Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:active, day 1: reboot, ianto jones, luke smith, sarah jane smith

Day One: 10:30 am
Who: Sarah Jane Smith, Luke Smith (and OPEN to passers-by)
What: Family Reunion
When: Day 1 - 10:30 am
Where: On the street outside Mickey's Diner
Rating: G?
Status: Active

Sarah Jane closed her journal with a loud thud on the table in the diner. It was crowded enough that she didn't think anyone had heard her. Everyone else was talking amongst themselves; she'd slipped into a booth just to check and see who else was here, what other names she remembered...and she'd found the one person she'd prayed never would end up here. Her son. Her Luke.

Glancing over toward the Doctor who wasn't quite her Doctor, and toward Remy, she slipped from her table and outside. She'd told Luke she'd wait for him on the street, so she'd be easier to find. She had to resist the urge to march down the street toward the shops and find him herself. Luke was 15, old enough to save the world, old enough to walk down a street and turn a corner. Even though she had told both the Management and Tonks he was only a child, Sarah Jane didn't consider him such. He was her son, yes, but he was his own person. A child was coddled. A child was kept safe from the monsters. Luke went after the monsters head on, just as she did.

She stood, facing the cross street she and Castiel had walked up earlier, the post office visible from the corner of one eye, the edge of the shops visible from the other. She hoped he wouldn't keep her waiting long. Because even though he wasn't a child, he was still her son, and she needed to see with her own eyes that he was, indeed, all right.

Luke shut the journal, pushing himself up from the counter top at the shop he'd managed to slip into. Quickly stashing the journal back inside his kit and starting off, almost impulsively to the location his mum had mentioned in the journal itself. He was already trying to work out how this place functioned; already having explored as much as he could in this first day alone with no real success so far. Faucets that didn't work, buildings left desolate and empty... Luke had to wonder what the point to all of this was; but hopefully his mum would be able to explain most of these questions riddling through his mind when he got to her. Luke was usually brilliant with puzzles, with these situations, but so far at least whatever point at them being here wasn't particularly a very clear one. If there had been anything he could have been hopeful toward it was his mum being here as well; it had come as nothing short of a relief to read her notes and even more know that they weren't alone here but others from the Dalek invasion had arrived too.

If anyone could solve this mystery, he had all the confidence in the world the group of them could. After leaving the shop behind, Luke hurried down the road. Shadows passing in the morning light around him through each empty shop; a feeling of must and an abandoned city in every place so far he'd so much as come across. His mind was buzzing with questions and riddled theories with the already determination so often the boy, now really only a handful of years old if it were to be considered in a completely straight foreword manner but well into the age of fifteen, often would show in so many of these situations.

Being raised as Sarah Jane's son had often found him adopting many of her morals and ways of viewing each difficult challenge after challenge whenever earth or each other might come into danger. Facing these things head on just as his mum might, just as Clyde or even Rani had. And as he turned the final corner of the block and came to the street intersecting with the diner he grinned and sped up, waving at the sight of his mum standing there, as if in fact the two had never been separated to begin with. Something unsettling as the last he could remember was heading to bed after saying goodnight to her. "Mum! Hey!" Luke called, all brown hair and blue eyes; dirty from waking up where he had and the places he'd explored, only slowing as he got even closer, still smiling despite himself. Relief coming in to him at seeing her again and more than that, seeing that she was in fact, also alright.

Sarah Jane grinned from ear to ear in relief at the sight of the smiling, waving boy. "Luke!" she called. She took a few steps toward him, then paused, not wanting to worry him too much by being too eager to see him. But, thank goodness, he seemed to be in one piece, if a bit dirty. If he'd been exploring, as he'd said, it didn't surprise her. And, not that she'd considered it till now, she was probably a bit dusty herself from that floor. Neither Castiel, nor Remy nor the Doctor had said anything, though, perhaps out of kindness, perhaps because they hadn't noticed. Didn't really matter. What did matter, right now, was her son, smiling, coming up to her.

"I'm so glad you're all right," she said, opening her arms for a hug. "I've been worried. The moment I saw your handwriting, I...." She trailed off, not sure what exactly to say. There was so little she remembered here, and she didn't want to worry him over her bad memory.

Luke embraced his mum, warmth and still relief that she was here, pulling back only when completely reassured not only she was here with him but really alright as well. It was invigorating and reassuring all at once; this for now despite the lack of real knowledge and the inkling he got alone from his mum appearing so afraid with the situation seeming almost like the countless of other times they'd saved the world or leaped head first into each passing danger if just to save another life and discover the truth. Sarah Jane's inquisitive mind seemed to have rubbed off on the teenager throughout his years alive and he found himself already trying to formulate a plan, staying close and stead fast to some of those teachings he'd learned again and again through each experience and adventure.

After all, well, there was always a way out. Always another way; whether difficult or not to comprehend and really see...He had full confidence for the moment in that.

