Who: Jack Harkness and Rose Tyler
What: Rose could use some common sense right now...who knew it'd be Jack?!?
When: Day 23, Late afternoon
Where: The Gym
Rating: Rated Jack for crudeness, swearing, and potential leering ;)
Status: Active

The bodies were gone, but the memory of them lying there still lingered. Rose could close her eyes and easily picture her best mate's future self, or Chris' dead mother. Who the hell were these people that they even had the ability to do it? And why, if they were so keen on studying people and their reactions, would they be so willing to let them die?

And the most terrifying thought in her head...could Chris possibly be next?

She'd been taking shifts by that point, watching over the sickly Whitelighter. She and Connor tended to switch on and off, but sometimes they sat and shared idyll chit chat. Why not? It was likely going to be a long night for anyone who cared at all about Chris. And there really wasn't much they could do except keep the wound as clean as possible and get fluid into him. At that point, it was basically wait and see.

But waiting meant time to think, and thinking wasn't exactly beneficial for her. She thought about the Time Lords, both of them, and what they meant to her future self. She thought about home and how much she missed her mum, and even Mickey. She thought about a future without the Doctor and hated Remy LeBeau all over again. Really, it wasn't a good day to be Rose, was it?

Leaving Connor at Chris' side, she wandered the gym, afraid to go any further than that. If the worst happened, she'd be there. She wouldn't be one of those who ran in fear when the darkness came. If travelling with the Doctor had taught her nothing, it was to face fear and pain and death head on. He'd survived the loss of his entire planet; she could face losing one person, no matter who it was. Even when the day came that it'd be him.

The thought caused her to choke up all over again. She stood at the front door to the gymnasium, looking out at the suffocating darkness. She was sure the sun would have to come back up sooner or later. But who would still be around to see it?

For the time being, Martha's body had been moved into a spare area of the museum until they could figure out what to do with the bodies. The longer the day wore on, the worse the smell got and Jack was wondering what they should do with them. If they didn't want the stench to start permeating, they either needed to bury or burn -- but something had to be done and soon.

Wanting to see what the state was elsewhere, Jack left the museum and stepped out into the oppressive heat still wearing his greatcoat. Why yes, Jack Harkness was a masochist. Coat open and shirt mostly unbuttoned, Jack walked through the darkness, ignoring the heat as best as he could. Winding his way through, Jack found the gym appearing in the distance and the closer he got, Jack realised it was Rose standing in the doorway.

God, he'd never been so happy to see her. Maybe she had actually listened to him when it came to behaving. He raised a hand in greeting, smiling at her. Maybe some good could come of the day -- well, outside of the norm of 'good' things.

First instinct told her to just throw herself into those familiar arms and weep for a bit, but she'd already done her share of that a few days before. Now, Rose only offered Jack a weak smile and a nod of her head, instinctively turning a bit to check that the situation behind her in the gym was the same. Everything seemed fine, but lord knew how quickly that could change. So she didn't stray, only wiggled her fingers at him in a gesture to urge him over.

After all, he'd known the other man. And he knew him well enough to know that he hadn't really gone. It was something she needed just then, a solid figure who couldn't die. Even if that was the greatest curse for anyone to manage that she could think of. It helped her at the moment, and the selfish part of her treasured that.

"Busy?" she called as he got closer, tilting her head in what she hoped was an inviting way. She wouldn't blame him for not wanting to come closer. The place still reeked of death.

In all honesty, Rose should have given into that first instinct of hers. THe moment he saw that weak smile (or, as best as he could see in the darkness), Jack knew there was trouble. He quickened his pace, almost at a jog now, and slid his coat off his shoulders. Jack draped the coat over his arm and finally got to her.

"Not at all," Jack replied with his typical grin. "Actually was coming out to find my favourite companion." As, well, the other one was decomposing in the museum. Right.

But Rose had no knowledge of Martha and wouldn't for several years. More for her than for most, as time passed differently in the world she'd find herself in before long. That didn't mean she'd want anything to happen to the woman, and she'd certainly not want her to up and turn into a zombie. Especially a decaying one.

But since no one would bother to tell her about the future she was about to live, she could only smile up at Jack, small though it was. "No, you weren't," she commented with a teasing look. "But it's sweet of you to say so." Stretching up on her toes, she kissed his cheek lightly. "Glad you're here, though."

