It'd been like a fierce standoff between bones and the birds all day. He'd made the mistake of trying to leave once, only to have a gash sliced across his cheek by a methuselah of a bird that screeched and attacked. Ducking back inside and looking out the rather large, plate glass windows the physician saw the collection of birds as they hung out on the gas pumps, the railings, the trees. There were hundreds of them. Big ones, small ones, all black and daunting; and they all stared with their beady eyes at the gas station. It was like they were waiting for something. Like they were stalking.

So, the country doctor pulled up a stool right against the glass and he stared, waiting; watching those birds. It had been hours. And for a while, they stared back. Some of them shifted and fought and cawed; but, mostly they just watched and waited. It was hard to say what prompted the first one to fly at the glass. With a sickening thunk the creature impacted right in front of the doctor. No damage, he breathed a sigh of relief. But then an other came, and another. They were hurling themselves at it with sharp impacts of beaks and of talons and the brittle breaking of hollow bones. Bones looked disgusted. That is until the glass started to break. It might have been thick, but it was brittle. It wouldn't keep them out forever.

"Oh no.. no no no..." He said, pushing up from his stool and looking around. "Jim?!" He called. "Captain?!" Where the hell was the younger man? This was serious! The birds were coming on at full force now and it seemed their numbers were limitless.

"Oh God."
