I'd much rather do basic trigonometry in that situation than run mindlessly toward a light of unknown provenance, but you're certainly more in tune with how people think than I am, so we'll go with your idea.
So we'll need the light to function day and night, be readily visible from a long distance, be visible regardless of atmospheric interference, and use the minimum of resources necessary to achieve that.