Hey now, Jack at least had told her a lot of the future and things that were to come. At least Jack was telling her things and wasn't keeping secrets from her. So he should get points for that. Hell, she knew more about Jack than most people (save one Ianto Jones).

Jack turned his head after that kiss on his cheek, bestowing one on her lips instead. "How do you know?" Jack asked, lifting an eyebrow. "Wanted to check up on you... not to mention I think I wore Ianto out this afternoon." Jack wrapped his arms around Rose, enveloping her in a hug. "You all right?"

Her cheeks flushed a bit at the touch from his lips, but she didn't fight him. Nor did she turn away from the offered hug. She leaned into his hold, letting strength she didn't have consume her. "You're awful," she told him, though the words were muffled against his shirt. "Poor man's too good for you to keep him bedbound. You know most people wait until night, don't you?"

Well. Who was she kidding? If she had someone, she'd be taking advantage of every moment she could. Not to mention as far as this place was concerned, it was still night.

"I've been better," she admitted, finally pulling back, but only enough to look up at him. She felt a bit like a parasite, feeding off of his strength, but she didn't mind much. She just had to hope he didn't, either.

Rose not fighting Jack or even making a comment about the kiss meant that something was wrong. They'd spent enough time together and had grown close enough that Jack could tell the moment something was bothering Rose. The only bad part was that Rose could tell when something was the matter with him. Damn those things for working both ways. "I'm not awful. He's the one with the dirty mind. Don't let the suits fool you for a moment." Jack chuckled, the sound resonating through his chest. "If you haven't noticed, it currently is night right now so I'm well within my rights to shag and be shagged by my lover." Jack lightly kissed the top of her head. "Besides... cutting down to only four times a day doesn't seem fair."

And no, Jack wasn't exaggerating either. Jack wasn't sure if he should be disturbed that Vas Captio had improved his sex life.

Sitting down on the ground, Jack tugged Rose down and into his lap, cuddling her against his chest. He didn't care that she fed off his strength -- at least he was able to help someone. That was all that mattered. "What's wrong, Rosie? Tell your captain everything."

Her nose wrinkled at the comment regarding his 'adventures' with Ianto. As much as she adored them both? She really didn't need to know. Not only because ew, who wanted to put too much thought into that? But also because she was, admittedly, a little jealous.

But that was neither here not there when she was pulled into that warm, comfortable spot in Jack's lap. It was easy to accept the snuggles he offered when all she wanted was to sleep for a month. "Don't call me Rosie," she said first, grinning a bit. Not that she really minded, but sometimes it was good to remind Jack who was in charge. Or, at least make him share power.

"What's wrong?" she asked, then, chuckling softly. "You mean other than waking up with a non-dead dead guy who's the future version of the bloke I love to bits and by the way, did I mention the bloke I'm snogging got bitten by his own zombie mother and is terribly sick and God help me if he turns into one of them?"

It wasn't Jack's fault that Vas Captio had been a help to his sex life! And it wasn't his fault that he and Ianto had appropriated as many bottles of slick from the chemist's as humanly possible and kept them under the proverbial lock and key. And really, it wasn't too bad watching two men kissing -- a lot of women did find it attractive.

Jack would always be there to offer Rose the cuddles she needed. This was what he was here for and he always would be here for her. "How about Rosie-Posie?" Jack asked. "Or Wosey? Or..." Jack frowned. "No, I can't keep that going. Sorry." There also was no getting Jack to share power either. He liked having it thank you very much.

"Well," Jack rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "Sounds like you're having a bit of a day."

Some women did. Rose did, if she let herself think about it. But it was a bit different when she actually knew the blokes in question. They could show affection all they wanted, and she'd find it beautiful. But that didn't mean she could sit and listen to talk of their lovemaking and not be a bit burned by it.

But he was there and he was comfortable and she? Was feeling weak. The otherwise strong Time Lord's companion was now just another victim of this awful place. She was tired and she was ill and she just wanted to go home. So what if it made her sound about ten? She was still practically a kid as it was.

"A bit of a day?" she snorted, tucking her head under his chin. "That's a bit of an understatement, love. I swear, this place is going to make me mental long before it kills me." Then again, maybe that was their point.

