthed with terror, and staring up at the funky cloud design with owl-wide eyes. Obviously meant something to her, if not to him. She wasn't someone he'd met before, either.

"Hey, doll? You ok?" He asked, heading back towards the library. The sound of running feet made him glance towards them, to see someone else coming his way at a dead run.

Ok, so whatever the hell the cloud-thing was, it meant /something/ to at least two people here, and to judge by the blonde's reaction, not a /good/ thing.

Memories soaked in darkness wrapped around her, at the sight of the sign all witches and wizards learned to fear. It meant death, it meant terror, it meant pain and screaming. Men marching in black cloaks and white masks, a cackling woman she knew was long dead, but still exemplified everything that the Death Eaters were.

A voice calling out made her step back on a half muffled whimper, before she even dragged her eyes away from the symbol of her nightmares in the sky.

It was another moment before the words he had spoken to even soak in, at least enough for her to realize what was being said. She shook her head, "No." No, she was not okay. Before, before she had thought that as long as Death Eaters did not haunt their footsteps, it could all be okay. Now? There were no wands, no Order of the Phoenix, no Dumbledore's Army.

They were trapped in a bubble with Death and she could not see an escape.

There were certain points in one's life that just stood out in memory all too clearly. The first time Tonks saw that sign was one of those points in time. She was little, and her mother was teaching her what to do if she saw that sign. What to do if a woman who looked like her mother came to the door. But what did a barely seven-year-old know about what it really meant? It wasn't until Tonks was older that she understood. And it wasn't until then that the symbol inspired anger as well as fear.

Anger and a need for action. That was what Tonks was focusing on. As she was running, she caught sight of two people. "Get inside!" She motioned back to the building. "I'm going to see if I can find them." Foolhardy, without her wand. But she had to know who, if anyone, was there.

Logan walked closer to Luna, slow enough (he hoped) not to spook her further. "They /who/?" He demanded of the woman running towards them. "What the fuck is that thing?" Then he turned to Luna.

"I dunno what the hell that is, doll, but whatever it is, whatever it means to the two of you, it's obviously not a good thing. C'mon in the library with me. Anyone's dumb enough to go in there, they're gonna be in for a hell of a surprise, and it's gonna have my name all over it."

It was likely the fact that he bore absolutely no resemblance to the patrician features, pale hair and paler skin of the one that she feared the most among the number who dealt death with laughter. It was that fact that kept Luna from startling further. Not much of a thing, but enough that she was not attaching him immediately to the feelings and memories of horror and panic.

The other voice was vaguely familiar, but Luna could barely tear her eyes away from the tattoo of a twisted soul in the clouds. A second was all she managed, to look away, and look at pink hair she recognized from long ago. Just as long ago as she had last scene footpaths of the Death Eaters. "Tonks?"

The strange man was speaking to her again, and Luna's eyes turned to him to take note of the fact that he was very much larger than herself. But, given what physical size actually meant in her world, it was more of a descriptor than anything to add fear to the situation. Wide blue eyes went back to the Mark, as the snake slid through the mouth of the skull, the eyes all shadows and darkness.

Eyes were windows to souls.

"They are magical people, who aren't terribly keen on funtimes. Now get inside!" She was an Auror, and thus a little more used to being listened to when she got in Serious Mode. Then he was ushering the blonde woman (who knew her name) in. Thank Merlin. Tonks followed, another searching look at the Mark and then out into the darkness. Constant vigilance.

Once she got closer, she was able to look at the blonde better and smiled comfortingly. "It's me." In her own timeline, Tonks would have just met Luna. The older of the witches would have been in the hospital right about now, and met her on the way out. Vaguely, she wondered if that timeline was still marching along without her. Was there another her there? Or did time stand still while she was here? Anyway. "Luna, yeah?"

Logan recognized ... and understood, to a point ... the blonde's reaction. Whatever the hell that thing was, it was scaring her pissless, and unless he missed his guess, she wasn't entirely in there here-and-now ... she had a sort of glazed, distant look in her eyes, on top of the fear.

Logan was ... very well aware that he was an intimidating man. Most of the time, he made good use of it, to make a living. But as Rogue found out, he was capable of being surprisingly gentle and solicitous if the situation called for it, and this did.

He moved to block her line of sight on the cloud. Being taller /did/ have its advantages. "Don't look at it, doll. Focus on something else. Trouble's not gonna come from /there/.

Well, it /could/ come from the sky in her world, but he didn't know that.

"Look at me, doll. Concentrate, ok? Let's get you inside, right? Then, anything comes at you, I'll kick their ass six ways from Sunday." He glanced over at pink-hair.

"Tonks? You know her then? Her name's Luna?"

A lock box in her mind had been thrown open by the sight in the sky, fractured and overwhelming memories escaped to the forefront of her mind at the trigger. Too many, too powerful to be brushed aside on her own. The heavy weight of iron shackles weighing down her delicate wrists, the feel of their oxidized surface against skin rubbed raw and oftentimes bleeding from pulling at the restraints.

Pain arcing between burning nerve endings, magic turned against her instead of lovely and at her fingertips. Crying out against her will in the wake of waves of agony.

