“We found your powers. Can you come over here before my roommates shoot someone?”
The knock on the door of Black Widow House was so heavy-handed it startled Kate more than she’d care to admit. Yelena would have never let her live it down if she’d seen the way she jumped, but thankfully, she was still asleep after her night shift, and she’d taken her bird with her. Hopefully that noise wasn’t loud enough to wake her, too, or whoever was on the other end was going to have to face down her assassin sister. When a moment passed without the creak of a door opening coming from down the hall, Kate popped off the couch and padded across to the front door to pull it open. Her heart picked up for an entirely different reason when she saw the person waiting on the other side – Violet, hair down and a mess, looking both frazzled and exhausted all at once. That lingering vestige of Space Kate that had come with her after their latest portal experience nearly pushed her forward – but she resisted the urge. This was no time, not given the state Violet seemed to be in. “Hi,” she said instead, brows furrowing with concern. “What happened? I mean, come in, but what happened?” She stepped aside to let Violet into the house. Violet was not having a good day. It had started when she'd tried to do her hair, and the magic that usually allows her to style it with such ease decided that it didn't want to work. She had shaken her hands, and didn't have time to be surprised by the beams of light that had shot out of them, destroying the bathroom wall, the force of which sent her flying through the opposite wall and out of Morningside entirely. She probably should have fallen the several stories to her death at that point, except she hadn't, and had instead hovered in the air for an inordinate amount of time before she'd screamed, which was apparently gravity’s cue to drop her. She'd lain on the ground for several long moments, winded but not hurt somehow. And then she'd patted her pockets until she found her phone, pulled it out to text Kate something along the lines of What the bloody fuck is going on? only for the screen to shatter under her thumbs. And so it was that she ended up walking to Kate’s house, hair unbound and covered in drywall dust, clothing dishevelled, and overall not having a good time in any sense of the word. “You tell me!” Violet fumed, stomping into the house. “I don't–” She took a deep breath, and then another, forcing herself to calm down. “I think I blew up my apartment. And possibly flew for a moment? My magic isn't working either. And my phone is broken.” “You blew up – wait, you flew?” That was a lot of information to get in about fifteen seconds, but Kate’s mind was churning through it. She ushered Violet toward the couch, shooing Lucky down so there would be room for the two of them to sit down. No matter the situation, it was clear by the frustration pouring off Violet’s words that she needed to take a minute and try to relax. “When you say you ‘blew up’ the apartment… how?” she questioned. She had a good idea, especially given the talk circulating the network this morning, but she needed a little more confirmation. “I mean I waved my hands like this, and–” there was this light, she had been about to say, but she didn’t need to finish that sentence. The light shot from her hands again. It tore through the television, and through the wall that had been behind where the television had once existed. The television no longer existed. Violet’s hands flew up to her mouth. A piece of drywall fell from where it had been tenuously clinging to the wall and landed with a soft thump into the silence. And then Violet suddenly realized what a terrible idea it was to put her explosive hands right against her very non-explosive-proof face. “Oh bloody hell,” she swore, snatching her hands away from her face and clasping them behind her back. Kate jumped, a hand flying to her chest when the blasts left Violet’s hands and destroyed the TV and a good chunk of the wall behind it. She could hear Lucky scurrying toward the doggy door at the back of the house, nails loud on the hardwood floors, and she couldn’t even blame him. Her heart was racing for a much more situation-related reason now “Oh shit,” she breathed after a few seconds of soaking in the damage. She knew without a doubt that would grab Yelena’s attention – and Leon’s if he was home – for sure. But despite the destruction, it had sort of worked out. Instead of explaining what she meant, Violet had been able to give her an in-person demonstration. She knew exactly what was meant by ‘blew up’ now and just where (or who) those blasts had come from, too. “Okay, well, that’s, uh – those are Carol’s powers,” she said, leaning over to the end table where she’d set her phone earlier and scooping it up. “Which means she’s missing them and probably pretty cranky about it, knowing her, so, let me just–” She held up the phone by way of explanation as one hand expertly scrolled for her friend’s name. The other reached carefully for Violet’s hands at her back, brushing gently across her wrist without fear in an attempt to comfort her. “It’s gonna be fine, okay?” “What the hell was that?!” It was probably not going to be fine. Yelena was pretty quick when it came to going to sleep but she woke up just as fast and easily as well, and it shouldn’t have surprised anyone that the sound of an exploding television and wall would wake her up. She had grabbed a weapon and made her way in the living room, thinking Vallo had been sending out another problem to worry about. But all she saw was her sister and her sister’s friend and a destroyed room. “Lena, no guns!” Kate glared at her sister, not in any true anger but in the hopes that she would put it down. She couldn’t really blame her for being freaked out in this situation, of course, and guns were definitely the first instinct for both of her sisters, she knew that. Still. “Vallo’s being an asshole and switching powers,” she sighed. “Violet got Carol’s, and she hasn’t figured out the control part. I’m calling her now.” She held the phone up for Yelena to see as it started to ring. Leon had been running along the same thought process as Yelena did. He came hurtling down the stairs, two at a time, his gun ready for anything, and forever grateful that Chris had already gone to school for the morning. He hesitated for a moment when he found the living room full of women and no one – except Yelena, who was definitely not attacking the other blonde woman in the room yet – acting like there was any sort of substantial threat. “Oh for fuck’s sake, does everyone in this house have a gun?” Violet asked, managing, mostly successfully, to