Wasn't Jack's fault that his lover was here with him in Vas Captio and it also wasn't his fault that, strangely, they were closer here than they'd been back in Cardiff. And, really, Rose was to blame for it as she was the one who said Jack should start saying the "L" word more often. Consequently, Ianto was more apt to pounce following such admissions, even if his stock response tended to be 'I know'.

Bastard.

"I'm a master of the understatement. It gives us a place to start from and go up from there," Jack replied, rubbing the top of her head with his chin. "It'll only make you go mental if you allow it to make you mental. Yes, I know that was profound, wasn't it?"

Rose rolled her eyes at his oh-so-deep statement. Actually, she would've stuck her tongue out at him if he were anyone else. But Jack, being Jack, would likely have considered it an invitation. As much as she adored him, and despite the little part of her that still fancied him, she believed a relationship needed loyalty. Even if Ianto were willing to let her snog his partner, she wasn't going to. Just not her way.

"I appreciate your very astute observations, Captain," she teased, grateful to be able to tease despite the events of the day. "I just don't... How? How does this place even function?" Sighing, she shook her head before hiding back in that warm place against his chest. His bare chest, thanks to that mostly unbuttoned shirt. Crazy how that didn't bother her in the slightest. Any other man she'd have started snogging five minutes ago.

"Have you heard? We're talking again, the Doctor and me. I... He just showed up this morning when I woke up to... You know. He was there when I needed him. Like always. Like nothing had changed, or would change." Oh, hell. The tears were in danger of falling again. Dammit. "And I love him for it, but something's going to show up someday and take him away from me and...how am I supposed to make it through that?"

Sorry, Jack. You were the first honest ear she'd had to bend in quite some time. Just tolerate her, pat her on the head, and feel free to send her on her way.

It was a very deep statement, thank you very much! And Rose should have stuck her tongue out at Jack, he would have liked very much to take advantage of the situation. The funny thing, and it's nothing Jack will ever admit to -- but Jack may take a snog from Rose, but that's as far as he'd take it. Yes, the man had finally found the joy in a monogamous relationship. Thank you very little Vas Captio.

Jack shook his head. "I... have no idea. If I did, I'd be getting all of us out of here post haste." Jack threaded his fingers through Rose's hair with a sigh. Amazing how they could sit together almost like a couple but with very little sexual tension between them. That's not to say, of course, that if Rose's hands started wandering that Jack wouldn't be happy to oblige her.

"No, I haven't heard!" Jack grinned. Maybe his matchmaking would work after all. Jack just ignored that weird nagging feeling that the Doctor wasn't speaking at all to him. Lightly, Jack kissed Rose's forehead. He wasn't going to just tolerate her and send her on her way. That wasn't Jack's way at all -- he was here for her, no matter what. "You'll make it through, Rose. And if I have to hazard a guess, he won't leave you unless he had to. And even then it wouldn't be of his own accord."

No spoilers. REALLY.

Too bad, Jack was better at keeping spoilers than Nine and Ten were. Someone also really needed to teach Rose the difference between the two. His matchmaking efforts were completely wasted. It wasn't the quiet, angsting man she'd been referring to at all. She'd gotten a hastily scribbled 'Stay safe', and that's the last she'd heard of him. Jack was, sadly, making much more progress on that front.

"He doesn't," she admitted softly, fear pricking at her yet again. "Leave me because he wants to, I mean. The Doctor--the one I know, I mean--already told me. We're separated. And..." Dammit, there they were. The burning tears trickling down her face. Easier to hide against Jack's skin than let him actually see, though he had to know based on damp cheeks alone. "And I don't know how to move on. I know it's not that time yet, and I know I should just...deal with it as it comes. I don't have any other choice. But I can't help thinking it just shouldn't happen."

There was, at least, some comfort in knowing it wouldn't be because he'd grown tired of her and just up and left her. After throwing her entire life in his hands, literally and figuratively, nothing would hurt more than just being left behind for no reason at all. "Sorry," she mumbled between sniffles. "I...just been a long day, s'all."

Well, all of Jack's hard work of keeping Rose spoiler free was about to go out the window. Particularly when she started saying things like that. Jack refused to think that his matchmaking was going to waste at all and he was determined to get Rose and the Doctor back as they should be. He'd do it or die trying and well... so much for that threat, right?