"Me too," He agreed readily, still trying to smile at least a little reassuring. "And I'm alright, really, mum. I mean, a bit odd; didn't really expect this..." He admitted almost sheepish; for whatever reason Luke feeling as if he should have had some inkling to the kidnap or at least have figured out the location based on the quantities of information stored inside his mind...something to place them in the right direction and not left with nothing but this kit and odd theories. There was a guilt there at that, yet all the same he said all this on a lighter tone; still with the energy of seeing Sarah Jane again and hoping to lessen his mum's worry all at the same time. As much as she tried to hide it, Luke could still sense a bit of it; this alone already spurring on his determination and maybe a little reckless desire to share whatever weight his mum already had of this place reflected in her tone and demeanor... "But you're alright, right? And we'll get this sorted, just like you said, mum. With the others here too." Despite Luke still growing with normal interaction with people, he found himself almost hesitant to ask the questions he might usually find come foreword at a whim; concerned for his mum's sake and maybe bringing up memories she would rather not recall... He found himself to vividly pulling back to the time with her parents whom meant so much to her and the Trickster forcing her hand in a position she couldn't possibly go foreword with. "...But...what is this place?" He seemed to waver a moment, gaze flickering uncertain, "Have you been here before, mum...?"

While concerned Luke seemed also to somehow come across as a little curious; in a manner that Luke tended to approach a lot of things to reflect his blue eyes... As much as he worried for mum and typically would thrive off knowledge and exploration and had grown in adventure as well as his capacity to think quickly on his feet (not to mention dodge Sontaran Blasters) somehow there was this still this bit of naivety that still even to this day showed through his inquisitive face and questioning blue eyes at the best of times. While right now they were overshadowed by his hesitance and concern, it somehow still remained on the boy.

When he stepped into her arms, Sarah Jane squeezed him tightly, shutting her eyes in relief that it really was Luke and not some sort of trick. Now that she'd seen the Management's handwriting and remembered it for what it was, she didn't trust them not to use emotional relationships against them. But no, this was Luke, in the flesh, hugging her right back. She let go when he started to pull away, giving him another once over, just to make sure he really was in one piece.

She had to choke back a laugh when he started to apologize for not expecting their current predicament. "How could you?" she asked. "None of us could have expected we'd be here." She almost said 'again', but Luke wasn't here before. There had been a boy that reminded her a bit of him - the face swam to the front of her mind - but not Luke himself, thank goodness.

She smiled at him, forcing her thoughts back to the present, to the current predicament. "Yes, I'm fine. All in one piece." His confidence sounded much like what she'd said to the Doctor not too long ago. Except, Luke didn't know what she knew about this place, and so his was actual confidence, not bravado designed to hide insecurities. "Of course we will," she said, pulling him toward her again and clapping him on the arm. "All these brilliant inquisitive minds here? All these people who have innate curiosity and a desire to get home? Won't be long at all." She really hoped Luke couldn't hear the uncertainty behind those words.

When he asked her about before, she nodded. "I have. As to what it is...I'm not entirely sure." She wouldn't sugar-coat the situation, not for Luke. Keeping spirits up with false confidence was very different to hiding relevant information. "I remember the name of this place, and I remember some of the other prisoners," because that's what they were, no reason to deny it, "and how I felt about them, but not much beyond that. I'm not even sure how long ago I was here. It was after the Daleks...." She remembered now, talking about it, having to hide certain things from Rose and the Doctor, because they hadn't happened yet. And, she realized, that was still the case. "But I think before Rani moved in. I'm not entirely sure." Luke had mentioned Rani when he asked about their friends, so she knew he was at least from within a certain range of time. But she couldn't even be certain that the two of them were from the same point in time.

"Luke, what's the last thing you remember from home? The last major thing that happened to us?" she asked. If it was something she didn't know about, well, she'd deal. She had more experience with time-streams and such than he did. And she'd find a way to talk to Jack about it all later. Because, aside from the Doctor, he was the closest to an expert on such things here. And since the Doctor didn't remember, and was possibly earlier than before, she couldn't very well ask him.

Leaving the library was odder than Ianto expected it to be. While he knew that it was a deserted town from the posts of others, seeing it proved to be more disturbing than he thought it could be. It made it feel a bit like they were in some post-apocalyptic film, eeking out survival because there was no where else to go.

Right, Jones, time to stop thinking about that, right now.

He walked cautiously, eyes wide open and taking in details and couldn't help thinking that this was a place lost out of time. Maybe it was a limbo place from the Rift? The answer, while sensible, didn't quite ring right to him.

It took a bit, but eventually he found the diner and spotted the pair out front talking. That had to be Sarah Jane and her son, Luke.

((OOC: Hey guys, sorry so much for the wait. Work was pretty hectic this week.))

He looked back in return, still relief and intellegence and already working through what his mum had said. Luke couldn't be sure how long Sarah Jane had been here the last time around like she'd mentioned; but he did know he would have noticed if she had been missing. He could remember vividly when Maria had moved away to America and every day of his life backing to when he'd first been activated. And it was no wonder to him that every word he read, everything he saw came back in complete detail--in fact for Luke it was fairly normal. As normal as having a mum who saved the world and aliens and almost never having dreamed before.