hide the tremor in her voice. Carol’s voice came over the speaker phone before Kate could even attempt to scold Leon as well. “Bishop, what? I’m bu–” “We found your powers,” Kate practically snapped into the receiver, eyes narrowed on her sister and Leon. “Can you come over here before my roommates shoot someone?” There was a pause there, like Carol couldn’t quite believe what she’d heard. Kate’s hand around Violet’s wrist shifted, lacing their fingers together in an attempt to soothe her, help her feel grounded. It was bad enough to be stuck with cosmic powers unexpectedly, nevermind to be converged on by two gun-wielding blondes. “Give me fifteen minutes.” There was no goodbye, no thank you – just the beep that indicated the call had ended from the other side. Violet didn’t especially want to – she found Kate’s touch comforting in a way that she really didn’t want to examine with any depth – but she pulled her hand away from Kate. “You probably shouldn’t touch me,” she said. “I don’t want to blow off your hand.” She was a little pleased to see the blonde man give a look around the room, and then lower his gun. She would have felt better if he’d… put it away or something, but it was a relief to see him pointing it at the floor instead of at her. “Is everything okay in here, Kate?” he asked. “We’re not being attacked?” Kate didn’t particularly like the feeling that swelled in her chest when Violet pulled her hand back, but she didn’t push. She had zero fear of Carol’s powers, but she could acknowledge right now, things were out of control. She didn’t want any attempt she gave at reassurance to scare Violet more. “No one’s being attacked,” Kate assured Leon, standing up and slipping her hand around her sister’s wrist to pull her hand down. “Carol will help us deal with that. Why don’t you guys… I don’t know, go get a new TV?” Yelena let her lower her hand, but she continued to stare at the wall in disbelief. “I really thought it would be me,” she mumbled under her breath. She turned her attention back to Kate and shook her head. “You know what? I’m just going back to bed. We’ll discuss new TV later.” “There’s absolutely no fucking way you’re destroying any walls in this house, Lena,” Leon said. He frowned, looking between the two of them again. “I think I’ll stay here,” Leon said slowly. Maybe they weren’t under attack, but it didn’t mean they weren’t in danger. “You girls call me if you need help.” And then he turned to follow Yelena on her way back up the stairs. He didn’t like to leave the danger unattended, but then, she wasn’t unattended. Kate was there. And he got the impression they both would rather be alone. Violet let a small, barely noticeable breath out when the two other residents of the house turned to leave the room. “I don’t know that I know Carol,” Violet said, affecting an air of casual interest. Just a couple of friends, gossiping about a dinner guest. “What should I know about her?” Kate sat back down beside Violet as her housemates vanished back to their respective rooms. The TV sat shattered before them, but she’d make sure that got cleaned up later. For now, she had managed to convince the crazy gun-wielders to take a step back, and she had to turn her focus back to her friend. Who should, by all rights, be even more freaked out after everything she’d witnessed in the past five minutes. “You’d know her if you saw her, I think,” Kate offered. “Blonde, my height, glows when she flies? She’s a superhero from my world, Captain Marvel. My sister’s ex, too. Not–” She waved down the hallway where Yelena had disappeared. “–that sister. Natasha. My sister who disappeared when I did.” Sister. Violet remembered talking about a sister with Kate. The other Kate, in space, while they’d been… She shoved the thought forcefully aside. She was not going to think about that other Violet and that other Kate and whatever it was they were doing in space. “She sounds familiar,” Violet said instead. “I think I’ve seen her around. Do you think she’ll be able to help me? Stop me from…” she gestured vaguely at the area where there’d once been a television set and a wall. “Yeah,” Kate assured her with a soft smile. “She’ll help you figure out how to control it until everything goes back to the way it should be.” She wished there was more she could do to help, but she didn’t have enough experience with superpowers to offer any advice. She was just glad Violet came to her when she was scared – that meant something. Too bad she’d friend-zoned them too hard to broach it right now. By the time another knock came at the door several minutes later, Kate had prepared two cups of coffee. One was given to Violet, and the other was meant for her, but she decided to put it to better use. She handed it right over to Carol when she opened the front door, then stepped aside to let her in. “Carol, Violet. Vi, this is Carol.” Carol took in the state of the house’s living room, eyes widening briefly when she saw the pile of destruction that had once been the smart TV mounted on the wall. Then she turned to greet the nervous-looking girl sitting on the couch, taking a seat on the armchair beside her. “Looks like you’ve had a hell of a morning,” she commented, taking a drink from the mug Kate had put in her hands. “Tell me what happened?” Violet took a sip of her hot coffee, and shot Kate a grateful look. Having something to do with her hands was much needed. At this point, though, she’d already told her story, and had some idea of what was going on. Her recounting to Carol was much more coherent, and she added some drama and suspense to her retelling as well. Violet was, after all, an accomplished actress and storyteller, and there was absolutely no bloody way that she was going to be a blubbering, incoherent mess in front of this woman she didn’t know. Carol listened without interrupting from her chair while Kate returned to sit beside Violet, concern painted all over her face. Studying her expressions made it clear that the story Violet was telling her hadn’t been fully revealed before, but it all added up. Her powers were a massive responsibility to keep in check. Someone without the least bit of practice was going to turn into a fireball in five seconds flat, just as Violet had. “Alright, well, until Vallo decides to put everything back the way it was, you’ll have to learn to control everything as best as you can. Why don’t we go out to the backyard and practice?” She set her now-empty coffee cup on the end table beside her and rose to her feet. “Better off destroying some trees than taking out another wall.” “Edwin might disagree with that,” Violet said, managing a bit of a smile. “But I will not. Lead the way.”