"No need to apologise, love." Jack looked at her, gently brushing the tears away from her eyes with his thumbs. "You're separated because he sends you back to Earth because it's almost certain death that we're facing." Jack spoke without thinking, knowing that after everything, Rose finally has a right to know. "But you go back, Rose. You find a way back and you're the one who saves us all in the end." And damn me to hell in the process. Jack lightly kissed her forehead. "None of us ever travel with the Doctor and just... move on. I waited a hundred years for him to come back to Cardiff after you two left me on board Satellite 5. He told me later the TARDIS never would have accepted me on board because of what had happened."

This may or may not have been Jack's story to tell -- but something told him he was about to tell it anyway.

Well, Rose knew that bit. Getting sent home. She gave a sardonic laugh, annoyance dripping from it. "Oh, I know that, alright. Getting sent home like a little kid. Don't sit at the grown-ups table for Christmas dinner, don't play with sharp objects, don't use the stove, don't stay and fight the Daleks with the people you care about." She shook her head, heaving a sigh. No, she knew it had been done for her safety. And a part of her knew it was because of how much the Doctor cared about her. If he hadn't, he'd have let her die with the rest of them. But he'd sent her home, to safety, to live a life he couldn't.

That didn't make her entirely less bitter. She just...was. A little. Still. But, if the bits and pieces she was putting together from Jack's tales and the Doctor's words were true, if she hadn't gone home and then returned, they'd have all died, all three of them.

But at least they'd have been together.

She winced, though, when he said he'd been left. "We just up and left you?" she blurted, annoyed. "But...there had to be a way. I mean, she can be finicky, but she's usually so accepting... He'd have found a way, wouldn't he?" She shook her head, a little appalled with what her trusted companion had done. Forcing Jack to fend for himself? Not pleased. Not pleased at all.

Jack shook his head. "No, not like a little kid," Jack said, voice a bit harsher than he intended. "Or, at least, I highly doubt he'd have sent you home for such a reason. I'd have loved for you to be with us, Rose, but it was a suicide mission. He wanted you safe and if I have to wager a guess, he'd have made a bargain that he'd keep you safe. So, for that, you had to go home."

Jack still remembered his own reaction, thinking she had left her post in order to take a leak. Still, Jack had held out a bit of hope that they'd get through this okay -- but the moment Rose was gone, he knew they wouldn't be getting out of this alive. Hell, he'd known long before, why else did he give the Doctor and Rose that goodbye kiss?

"I see that stupidly noble look in your eyes. I'd made my choices long ago, I was ready to die. You, God Rose, you had so much coming. That's why he sent you back."

Jack swallowed at that, drawing his lower lip into his mouth. "Not... for a freak of nature," Jack replied softly. "What happened to me... when the Daleks were killed. Life was given and life was taken away, though I don't fault what happened any longer. You didn't--" Jack broke off abruptly and quickly changed directions with his story.

FUCK.

"I became a fixed point in time," Jack said in a rush, "and even now the Doctor doesn't like looking at me. Hell, when he finally showed up in Cardiff, I clung to the outside of the TARDIS. She went to the end of the Universe in an attempt to shake me off."

Rose's eyebrows lifted at his hurried change in subject. She knew the Time Agent, whether he liked it or not. Knew him inside and out, long hours spent chatting and flirting long before they'd come to this stupid place. She was on to him. "So you faulted it before, did you? The uh...person who caused it? Your...you know. The not dying thing?" She didn't what, Jack? She was going to get it out of him, and that's all there was to it. Had her return to the satellite somehow caused all he was talking about? The Doctor had said she'd saved his life. Had she somehow saved Jack, as well?

Despite herself, she smirked at the image he painted of himself, holding on to the TARDIS as she whirled through the Vortex. Probably got himself in more trouble than it was worth, knowing him. And her. Crazy blue box that she was. God, she missed it already. If it was this hard on her, it must have been hell for the Doctor. Both of them.

And that only reminded her that one day? She wouldn't be calling that box home. Dammit.

"She rejected you because you were hanging on to the outside of her, you git," she teased. "No woman likes that, surely you knew that." Would the TARDIS have allowed him inside? Surely, she would have. But only if the Doctor had trusted him. Hmm. Mysteries she couldn't solve without talking to that other Doctor. Not something she was thrilled about.

