Day 7, dawn (ish)
Who: George and Wolverine
What: Teaching self defense
When: butt crack of the morning
Where: Gym
Rating: pg-13 at most for language
Status: active

They needed snow shovels. They really did. The snow was piling up but good ... and while it didn't bother Logan a bit, and wouldn't phase a few others, the vast majority of the folks in this hellhole'd have a problem wading through waist-high and worse drifts. As it was, Logan had to clear out in front of the gym door to get in. He sort of wondered if George'd need a hand getting out of wherever she was, and stopped just inside to write a quick note in the journal, then sat back to wait.

George had had an interesting morning. First - after Logan's scribble appearing on her journal while she was getting dressed - the whole 'rolling down the mountain of snow hoping it didn't roll over her instead' thing; then, well, she was wearing sneakers, and the base of her jeans, as well as her socks were soaking wet with melted snow by the time she'd gotten to the gym. Luckily, her beanie, earmuffs and coat were still intact and helping very much.

Hopefully, Logan wouldn't break her nose by accident, or something. Well, it was bound to only get worse, wasn't it?

She walked in like she was on the beach walking on wet sand, and looked around. "Logan, it's me. I'm here." Of course it didn't occur to her that even if Logan appeared she wouldn't know who he was, and vice-versa. But still, she doubted he had made self-defense appointments with anyone else for that time.

Logan hadn't wasted much time loitering around. He'd found some mats (more for George's sensibilities and potential falls than out of any real need for them on his part) and put them in the corner of the main gym space, since there didn't seem to be anywhere set up for that purpose.

Hearing someone call him, he headed back towards the main doors and nodded. "So you're George." He looked her up and down, not with lascivious intent, but with an eye towards her existing muscle mass and overall size. "Nice ta meetcha." He gave her a lopsided grin. "You're gonna be feeling today, I won't lie, and every other day if you wanna keep working at it ... but you /will/ learn shit that'll keep your ass outta hot water if you get nabbed by some asshole with less than stellar intentions."

George had been removing her earmuffs and beanie hat when Logan showed up; the first thing she felt was intimidated, and then...Well, she wasn't exactly that dead.

She nodded, anyway, because making an ass of herself wasn't in her plans at the moment. "Yeah you too." George said, expressionless while trying very hard not to make huge eyes at Logan. Still, she smiled at what he said, and nodded again. "I was kind of expecting that already, honestly."

No, she probably wasn't, but hey. She'd gotten herself into this, might as well let it happen.

Logan snorted in amusement. "C'mon, I got an area set up in the gym." He led her into the gym.

"First thing you gotta learn is that when it comes to dealing with the kinda guys that prey on women, whether to just steal from them or worse, is they depend on the intimidation and fear factor, as well as the fact that most women don't have the same kind of physical strength men do." Logan pointed a finger at her. "Second thing is ... when it comes to those types, you want to put them down and /keep/ them down long enough for you to get the hell away from them. A quick box to the ears or kick to the groin may slow them down, but they're liable to get back up and go after you, and unless you're fast as hell, you won't have been able to put enough distance between you and them to make chasing you impractical. You gotta be willing to do /serious/ damage, or at least knock the asshole unconscious."

George smirked as she followed Logan, and then stood listening attentively to what he had to say. She moved her head back when he pointed his finger at her, with a playful smirk, but then kept listening.

Serious damage? Oh, George could handle that. Nodding, she crossed her arms. "No worries here Logan, I won't have problems of conscience if they suffer a little."

So long as she didn't kill them. That could prove to be problematic, if that violent idiot Daisy had been briefly interested in was anything to go by. Then again, George had been the one to end him once and for all, so maybe she'd be okay. But now that she was 'boss' maybe it was better to try not killing people not on the list.

