That's one of the questions that comes up a lot with human philosophers who believe in a god or gods that created humanity. You could read some Thomas Aquinas about it? But I think it falls into the "great unknowables" category, myself. We can talk about it and stress about it, but there's no scientific test that's going to tell us whether the choices we make are a result of programming or design or fate or free will. Thinking about whether I have empathy because that's what Alex Yu created me for or because of the experiences I've had and the choices I've made just gives me a headache (or the psychic equivalent depending on what form I'm in).