Really, did Rose HAVE to know him so bloody well? Really, they could go back to the old days when he was a con, out to get into her jeans and when she didn't know him whatsoever. Jack would be happy about that. Then again, he supposed it was his cross to bear: he knew the Doctor inside and out when he was hiding things, rose knew him. Not fair, but there you had it.

"I..." Jack drew his lips together, biting them while he considered his answer. "I did. It took me a long time to realise I couldn't die. I tried all manners of things from the simple to the extreme. And everytime I came back, I did curse what happened to me." And now to apologise without apologising directly. "Eventually I learned to accept and realised it wasn't such a bad thing." Jack had left enough clues that Rose should be able to piece it together. He just didn't want to be the one to tell her -- not because he didn't want to, but he wasn't sure he could get through it without his voice cracking or dong something else suitably embarrassing.

Jack rolled his eyes. "She did not. I'd been waiting a hundred years for him. I called out and he tried leaving without me, so I ran and I jumped. Figured there wasn't much that could kill me so why not try an otherwise suicide mission?" Jack flashed a grin, pulling Rose in close against his chest. "I thought women liked having a man wrap themselves around her. Silly me for assuming such." That smile morphed into a smirk. "So you'd try tossing me away if I tried wrapping my legs around you then?"

Best to keep those thoughts to yourself, Jack. This lot here could probably make you relive that moment. And, as willing as Rose might've been, the Doctor would've still stood in the way, all possessive and wise and not allowing her to go making mistakes. And there'd be no Ianto, either. Besides, seeing him in full uniform again would probably just get constant chants of 'are you my mummy?' stuck in her head again. So he'd just have to settle for having Rose after she'd travelled with him on the TARDIS, talked to him for hours when the Doctor was tinkering with his hammer in the console room, and become closer to him than most everyone.

It did have something to do with her. He hadn't come right out and said it, and she loved him for it. Her Jack would never directly place the blame, not right to her. She couldn't imagine the hell he went through. Actually, no, she could. There'd been plenty of times she'd thought about it, how it must be to have to live so much longer than everyone else. Of course, she'd thought of all of that only on knowing the Doctor's age, and not his unlikeliness to die, but still. And for it, she merely remained silent, nestling in closer to Jack.

Which wasn't hard to do when he pulled her close, getting all sassy as Jack Harkness tended to do. She rolled her eyes, bending her leg to give him a light kick with her toe. "Women prefer to wrap themselves around a man, thank you very much. If you tried hanging on to me, I'd head to the end of the universe to be rid of you, too." Peeking up, she smirked before hiding her face again. "Cause you're too big and we'd both fall over, see."

Dangerous territory, Jack. Rose was in this place with far too many good-looking blokes for you to be using words and phrases like that around her!

They probably could, but why would they want to send Jack back to a relatively happy moment in his life? Seemed like it was better when he was being emotionally and mentally tortured by the management as opposed to being sent back to the happier moments in his life. If it could be called happy. Anyway moving on from that. Still, as annoyed as Jack could be with Rose, he still liked the fact that there was someone outside of his lover who knew him so well. Things seemed different with the Doctor, though Jack was like a whipped puppy who would return to his master's side even after he got smacked on the nose with a newspaper.

Yes, it did have something to do with her but Jack couldn't come out and say it. He couldn't place the blame on her shoulders and didn't want her to blame herself either. Jack loved her far too much. There was a difference between Jack and the Doctor -- there would come a day that the Doctor would die. Right now, Jack didn't think he would ever die. He was a fixed point in time and space, he wasn't going to change and if he did change it would be veeeeeeeeery sloooooooowly.

He took comfort in her closeness, breathing in that scent that was so uniquely Rose. "Hey watch the kicking," Jack chided, giving Rose a light smack on the rump. "Might hit something important there." Even though she was far away from that, he could still make the joke. "as evidenced by the way you're wrapping around me." Jack gave her a brief squeeze. "But not all women dislike a man wrapping around a woman. Not to mention men as well." Aka, Ianto. But Jack was going to be good and not say a word about him. "Well, that's why the wrapping around usually takes place when you're on the ground. Oh how coincidental -- just like we are now!"

Jack knew exactly what he was doing -- he always did.

