Entry tags:connor temple, day 1: reboot, ianto jones, location: library

Who: Ianto Jones and Conner Temple
What: Rising and Shining in Vas Captio
When: Round 8 am
Where: The Library
Rating: PG - Can't imagine more than swearing going on
Status: Active

When he had fallen asleep the night before, it was after one of those work nights that pummelled him, inside and out.  Where the case being worked upon was an insane sort of mess that involved chasing things, getting smacked around, beaten up and wrenching his brain around for something resembling a sparkling solution and ending up with just an ending.  Which wasn't terribly bad, since it didn't involve (much) blood, but it did involve far too many hours awake.

Ianto had propped himself up against the wall, waiting for the coffee machine to drip enough caffeine into a cup so he could bloody shotgun it, just so he could make it to a bed.  His eyes had drooped closed for just a moment, really ....

... and he woke, propped up against what felt like shelves and with the scent of old books in the air.  At his feet was a tin kit with the words "Vas Captio" stamped on it.  Warily, Ianto bent to sort through it, brow wrinkled in thought as he glanced about very unfamiliar surroundings.  The strange part of this was that it felt like it should have been familiar.

But that was ridiculous.  He'd never been here before!  But why did it feel like he was forgetting something?  He was Ianto Jones!  He didn't forget!  Except the feeling continued to nag.

Connor had been having trouble falling asleep for some time. So when he finally did drift off, he didn't really expect it to be such a sound sleep. But he slept long and hard and when he woke up... No. No, that was definitely not right. Something was off. He didn't even have to open his eyes to know something was wrong.

He was curled up in a sleepy little ball, but he was wedged between two shelves full of books. Old, mildewed books with that smell that you sometimes found when you opened an old box you hadn't seen in years. But it smelled and looked familiar. Horrifyingly familiar.

What he'd thought was a dream... But he woke up. In said dream. Again. A recurring dream? Or some sick joke? Because there was that stupid kit by his side. Which meant in it was a journal. A journal he'd poured his heart and soul into. And his fears.

"Well how's that for deja vu?" he muttered out loud, touching his pants to find he'd been snagged from bed this time. At least he didn't wear something embarrassing to sleep, like just his shorts or worse...nothing! Flannel pants and a t-shirt were just fine, thanks. Even if said tee was his 'Welcome to the Dork Side' one.

He heard rustling nearby and paused. That would prove if it had been a dream or not. "Kimberly?" he called, half of him wanting to be right and half of him praying he was wrong. He'd cared about her, but he didn't want to be back here, either. And there was Abby to consider, even more so now. He'd thought it was a dream, it hadn't counted, God this was stupid.

Ianto crouched with a sock on his hand and his fingers poking out the hole and waggling a bit when he heard the voice. It wasn't a bad voice, as all things went. It sounded rather pleasant, actually.

"Ah, no, not Kimberly," he called back. It should be obvious it wasn't Kimberly, given that Ianto had a nice, rich baritone. Though, he supposed Kimberly could too, in certain circumstances.

Mind and feet wandering, as he tried to piece this together and to ignore the awful feeling of forgetting things (He was Ianto Jones! He NEVER forgot things! Honestly, what was wrong with his mind?!) he poked round till he found the source of the voice. Blinking a little, he lifted the socked hand in hallo, paused, then swapped hands, tucking the socked one behind his back. "Ah, hallo. Um. I'm .. Ianto. Like the t-shirt."

It wasn't her. Then maybe it was all a recurring dream after all. But the voice sounded familiar. Not a close friend of his--most of the people he'd befriended, save Tonks, had American accents and this one was distinctly British. Welsh, more than likely. But it was definitely familiar.

When the bloke raised his sock-covered hand, Connor had to hold back a giggle. Because frankly, he didn't find being back in that place funny in the slightest. He'd nearly died. Several times, actually. He got enough of that back home, he really didn't want it here, too. But it was a hand. With a sock on it. Bit like one of those puppets.

"There's a shirt called Ianto?" Seriously, Connor? Seriously? Was that honestly the first thing he could think to say? And then he realised Ianto was probably referring to the one he was wearing and he turned pink a little and shrugged. "Um, yeah. Hi. I'm Connor. You look familiar." Also probably not the smartest first thing to say, but hey, he was confused and a bit annoyed.

"There's a shirt called Ianto?" he repeated back, probably just as confused as Connor was, and blinked for a moment. "No! Well. There could be, but I doubt it. I'm Ianto and I like your shirt." Hopefully that would straighten things out a bit. Only a bit, at least.

Behind his back, Ianto yanked the sock off his hand, then hurridly stuffed it into a pocket. "Sorry. Um. Was examining the socks. You.. do too. Have we met before?" The question was a depressing one, to Ianto. He remembered people. Never forgot a face. Except this time, it seemed.

"And why are you in your jim jams?"

Connor couldn't help it. He didn't want to be back here, especially not without Kimberly, but he had to laugh. Not in a mocking way, just amused. May as well look on the bright side. "Sorry, slow moment there. Just uh... Yeah, never mind. You're..." He racked his brain. The man was familiar, the voice was familiar, but the name was slipping his head. "Jones." The bloke from the gym when he and the others were kids. That had actually happened? Impossible. But there he was in the flesh. And it was his library, unchanged. This was the guy who'd brought the snacks and stuff.