Countless days and nights that passed without anything to really mark one from the other. Food coming at odd hours, random intervals, occasionally not for what she thought were days for a time. 'Practice time' with a young man with slate vision and a wand at the ready. Later pieced together to be a full two months completely alone in a skyless stone cage, but then only labelled 'forever.'

Rescue not coming for-

Fear dulled blue eyes were still caught on the slithering horror marked in clouds of evaporated moisture, when a massive figure blocked her view. Luna blinked as she returned to herself enough to look up at his face. Something tangible, ground yourself with something tangible to not be swept away completely.

"Luna, I am Luna," she spoke softly, her voice stripped of any ethereal dream-like qualities it might normally contain, simply words without inflection.

"I know her." Agreed to Logan as she ushered them inside of the library quickly. It was simply easier to say that yes, she knew her at this very moment rather than trying to explain that she knew of Luna and yaddee yah.

Tonks didn't know Luna though, and certainly didn't know what happened two years after the moment that she was taken from. So she didn't understand the fear of the Dark Mark. Beyond the fear that generally gripped everyone upon seeing it, anyway.

She was still shooing them away from the outside. Like a cop ushering people away from an accident. Move along. Nothing to see here. "Can you take care of Luna while I look about?" Forget that she didn't have a wand. There was still the good fight to fight.

Normally, Logan had an aversion to being herded that was akin to hatred. But, in this instance, he allowed it, holding an arm out to include Luna in the herding.

"Yeah, I got 'er." He told Tonks. "Anything comes in here I don't recognize, is gonna get a hell of a surprise." Then, in a far gentler tone. "C'mon, Luna, let's get you settled." Urging her in, towards where his 'bed' was at ... the most defensible part of the rickety library.

In her current state, with terror filled eyes, Luna easily was directed inside the library. Entirely silent, and moving nearly robotically, she was far from her usual self. Even while her view of the Dark Mark was blocked, she still felt compelled to look in that direction.

Still, one of her hands reached out to the arm that Logan had outstretched, another tangible sensation to ground herself. A Healer had advised her to find something to anchor her mind as much as possible in the present reality, rather than being swept back in time to memories she would rather not carry. This was not the first time she had been dragged back into the past, and the first had been a night long ago when she had helped Harry sneak into the Ravenclaw tower. The first time she had Stunned someone in battle.

On wooden limbs, she moved, only half in the current moment.

Tonks took another look around, peeking out into the darkness. Well, it wasn't entirely dark. There was the eerie glow from the symbol up above. She clenched her jaw tightly, wishing for nothing else but her wand and chance to go after the people who marred the sky with that.

But she was defenseless, and begrudgingly reminded herself of that. None of the Death Eaters could conjure that without their wand. Which put her in a predicament. Better to stay in, logically. Even if she hated the idea of hiding.

She followed into the library quickly, closing the door and looking for something to prop against it.

"C'mon, doll." Logan said, steering Luna into the library, towards the corner where he'd set himself up a place to sleep. He was mildly surprised when Tonks followed them in, one eyebrow going up. She'd seemed all ready to go kick ass a minute ago.

"Take a seat. I'll get a fire going." Ok, so some people would think it was heretical to use books as kindling, but shit. The ones Logan used weren't readable anyway. They'd been exposed to the weather too long, and were falling apart, or moldy, or some such.

"So." He said while he was getting the fire going. "What, exactly, does that thing mean, and who might be coming after us?" He needed to know what he was dealing with here.

Doing as directed, the (chronologically) younger witch sat down in the large nest of blankets, pulling her knees up to her chest to wrap her arms around them. Getting into as small a target as possible, it was harder to attack a small target, even with magic the smaller the target, the worse the accuracy.

Madam Pince would be going absolutely nutters right then, Luna thought a bit wildly. Wildly for Luna, even. To see books destroyed for a fire, it would have been the uttermost act of sacrilege one could perform. Then again, the librarian had had a habit of hexing students book bags to chase them out of the library when she felt that they had been abusing library privileges.

"The Dark Mark," the blonde supplied, tucking herself that much tighter into her upright ball. "Boasts of death, of torturous pain delivered with savage joy."

Logan grimaced. Whoever was behind the cloud show, they'd /really/ messed with Luna.

"Right. So, really, really bad news." He glanced over at Tonks, hoping for something a bit more specific than 'we're in trouble'.

She had been ready to kick ass, but logic also kicked in. It was difficult to kick ass without a weapon that matched your opponents.

Still, Tonks hated running away like that. So she was shaking a hand irritatedly through her hair while Logan spoke about a fire. "Remus would cry.." Muttered absently. About the books.

She shook herself out of self-chastising thoughts and took a breath. Then started pacing. "Luna and I are witches. That mark," Pointed outside, "Is the sign of bad wizards and witches. Real bad. They've gotta have wands in order to make that mark. I don't have my wand." Hence her not kicking ass and taking names. Which she really wanted to do.

Luna kept silent, the only magic at her disposal was in the summoning of a golden bubble that cheered her minutely. Unfortunately, and this was why it did not occur to her just then, she required some sort of mental stillness. A kind that she could not, in that moment, summon. The bubble would have done little good, in any case, but that was not the point.

Defensive hexes, shields, disarming spells, they all required the most important thing this place did not have. Wands.