As well as the Doctor knew them all, he couldn't share this sort of closeness with them. In many ways, Rose felt he looked on them all as an outsider would. Like a dad at a kids' party, watching but not getting too close. She suspected it was caused in part by his extremely long life span. No matter how he cared about them, they were going to die. Well... Jack was, when he'd met them. But at the time, it had been why Rose had been so eager to get to know Jack, and had told him more than she probably should have. And it was why even the Doctor wouldn't know certain sides of her, and wouldn't until years after Rose's current time, when she'd desperately demand he tell her he loved her.

For the moment, though, all she had was Jack. And, really? It wasn't a bad trade. He was terribly fit, even if he was another bloke's man. Minor detail. At least she got moments like this one! "Please," she scoffed, and for giggles, she shifted so she was straddling his lap, basically like he'd intended. Typical damn man, always got his way. "You may be larger than most men, but you aren't that damn big." She rolled her eyes and placed her index finger against his lips before he could come up with some smartass remark. "You'd just have to bottom full time, then, wouldn't you?"

Oh, she could be crude, too, Jack. So there.

"And you know," she added, a smirk crossing her face. "I'm surprised at you. I tell you I'm snogging some bloke and you don't even ask who he is? What sort of protective best mate are you?" But Rose placed both hands against his face and kissed his forehead. She'd needed this more than she could possibly say.

On that, Jack would have to agree with Miss Tyler. There were times that Jack had thought he had gotten beyond that tough outer exteriour the Doctor had concocted around himself and there were others when Jack felt like he hadn't gotten anywhere with him. Part of Jack wondered if it would have gotten easier once he was made immortal but it seemed the 'abomination' bit tended to get in the way of a few things such as getting close. Rose didn't know everything about Jack -- but then again, Ianto didn't know everything either. But of everyone here? They did know the most.

Jack was very fit -- in more ways than one. And while he may have been happily taken, Jack had his appetites and he liked being able to flirt around; particularly when one considered that his lover didn't mind either. Hell, Ianto would probably want to be included at some point, knowing him. Kinky bastard and Jack so loved him. Jack's hands settled on Rose's hips, shifting just enough to press against her as he wanted. "I think..." Jack rolled his hips, talking around that pesky finger, "all evidence to the contrary about my a, not being larger than most men and b, this assessment that I'm not that damn big."

Oh her crudeness wasn't bad. But don't try and enter into a competition with Harkness, Tyler. You'll lose.

"Who said anything about always bottoming. It's called topping from the bottom, sweetheart."

Jack had the good sense to look abashed. "My assumption was the Doctor. If it's someone else, I think I'll be stapling their lips shut. Assuming I can find a stapler of course." Jack closed his eyes, leaning into her touch with a contented sigh. Frankly, they both needed this. "So, then, who is the bloke I have to castrate?"

Admittedly, with anyone else? This whole scenario would be one hell of a turn on. She was only human, after all. And it had been a while and Rose was emotionally a great big mess that day. But she also knew Jack. And she'd spent plenty of time talking to Ianto. And as much as the two of them might enjoy her little flirtation with Jack, she'd never come between them. Even if she did enjoy the occasional moment like this one.

Besides, she knew ways to his heart. Well... His head. Not the one on his neck, either. "I happen to know," she said with a smirk, especially when he gave her yet more proof of exactly how 'big' he was, "that you're not so large that if I kick your shins, I'll disman you." An innocent, darling look crossed her face as she slung her arms around his neck playfully. "And if you can't function anymore? You won't be topping from any direction."

Jack had thought she'd been snogging the Doctor? Huh. Hardly. A dark look crossed her face and she slid off of his lap with a sigh. "The Doctor? You're kidding, right?" She gave a sarcastic laugh. "He's barely looked at me since...you know. The tall, skinny one, I mean. The one who..." She flicked her tongue over her lower lip as she wrapped her arms around her knees. The one who'd kissed her. Damn men.

But Chris... Chris was something to think about. Someone to care about. It might not have been the attachment she craved, but it was affection, and sweet affection at that. And she'd grown to care about him quickly, and if he didn't make it through this, she knew she'd be hurt. But the thought of him still made her smile. "His name is Chris, and I don't recommend stapling anything. You'd have me to deal with. I'm a big fan of those lips." She nestled into his shoulder with a small smile. "He's this huge sweetheart, Jack. And he's so sick..." She glanced over her shoulder towards the gym. Surely if anything had gone wrong, Lexie or Connor or someone would've told her. Right? "And he doesn't kiss me then turn my entire world upside down and then ignore me," she added with a bitter look.

