No, I can imagine it was difficult for people who worked so hard for what they had, or didn't have very much, to see and hear about that kind of excess motivated entirely by money.
If you ever encounter the use of "Hallmark holiday" that's just code for invented to make money (in this case, greeting cards and gifts). It's not always true, some of these holidays have connections to history - some just not as relevant as others.
I don't think there should be just one day a year to show people you love them, but I fully admit I'm a sucker for other holidays that bring people together.