Logan nodded, pleased she wasn't quailing at the thought of doing serious damage. "Well, if you're ok with that, you're a good two steps ahead of most women." He admitted. "So ... first thing's first. Get in the habit of paying attention to your surroundings. Not just so you notice if some scumbag is coming at you, but with a mind towards what you can use as a weapon to even the odds. Pretty much anything not nailed down or overly heavy is fair game. Might not do a whole hell of a lot of damage before it breaks, but that's not the point. The point is to startle and slow the asshole down long enough for you to get your hands on something more substantial ... or kick his ass. Which is where what I'll be teaching you comes in." He motioned towards the mats. "C'mon. I'm gonna grab you from behind, then walk you through your options, then let you practice 'em. And don't worry about hurting me. I'll be fine."

George shrugged. Well if the guy deserved it...

Now paying attention to her surroundings was easy now she had to look for someone based only on an initial and a last name in a specific amount of time; but truth was George was still rather self-involved, so it might be hard at the same time.

As she listened to Logan, George's eyes shifted. Startle them and slow them down? She could definitely do that. Now, the kicking ass part. She nodded and dropped her arms to each side of her body, moving her fingers nervously. "Okay."

Logan walked up behind George and looped one arm around her throat in a loose headlock, the other around her waist.

"All right. If they come up behind you, they're probably going to grab you something like this. First ... if you can get to their arm, bite. If you can't, stomp the shit out of their foot ... but make sure you aim for the main part of the foot, not the toes. The toes of shoes are the sturdiest, and there's a chance the guy might be wearing steel-toed boots, which'd mean stomping his toes wouldn't do a damn thing. Hit the main part of his foot hard enough, you'll break the bones, and he won't be running /anywhere/ for a while. And if you're wearing stiletto heels, you could punch straight through his foot entirely. Speaking of heels ... try to keep to ones you can get out of fast, or can break the straps on. Haven't met the woman yet that can run full tilt in heels, and it's better to get your feet a little cut up than to end up mugged or worse."

"You can hit him in the sternum with your elbow. If he's not /too/ much taller than you, ram your head back against his face ... try to break his nose or jaw for him. That one won't work if you're only chest high to the asshole, though."

George's heart started beating faster when she felt his arm around her throat - even if loosely, and even though she was certain he wasn't going to attack her for real. It was an instinctive reaction, she supposed. Well, it made her want to react, so that was good. Apparently, she didn't lack the self-preservation drive.

She rolled her eyes at the notion of heels. Only for work - otherwise she'd keep wearing sneakers like she used to before. George nodded in understanding of everything Logan explained.

"Got it." She had her hands over his arm - again, instinctively - and turned her head left. "Am I suppose to do all this to you now, or...?"

"Good. One last thing ... if the guy /is/ too tall to headbutt ... when you hit him in the foot or sternum with your elbow, he'll generally bend forward in reaction, which'll give you a chance to headbutt him."

Then he tightened his hold, as if he really was trying to grab/contain her, rather than showing her what she could do with him in that position ... but not tight enough to actually cut off her air. "Go for it."

Since he knew the moves and knew they were coming, if not in what order, he'd be able to deflect the worst of her shots. And if he didn't? Well, that's what a healing factor was FOR.

Why had she asked? Why on earth did George Lass feel the need to ask this guy if he wanted her to beat him up? Because she didn't wanna do it. She had to be provoked, and while he tightened the grip on her throat, it still wasn't provoking because it was him, and he was teaching her. Somehow the notion of biting his arm felt worlds of awkward.

But, she did believe that practice overcame theory, so she supposed it would have to be done. Remembering all he had told her took a little while - lots of options - but she soon had the sequence down.

George bent her knees so her mouth would be sort of on the same level as Logan's arm, and bit it, and right after she stomped on his foot as hard as she possibly could but probably without making much damage - she was wearing sneakers and barely feeling her feet due to the cold, after all.

Elbow to the sternum - sort of - and then, well, he was much taller than her. So no head butting just yet, because George's elbowing wasn't nearly strong enough to get Logan to bend over, surely.

What kind of 'supernatural being' didn't have super strength, anyway?! What a lame way to be a reaper.

Logan noticed the slight hesitation, and made a mental note to address that issue.