Rose Tyler? Was a little bit conflicted.

It'd be a hell of a turn on with anyone else? Oh Rose, don't let Jack ever hear that... he'd be hurt beyond all recognition. Jack did know that Rose would never come between himself and Ianto. Back in Cardiff, he probably would have done anything and everything in his power to figure out why she wasn't hopping into bed with him -- but here and after everything he'd been through... Jack was turning into a one-man man. Didn't mean, however, that he would turn time of cuddling away either.

Rose did know ways to his head... both of them. "You don't know that for sure," Jack replied, adopting an air of innocence. "You might injure me and then, well, Ianto'll be fairly ticked at you." Jack leaned his head forward, nipping at her lips with a grin. "You'd really like to knock your captain down a peg like that? Particularly when he likes being the peg?"

God, why was he so adamant that Rose and the Doctor be together? Right... because he knew what happened. Knew that Rose had to care enough about him to want to leave that Parallel world and come find him. If they got out of here -- things had to be set right.

"Name's Chris, eh?" Jack said, rubbing his chin. "Well, I'll have to have a bit of a 'chat' with him soon. something along the lines of if he even thinks of doing anything, he has to get through me first. And you know first-hand just how indestructible I really am." Jack followed her line of sight, the teasing expression leaving his face when he saw her concern. "Rose Tyler -- you know full well that you wouldn't have it be 'easy'. It's the hard that makes it good." He smiled, lightly kissing her cheek.

"Besides, I could always turn your world upside down... and usually do, I know... and ignore you -- and you'd still come back to me."

Jack? Egotistical? Never.

She'd knock Jack Harkness down as many pegs as she liked if he kept that up. Sliding off of his lap, Rose settled at his side, nestling herself against his side. Just because she didn't want to be that close didn't by any means mean she didn't need the closeness he offered. "Jack, I spent my entire life without a dad to get in the way, and Mum always trusted my choices. Don't you go ruining this for me." Well. Jackie had almost always trusted her. And the one time she'd put up a fight had been Jimmy Stone. And she had been right to. But that was different! Chris wasn't like Jimmy at all.

Then again, how well did she actually know the guy? Still... "Just don't grill him, Jack, please? I'm just getting to know him, I don't need my big bad immortal military man scaring the crap out of him. Besides..." she added with a wicked little grin, "he's a witch. He's magical. Wouldn't want to take that on, would you?" She looked up at Jack with a smirk, tweaking his chin with her thumb and forefinger. "And so freaking hot, while we're at it."

And not the Doctor. Either of them. Because as much as she loved Jack, he'd never once made her feel the way that damn alien did. No matter how hot he was. But she could support his ego just the same. Or...well, maybe not. Someone had to keep him in line. "Besides, Jack, I know you think you're the greatest thing since Raxacoricofallapatorian bread, but...no. You've never hurt me like that and if you did...I wouldn't be fawning all over you, that's for sure."

But it wasn't nice to knock Jack down pegs. He didn't like it and he didn't take too kindly to being knocked down either. He liked being right where he was, thank you very much. Jack grumbled when Rose slid off his lap so he did the next best thing, shifted so that he had a leg on either side of her, chin resting on her shoulder. And, once again, he was back to being perhaps far too close for comfort. Again. As always.

"I'm not ruining anything, I'm just making sure you're taking care of yourself," Jack replied. "And best of all, you can threaten to cut my head off if you get pissed at me and it'll grow right back!" The mocking smile faded as Jack craned his head around a bit further to actually look at Rose. "Big bad immortal military man scaring the crap out of him? Now, would I ever do a thing like that?" Jack asked innocently. "I would never, ever, ever do that. And even if I would... what do I care about some guy who is magical? What part of 'big bad immortal military man' did we forget about?" Jack pouted then. "Come on. Don't call him hot when you have me around. You'll bruise my ego. Irreparably."

"If I hurt you, I'd be doing everything in my power to get you back," Jack said, squeezing his arms around her waist. "And, for the record, I don't think I am -- I know I am the greatest thing since sliced Raxacoricofallapatorian bread. And that's some damn good bread too."
