Technically mals are any creature that consumes malia, or the energy we use to do magic. They mostly go after teenagers since they have loads of malia and are easier to catch. Where I come from kids have about a 1/7 chance of survival, or 1/4 if you can get into the Scholomance. I'm hoping its better now, but since I got brought here it's hard to be sure. They range from like, tiny agglos you can squish by stepping on, to... really big horrible things I'd rather not go into.