Other than that, she did fairly well for a first try. Didn't bite hard enough to draw blood ... at least, not on him, but she did get a good grip in. The foot stomp was good too ... made him bite back a curse. Good aim, definitely. The shot to the sternum needed work though ... even if he /didn't/ have the protection of a metal-covered sternum, that shot wouldn'tve done much ... it sort of skidded off to the side.

"Good. Very good for a first try." He loosened his grip again. "Just a coupla things. One ... why did you hesitate?" There were a shitload of possibilities on that one. "And two, we're going to have to work on your aim for the sternum shot, but you've definitely got the right idea."

George turned around to face Logan and shrugged. In her mind it hadn't been that good at all, but then again, she didn't have a term of comparison. She paused and frowned. "Because you're not really attacking me? It's not that easy to just kick someone's ass when they're actually helping!"

She smiled, and nodded. "Yeah I figured I suck at that. But hey, it wasn't all bad, and I was expecting to do worse."

"Gonna have to work on that killer instinct." Logan said. "You hesitate at the wrong time, and you're sunk. Now, try it again, and this time, when you go for the sternum, tuck your elbow in a bit more. And /don't/ crouch down to bite ... if someone has you by the throat for real, they're going to be cutting off your air as it is ... don't help them do it."

Once again, he tightened his grip on her.

At the killer instinct thing, George had to laugh, even if under her breath. She was definitely much more used to taking care of the before and after, not the actual killing. And it still wouldn't be easy to attack him - unless she really tried to pretend he was a bad guy. Maybe that worked.

She nodded at Logan's instructions, but raised an eyebrow at the last one. "Dude, I'm short. I had to bend otherwise my teeth wouldn't be anywhere near your arm!" And right as she said this she felt the grip tighten. Trying what he had told her, she didn't bend down and found she still could kind of bite him anyway, at least pick on the flesh and pull it. Hopefully it worked.

The stomping she already had down so it was easy, and then she bit her bottom lip, screwed up her face and elbowed him a little more towards the ribs.

Panting, she dropped her arms.

This time, the bite was less impressive, but the elbow to the sternum was MUCH better.

"Much better on the sternum shot. Don't worry about biting too much ... that's something you might not be able to do every time. It's more of an 'if the opportunity presents itself' thing. If you can't get your teeth into their forearm, turn your head and go for the bicep, or anything else that gets in range. Now. If the guy has a weapon, go for his fingers. Also, there's a spot on the underside of the wrist that if you put pressure on, at the very least the guy's going to be in a world of hurt, and will probably drop the weapon. If they're determined to play hardball, a finger to the eye'll drop 'em real fast ... not going to practice that one for obvious reasons, though." Logan quirked a grin at her.

"Now, I'm going to show you a move that will, hopefully, keep you from getting headlocked in the first place, if you're watching your surroundings." He dropped both arms from around her. "The /second/ you see an arm coming at you from the side, drop to a crouch and roll forward. They'll miss their grab, and your feet will be free to kick them in the knee or groin while they're still trying to figure out how to get their hands on you."

She had to admit: She was learning a whole lot she didn't know. And oddly enough being grabbed by a muscular older guy didn't feel that bad at all. Except for the throat pressure part.

She sniggered when he mentioned not wanting to train the finger to the eye thing. George wouldn't either, if she was him. Once Logan let her go she turned around to face him. "You know that sounds really badass." This one, she couldn't wait to try.

"It is. Best way to find the spot on the wrist is to practice on yourself." No WAY was Logan going to let her practice that on him. For one, that 'spot' was in a slightly different place on him than on most people, thanks to the claws ... and two, if she DID hit it ... the claws'd pop. Yeah, not good. "But I'll show you that duck and roll maneuver. Your turn to play attacker." She was nowhere near tall enough to get him by the throat without hanging off him like a monkey, but she'd at least be able to see how it was done.

Well she didn't know if she would or wouldn't practice on herself, because it felt like it might hurt. But she wasn't going to do it to Logan unless he asked her to.