"Uh, yeah, I think we have," he agreed, trying to remember any other times he'd run into the Welshman, but couldn't, not right away at least. "Here, actually. Which I didn't think could possibly be real. So..." Ugh. This was ridiculous.

As Ianto's last statement sank in, so did the pink in Connor's cheeks. "Um. I'm guessing they took me from bed. While I was asleep, you know?" Not that he ever got to do anything else in bed. Insert annoyed and frustrated Connor there, yeah.

"Jones, yeah. We have met before then. I am forgetting things, then." The last was quiet, more to himself than anything, and it made Ianto frown mightily. For a moment, at least. Pummeling his brain didn't seem to do too much, so he gave that up with an explosive sort of sigh.

"Well," he said, glancing at Connor's pajamas again, "I'd assume that. I mean... You aren't naked. So, sleep, yeah?" Oh, god. Did that actually come out of his mouth? Ianto looked faintly mortified for a moment, but it was true, wasn't it? "I was asleep, too. Only, sort of .. propped up in a corner. And fully dressed." As evidenced by his rumpled suit.

Connor was almost purple from Ianto's comment. This was so not the way to get to know someone. Even if Ianto had remembered the first time they'd been there, which he didn't seem to, he wouldn't have known Connor well. They'd only talked casually over the journals, bits and pieces. It was slowly coming back to him, and he knew that much.

"Dozed off for a snooze, then?" he asked quickly, desperate to change the subject from his jammies, or lack thereof. "It might come back to you. Unless..." Like the anomalies. Like Claudia Brown. "You might see if someone you know really well is here. Find out where you came from then. It's possible... Time travel. Never going to make any sense."

Ianto wanted to grin, but he hid it and looked away, presumably studying their surroundings. Not that they were interesting. He did reach over and prod at several of the books thoughtfully.

"Yeah, I did, that. We had had a very busy day and I needed to brew coffee to wake up enough to go home..." He wasn't sure if people in real life had days like that, to be honest. Finally, Ianto pulled down one of the books to flip through. If nothing else, it could be used as tinder, he reckoned.

"Dunno if it'd come back to me," he said, regarding Connor with a rather sober look. "I'd rather I forget this and wake up by my coffee pot. Think we should go and .. find people, then?"

Connor wished he didn't have that kind of day all the time. Though he'd take a strong cup of tea or a soda before coffee most days. Except those days Rex kept him up gnawing on his ears and then Danny expected him to come up with a theory or formula by the end of the day.

Odd. Danny hadn't been on the team the last time he'd been here, had he? No, no the more he thought about it, he hadn't. How did that work?

"Most of them are in pretty miserable condition," he commented randomly, as Ianto poked at a book or two. "You'll find most of the things in this...place are. There's a couple of good ones here and there, though. You just have to look." They'd been kidnapped and he was talking about books. Brilliant, really.

Should he leave? It was a good question. Part of him wanted to haul arse and run. Find the center of town and get out of there as quickly as possible. But there was still a little twinge of hope in him. "I don't know," he admitted. "Most of the people I know here...they'd know to find me here. This is sort of where I stayed last time." Except the time in the gym. But he wouldn't have been able to keep Kimberly safe there. Almost instinctively, his eyes drifted to the office room they'd shared, but of course, it was empty. He had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach; what if she was already dead?

"Yeah, they are pretty wretched, aren't they?" One of the books was pulled free and Ianto felt at the pages, trying them to see how dry they were. He hated the idea, but they could burn books at night. For warmth, if it got cold and for light. Because who knew what would be here in the dark? Ianto tucked the book firmly under his arm and nodded. "They'll make good kindling, at least, if we can find a lighter. I'm going outside, I think. Wasn't ever the type to sit in one place waiting to be found." Ianto offered Connor a quick grin. "Probably not a good thing, I suppose."

Ianto began to poke his way round the shelves, looking for an exit of sorts. They could find whomever it was that made Connor's eyes look so sad, he figured.

The bibliophile in Connor winced at the thought of burning the library's collection, but he knew it might be necessary and he simply nodded. He remembered being cold. Very cold. One of the last days he remembered being there had been nearly freezing. He'd had to raid a thrift shop for shoes and coats and blankets. And he'd brought them back...well, here, actually. Roaring fires would've been lovely, why hadn't anyone thought of that before?

"Depends on who's looking for you, I suppose," he agreed with a shrug. "Sometimes I think it's probably better to go off searching for others. But...if the person I'm trying to find shows up at all, it'll be here." It hadn't been much, but they'd made it into home. And no way in hell was he leaving her to figure it all out for herself. Not again.

"Be careful out there, yeah?" he asked, already heading towards the door. At least that much of the layout hadn't changed. He gave the heavy door a pull and looked outside, almost as if he was expecting to see a load of people there waiting hopefully. Instead, the artificial feel of the environment settled around him and he sighed.