"If it was then...how long do you think you were kept here?" Again he was pressing on through speeding thoughts; if it had been more than a few hours he would be able to place it. Unless...unless there was some kind of time travel involved or something even more complex than that. If it was, Luke would find the pieces; he was good at that. Getting them home with this group was something for now, he fully believed in. And if his mum had been here before with some of these people...wouldn't it mean they would leave again? Perhaps with more knowledge and Luke, Luke determined to look after her as well, trust her and watch his mum and her friend's backs the best he could.

He looked up to her at the question, brow for a moment furrowed in slight confusion. "Well....we'd just come back...from seeing Mrs. Wormwood. Kaagh and she...they fell into the vortex." He tried to work out why the question was asked, briefly concerned that there was a deeper reason behind that. "After that we went home. And...well, I woke up here."

He looked over as he spoke, distracted slightly as another man's footsteps came across the street. At first his mind leaping to whatever dangers his mum was warning of, worried about and obviously determined they defeat. However his eyes fell towards a face, one he recognized instantly at a spark inside his mind across the screen of a four way chat with the Doctor and his friends that came hurtling back to him. Luke standing, smiling and giving a slight wave to the man; still fairly close to his mum all the same. "Oh, uh, hi. You're Ianto Jones."

How long had she been here before? Sarah Jane wasn't quite sure, but it was a while. Perhaps not as long as Lexie's month, but still a considerable length of time. "I'm not sure," she said, frowning, as if she should be able to remember. "Less time than Dr. Grey, but not by much, I don't think. Three weeks? Three and a half?" But it didn't seem like time had passed at all at home - Luke would have mentioned if she'd been gone more than a few hours. Meaning this place was somehow out of time, like traveling in the Vortex. Another thing to discuss with the Doctor and/or Jack.

When Luke mentioned Mrs. Wormwood and Kaagh, she nearly sighed in relief. "That's the last I remember as well," she said, putting a hand on Luke's shoulder. "At least we're not from different points in time. That makes things...awkward." She was about to bring up the fact that the Doctor wasn't quite the same, when Luke's gaze shifted to somewhere behind her. She turned, instinctively putting out a hand to shield Luke from the newcomer, until she saw who it was.

"Ianto!" she called, her own wave mirroring Luke's, only with a bit more vigor behind it. She trotted the few paces' distance between them and opened her arms for an embrace, as she would for Jack or Rose. "I'm so pleased to see that you're all right."

"I am. Nice to meet you --oh. Sarah Jane!" The smile, it was the smile he remembered, like a little box opening in his mind, offering a little glimpse of things forgotten. But Sarah Jane's smile was brilliant. No one could forget that.

Obliging her, Ianto hugged Sarah Jane tightly for a moment before letting go. "Oh, that's bloody familiar. Is this your son?" A hand was stuck out for Luke, since he didn't think the boy would appreciate being hugged. Well. That and he didn't particularly want to hug the boy.

It was just a thing.

"I am happy to meet you, even if I'm sorry you've been popped into this mystery."

A friend of his mum's. That was definitely a good sign. He could only imagine they must have met just before, the last time others had been pulled to this place from the man's words. He smiled politely in return, taking the hand a little uncertainly.

"Uh, yea. I'm Luke. Sorry, but I'm guessing you've been pulled here before too?" Luke had a sort of air about him, something a bit open but also almost similar to his own mum's inquisitive nature and almost journalist manner of going about getting information. Looking curious but steadily to the man for some of the questions that were still racing through his mind that he could hope both his mum and him could provide. He was relieved and glad to see so many of mum's friends here, all together, and with them all he could at least believe they could figure all of this out. Work towards discovering the truth and stopping it before things gathered to what worry and fear he caught on from his mum. It was an every day sort of thing for Luke, saving the world, working out puzzles and mysteries; Luke who was still not yet just aware of how twisted this place could be...

Ianto's arms wrapped 'round her, and she squeezed back, happy to know her friend was indeed hale and whole, for the moment, at least. She grinned and stepped back, turning toward her son. "Yes, this is...." She trailed off as Luke introduced himself, shaking her head. Beaten to the punch.

At his question, Sarah Jane nodded. "Ianto was here with us before, although it seems both our memories are a bit spotty." She turned back to Ianto. "Rose and Jack seem to have better memories than we do. Have you talked with either of them yet?" She wasn't sure how much to mention based on what she'd read in their hurried writings over the journals. She didn't want to frighten Luke too much, but holding back information could have a negative impact on them all.

She wrapped an arm around Luke, pulling him closer to her. "Were you still thinking we should check the post office?" she asked Ianto. "I'd wanted to, earlier, but Castiel was so intent on finding his friends that I didn't want to take the detour." She frowned, a half-memory rising in her mind. "If we can get in, that is. Was it...could we...before?" She wondered if Ianto would remember any better than she did.
