"Honestly?" He tilted his head, studying her. Did she want the truth, or a bull shit answer that would maybe put her at ease? He wasn't sure anything could do that, though, so he opted for the truth. "No. I'd be lying if I said it was sunshine and roses," he added.
"But there's Kit Kats, anytime I want them. It's a small consolation prize, but I'll take it." He knew he was fixating on the Kit Kats because otherwise he'd have nothing to ground his focus on. His thoughts would be all over the place, and he needed to stay focused.
"Speaking of which, here." He handed her the bright red package. "Try this. I won't be offended if you don't like it," he assured her. He didn't know if that would be a concern, some people wanted to please others whatever the personal cost. If she didn't like it, he didn't want her to force herself to eat it.