George had to laugh when he told her to play attacker. What the hell was she supposed to do? "Um...Are you sure, Logan?" She had to ask. Because climbing Logan wasn't on her immediate plans and would look ridiculous. "Can't we just...Suppose I'm attacking you?"

"Yep, that works." Logan said. After a beat, he suddenly folded at the knees, tucking into a forward roll just before his knees hit the ground and landing more on his side than face down. He lifted one foot as if to kick, but didn't follow through with it, then rolled onto his back and sat up.

"Like that." He said.

George watched Logan do his thing with an incredulous expression that was borderline Hell no!, because for all intents and purposes, despite being thin, George was anything but athletic.

He got to his feet and dusted his hands off. "All right, your turn."

Well as long as perfection wasn't absolutely necessary. Shrugging, George went to stand in front of Logan. "Oooookay!" She said slowly. "Let's do this."

She cracked her knuckles and neck, and stood there waiting, trying to concentrate on spotting his arm approaching. It was what it was about, after all: focus.

Logan couldn't help a smirk when George cracked her knuckles and neck. Same damn thing he did when he was getting ready for a fight.

He kept it fairly simple, since this was her first time trying this, just walking up behind her, enough to one side that she'd be sure to catch sight of him in her peripheral vision, then reached out as if to grab her around the neck.

Okay so now it was a question of ducking and kicking him in the nuts when she saw his arm. No biggie. She could do that. It helped if she was hungry, but she could do it anyway.

And there it was. George slumped to her knees, crawled a little bit away from Logan and turned around, stretching her leg upwards towards the general vicinity of his 'manhood'. Of course she didn't kick. But the aim was there, kind of, in her opinion.

Logan nodded. "A little rough, but you've got the general idea down. Going to have to work on how fast you're able to do it, though ... maybe find a quicker way. Teach you how to fall so you don't hurt yourself, if nothing else."

"Second thing ... if you go for his nuts first, make DAMN sure you follow up with a kick to the knee. Try to take his kneecap out if you can. Getting kicked in the nuts hurts like a mother, but guys CAN still move and act, especially if they're motivated. Kick him in the knee and he won't be able to do a damn thing. If he's got a weapon, when he goes down, stomp the shit out of the hand holding the weapon and kick it away from him, especially if it's a gun. Knives are a touch less problematic because most people don't know how to throw them so they hit something blade first. If he's got a gun, he can still shoot you even with his legs taken out from underneath him, so get it away from him before you bolt for safety."

She could just as easily grab the dude's ankle and yank his soul out of him for ten seconds. That would stun him. Then again she'd have to stay put to yank it all back in.

"A kick to the knee?" George repeated, still sitting down looking up at Logan. Well, she could try. And the gun thing, she'd seen it in movies, she believed it wasn't that hard. "Yeah okay I can do that."

Which right away made a string of curse words roll out of George's mouth along with "OH MY GOD I THINK I BROKE MY FOOT WHAT THE FUCK'S IN YOUR KNEE IT FELT LIKE KICKING ROCK OH MY GOD!" And grab onto her foot making all kinds of faces.

Logan might be able to heal like nobody's business, but he still felt pain ... and that kick hurt like a sonofabitch. His leg started to come out from underneath him and only his training in dirty fighting and reflexes kept him on his feet, instead of falling on his face and landing on George ... which would have made the situation a whole hell of a lot worse.

"Shit, George. Lemme look at it. Damn. Sorry about that. I'd be one of those invulnerable superhero types." He wasn't going to explain about the adamantium if he could avoid it ... he'd freaked out Kaylee and Shannon, that was enough.

"This ain't the first time I been in a place like this." He told her. "Don't remember most of the first time, but among the other things they did to me, they coated my bones with metal. Sick fuckers knew they could do it 'cause I heal so damn fast from shit. Was a mistake to do that, though, 'cause it made me more or less unkillable ... unless you chuck me into the sun, but that'll kill pretty much anyone. I escaped shortly after they added the metal."
